And in the end, all roads pointed to the same possible outcome. His answer wasn't here and he was naïve. It was foolhardy to move as recklessly as Ezekiel did, taking one massive chance on… something that didn’t even exist, on someone who, by nature, was an enemy. It should have angered her, would have angered Rania but the Soul Reaper sounded… and looked so pathetic that any possible frustration was quickly wilted away on sight. He had lost something—someone—important to him, important to all Shinigami as she had learned. But Rania could never understand. Though Arrancar wielded their own Zanpakuto, it did not carry the same weight. It was not the representation of her soul and within it, there was no separate and sentient being waiting to be released. Her Zanpakuto was just… a thing, an object, a sword as anyone would perceive it.
The bearings were simply different.
And so… she didn’t understand. She couldn’t understand and having met the ‘her’ that Ezekiel was speaking of, was aghast at why he would even want ‘her’ back. But that discussion was neither for here nor there because there would always be a divide between their primal beliefs.
Sitting back down at the dining room table, Rania made a few gestures to mark her lack of empathy. She was sympathetic but there was not an affinity for communion. And in the stale air, her words seem to hang longer than they should have.
“So what you’re telling me is that… that woman I saw last time, the one who literally would have etched her blood into your own skin, you actually want her back?” A raucous laughter to break up the heavy ambiance. But quickly shaking her head, the Arrancar motioned for an offense she didn’t mean to make. “No, no, I shouldn’t be laughing. You are, after all, a Shinigami and a Zanpakuto spirit is just something I’ll probably never understand but...”
With a light sigh, Rania leaned back in her chair, giving Ezekiel a thoughtful smile. “You know… I hate to say this, but maybe this problem is something you should have figured out with your Shinigami friends, no? Wouldn’t they have understood your predicament the best? She was in there somewhere and now she’s gone. It doesn’t sound like she’ll ever come back on mutual or friendly terms either. And again, I can’t help you… but if you’re willing to best your last slivers of hope on me, I may know someone who can. But also like I said, that’s a fall you’ll have to take by yourself. This is as far as I will hold your hand.”
So… would he take the offer? If it meant just one shot, if it meant his life in the end. Would he take that chance?
What Rania needed from Ezekiel had already been accomplished and it could be similarly said that passing him off to that dreadful woman was all she could do for him in return.
After all, she would be coming back soon and Ezekiel wasn’t ready but…
