Something like half an hour had passed since Mitsutaka had last seen Maxwell, and he had been busy. He had thoroughly explored the whole of this odd interconnecting room system, and believed he had a pretty complete idea of what each room's purpose was. As he moved from room to room, his book filled with descriptions of each room and a map gradually began to form. He discovered rooms that altered Kido in multitudinous ways- one room, for instance, cast counterspells to the user's Kido attacks, while another acted like a prism, breaking spells apart into more basic components... Fascinating, Mitsutaka thought to himself. I doubt the Kido corps has a better training area!
Some rooms were more environmental; one Mitsutaka came across was merely a gigantic, rectangular hole with edging. Another had practice dummies, dressed to look like Hollows or Arrancar. Upon closer examination, Mitsutaka found they slowly regenerated from their injuries. The farthest room from the origin held something of great interest to him: three bookcases filled with written studies on Kido, power, and Reiatsu. Had he more time, the researcher would have loved nothing better than to linger there and read. As it was, he had time enough to pocket a few Kido training manuals and hypotheses. Mitsutaka traveled around six outer rooms until he found himself back where he'd begun. Holding his breath, he pushed inward to the last room. They had no idea what they would find, but both Shinigami and Zanpakutou eagerly awaited the discovery. The stone took entirely too long to soften, and Mitsutaka tripped as he tried to push through. Righting himself, he looked up.
It was huge. The room was easily the size of the 4th division compound building. Mitsutaka looked around in awe. "This is all underground the Seiretei? Unbelievable!" His voice echoed in the empty room. It was made of imitation stone like all the others, blankly whitewashed, cold. It was easily two stories tall. There were benches on the sides and nothing at all in the middle of the room.
...No, that wasn't quite true. Mitsutaka could barely make out a vague visual distortion, about a three meter radius sphere. He moved forward to touch it, but was stopped by Kowareta's warning. Wait a second, partner... this doesn't feel right. Test it first. Mitsutaka agreed. It looked almost like a rift more than a sphere... he took a page from his book, crumpled it and threw it into the distortion. It slowed to a standstill in the middle, just as his Kido bolt had in the second room. But it didn't regain its speed. He watched it for a minute or more, and it didn't budge. A shiver ran up his spine. A stasis field? Mitsutaka's thought was tinged with disbelief. Is such a thing possible? Evidently so, his Zanpakutou replied. You know what that means, right? I think so. This could be used for surgery of the most complicated type, or for imprisonment, or for study... I see why this is hidden inside the 4th Division building. I can't imagine all of the things that have happened here are moral. And the torture, Kowareta exclaimed. Imagine if you could key it so the man stuck so could feel things! It would be the ultimate torture! He laughed long and shrill. Mitsutaka just sighed. "I know where your thoughts are likely to go, don't I?" He left the room, not wanting to risk getting caught in such a dangerous field. He left the paper hanging in midair.
Mitsutaka climbed back through the initial wall, returning to the mirror-room. As he entered, he saw Maxwell staring oddly at the mirror. "Xavier-kun, what's wrong?" As he waited for the recruit's answer, Mitsutaka walked to the opposite wall and hung up the map. It would help future explorers, and he to navigate the maze. For he would come back without a doubt, if just to get back at that library.
