Now we've gone and done it, haven't we?
Among the ranks of the Broken Transcendents has joined Severance. Most of you know her as Amaya, though she's been going mostly by Aya as of late. Quite the mess that little decision got her into!
Now, let me tell you a little something about our beloved Severance. When she first joined? I thought she'd barely be able to squeak into Resurrección. Second Release was about all I thought she'd manage to accomplish. Part of me expected her to burn out not too long after that. It takes quite a bit of work to get any further, after all. I didn't know if she'd have the desire to pull it off.
Now here I am, sixteen months later, writing about her Transcendence.
I have never, ever eaten my words as hard I was forced to today.
To think, this all started from some girl who didn't even think she could count her GP properly. Funnily enough, she's better at it than I am! Even more than that, Amaya started all of this having written herself into a corner. Here she has a character that wants nothing more than to have nothing to do with anyone else, ever. You could say she wrote herself into a corner there.
Then she broke herself out by getting close to the most powerful thing that Bleach Gotei has ever seen. That's after a failed romance she tried to start years before! That, right there, is really what started it all. Although the character really had no interest in anyone else she was suddenly the name on everyone's lips, the homewrecker.
After that everything started to plummet downhill. Everyone got involved in her life, everyone wanted to be part of anything Amaya was doing, and slowly but surely the woman started to get involved in things she couldn't get out of. She even hitched a ride along for the Massacre so long ago, all to save a friend!
On that day she saw part of the man who "loved" her that she didn't really want to see. Amaya hated Arrancar and Hollows for the hell they had put her through for years and years now. To see him acting like that when she had always thought he was better, when he told her she was better? It hurt, she couldn't stand it, and when she confronted him about it he tossed her aside for not sticking up for herself.
It didn't take much more prodding for her to snap and assault him, to do something of her own volition for the very first time and in turn change her very destiny: She acheived Resurrección, Second Release. That's where I expected her story to effectively stop.
Instead it sprouted rockets and took right off. She only got more and more popular and Amaya's psyche only cracked further and further. The voice she had developed in her mind got louder, more pronounced. And the whole time she'd been running around with her little monster cat.
Apparently that monster cat was a bit more than an animal Hollow. In fact, he had been the reason Amaya grew as quickly as she did, manipulating her life and helping her grow into something much, much more powerful than what he had found. He had even gone so far as to disguise his appearance from her, being far larger and more powerful than anything she had expected.
Needless to say, this didn’t end well for Amaya’s pet. She not only killed him but also completely, truly fractured her psyche and created the much more dominant Aya Lunitta.
After that, things started to go downhill. We saw an unprecedented and aggressive side to this woman that we would never have expected before. I know I certainly didn’t. Gone was the Amaya that I didn’t think would make it a step past Second Release, she was already a Prestige Arrancar!
Aya only kept ramping things up. Experiments, relationships, a desperate struggle to replace the hole in her heart left by a Tova that had grown bored of her. He was a god with better things, and people, to do. She couldn’t keep his attention so she tried to fill his spot, what he meant to her, with other people. Literally and otherwise.
But at this point, Tova had long become something more to her than a love interest. He represented the affection she was starved for, the affection she didn’t let herself have because she kept cutting others away.
People came and went. Tori, Takua, Erasmus, Miki, you name it. Amaya burned through one potentially close, healthy relationship right after the other. Each one fell apart, warped into something malicious, and in turn warped her. No other character was on such a fast track to disaster.
Then disaster struck. Alter Tova died and with him went the stabilizing force in both Las Noches and her life. Suddenly, everything was all too much. Takua was too much, Erasmus was too much, Aya was too much, and the world was too much.
In one of the best scenes I’ve seen played out on Bleach Gotei, in Eternally Mine our dear Amaya is faced with a choice on what to do. To bring herself together, to move forward and accept her mistakes and the folly of letting others live so much of her life for her. Instead, she blames them for doing a poor job of it, snaps entirely, and becomes an entirely new person.
She transforms.
She transcends and warps into something truly monstrous.
She sits upon the throne and wordlessly declares herself Queen.
All of this from one lonely little girl who didn’t love herself enough.
Everyone, give your newest Broken Transcendent a round of applause!
Congratulations, Amaya “Severeance” Kidachi. You’ve made history!
