Name: Naoko Yukimura (Honest, Snowy Village)
Age: 600 years old.
Born in 1386, and died in 1414 at the age of 28. Spent the last 585 years in Rukongai. Appears to look 40.
Gender: Male
Loyalties: Naoko is loyal to Seireitei, though not as if his life depends on it. Most of his loyalties are connected to the orphans he helped in Rukongai, and the families he helped protect. To him, the protection of Rukongai comes before the protection of Seireitei.
Character Parameters
Height & Weight: 6 foot 2 weighing about 178lbs
Hair & Eye Colour: Naoko has an unusual hair colour, that seems to reference the concoction that created the Ainu people of Hokkaido. His hair is short and red-brown, soft to the touch and has a parting on the right side. He never likes it too long, incase it were to get snagged on a branch or even knotted itself up. He tends to comb it backwards, giving the impression that a soft breeze is always passing by. His eyes are similar to his hair, though are darker. People often mistake them for being a basic brown colour, but when the light hits them right can you notice the reddish hue present. Surrounding his pupil on both eyes is a slight heterochroma. It looks like a tiny halo encircling both eyes and is a Buff Brown. The light hitting them however does give the appearance of gold.
Noticeable Differences:
Naoko isn't as visually impressive as most of his shinigami counterparts. With the majority of them all looking under the age of 25, he tends to stand out like a sore thumb. Not that it bothers him in the slightest. Standing at 6 foot 2, Naoko is incredibly tall for someone from Japan, freakishly so. it was seen as a blessing when he was alive, and as such his father trained into him the ways of the warrior and the hunter, so that he could use his body to it's full extent.
Starting with his face we can clearly see that Naoko is an old man, long gone are the days where his skin was smooth and now, it shows signs of wrinkles and constant bags under his eyes. He doesn't look extremely old for 40, but you can tell that he has put a lot of work into his life, past and present. His face is square and robust, a strong jaw line ending with s short chin help give him a feeling of solidarity. His nose is short but not chubby, instead it's sculpted smooth with a rounded end. From the front it does look a tiny bit flat, but fits well between his large but slim lips and small hawk like eyes. His cheeks don't protrude much from his face but this hides how stretchy they are! Years of children saying his face looked too serious seems to have given them an elastic composition. He tends to keep himself clean shaven, but on occasion will allow himself to grow a beard. This is in fact against his Ainu customs, for when a man reaches a certain age, they are never to shave again. However with his work with children, Naoko found it a bit too painful keeping a beard. So to make up for it, he will grow it a month before and after his birthday in order to help appease his internal traditional conflict.
Compared to most other shinigami Naoko's body isn't some sort of god like temple. Granted its strong, but its not toned to the highest of heavens. Naoko's definition is pretty much lacking, save for his arms, shoulders and chest. His shoulders are shapely which flow quite smoothly into his bulky arms. His hands are quite large with his palms being huge and wrinkle worn, ending with thick stubby fingers. His palms are actually quite rough, with calluses formed at the base of his fingers. Even as a shinigami he still farms, and works during the day to keep his strength and stamina up. Naoko's body looks like that of a father, still trying to cling to his youthful shape, but letting parts of him sag. As said before his chest is still defined, which fits nicely with his broad shoulders. However his belly is another matter. Whilst beneath his slowly growing dome there lies a brick wall, he has started to eat a bit more than normal. As such his Shihakusho is just starting to show signs of his stomach stretching forth.
There isn't much to say about his lower body. It's in proportion with the rest of him, strong legs and defined calves are present. His Shihakusho is the standard one that is presented to new shinigami, and it sits with him well. The only item of customization he has is a single earring. Whilst most men tend to scoff at him, or try to scold him for wearing women's jewellery, the men and women of the Ainu people both shared their love in earrings. His is a very simple design, a small pearl bead encompassing a bears tooth.
When he is not on duty, Naoko will wear a simple brown kimono. He never was one to be won over with fancy clothes, he likes to keep his life simple, as he had always wished. The kimono is a beaver brown with flower patterns that are all uniform and a darker shade of the colour. He holds it together with a simple black cloth around his waist. The material is warm and soft to the touch, made out of the inner bark of an elm tree, known as Attusi. He has other kimonos of varying colours and styles but this one is his favourite. Even though Naoko won't spend a lot of his money on fancy new clothes he can't help but admire some of the mortal worlds trends, and as such has a particular look when he is in his gigai.
Over time he has come to notice how people treat each other in the mortal world, and that in this present time, looking smart always seems to have a certain effect on people. He once on a mission to learn how to blend in with the living took at trip to the cinema in 1947 to see Out of the Past, a film noir. He loved the trench coats and the suits, and because of that one film, its all his Gigai ever wears. His trench coat, ends in-between his knees and calves, and his quite old. It's original colour has since faded into a greyish Tan. His suit is a simple one, black stripe with a white shirt and a black tie.
Extraversion Sensing Feeling Judging
When Naoko was alive, all he wanted was to live in peace. For a time he had that, and when there was no peace, he strove to establish it. As such Naoko has always been a man that lives with his 'heart on his sleeve'. He doesn't fear showing other people his emotions, because nothing gets done by people who lock themselves up. They only spread hurt and confusion, something Naoko strives to prevent. As such he has a strong sense of loyalty with the people he works with. He doesn't dish it out, but rather believes in actions are what make the words true. If you can show him that you are strong then he will put his faith in you when he needs you to be strong. Despite this making him out to sound strict, Naoko is a very warmhearted man, and just believes in getting the job done.
'A job not done right is a job not done at all'
Friends of Naoko's state that as his 'catch-phrase'. He says it often when he finds people slacking, but won't just stand there and berate them. He will take the time to notice why the party is being lazy, and then do what he can to give them the energy to do it right. Naoko is very observant of his surroundings, he takes note of peoples day-by-day lives in order to try and help them. He will provide what he can, not for some want to be recognised as some sort of pope, but rather its something that should naturally be done. In his village, people helped each other, no matter how small. One person's mole hill could be another persons mountain, and it was your responsibility to help them in whatever way you could. This is another of his mantra's that he lives by. If everyone decided that one person's problems were pathetic, how does that help said person? Aren't they still in need of help? Unable to see what the others see, so are doomed to be afraid of something the shouldn't? That is not how life should be.
Naoko is a fun loving man, he likes to drink with his friends, as he sees it a way for all of them to wind down after a long days work. Drunk or merely tipsy the man finds that is when he can feel his comradeship at its peak. Everyone around is full of laughter and tend to open up more. Whilst one shouldn't abuse drinking, he does find it to be one of his favorite hobbies, due to him being able to observe people without their daily facade.
Positive Traits
- Practical: Being a farmer and a hunter for the Ainu people when he was alive, Naoko learned the only way to deal with things is to do it yourself. Whether the problem be emotional, complex or out of this world, you can always go at it with a calm mind and a strong pair of hands. So he always takes the most practical route to find his answers, even if it means he doesn't the answers he wanted. Because something is better than nothing, and you can always go back to the drawing board if one plan fails.
- Loyal: Due to Naoko's warm heart, he has a strong sense of loyalty to those he calls his friends. Betraying someone has crossed his mind from time to time, but he always resists. He resists not because he has some ambiguous sense of honour; but because its not practical. You spend so much time putting your trust in someone, creating bonds and memories, then to just throw it all way? That is not how someone should live. Life is best lived with the bonds that tie people together. Where will fame or fortune aid you when your on your deathbed? It will not. But the smiles and warmth from those whom you have deemed worthy of your love will.
- Conscientious: "A job not done right is a job not done at all". Naoko's famous words of wisdom. Despite his caring and calm nature, his work ethic can get on peoples nerves. Not in the bad way mind you, since he all he wants is for the job to get done. Taking care in your work is good for the mind, it helps you focus and in doing so allows your to notice things others wouldn't. It's also the best way in showing how much you care for a person, if you painstakingly fix a problem piece by piece it shows your respect for them.
- Sociable: As said before Naoko loves to have a drink with friends. He hates missing out on any news that has happened recently. Not in a nosey sort of way, but just a guy who wants to always be in on the jokes. Is great attitude to life and people draw them to him. He is the kind of guy that everyone knows and will always want to know how he is getting on. People do it because he does it for them, and more. You could say that it's helping out the orphans when he was still in Rukongai that had this impact on him, since they were so young he had to try and keep up with all their gossip.
- Imaginative: Regardless if the children turned old Naoko into a gossip, there is one thing that they helped grow within him. His Imagination. With children ranging from babies to young teenagers, he had to think up games and ways to entertain them when they got bored. It's reached a stage where it will leak into normal conversation, where his metaphors or similes are become quite bizarre and outside of the box. Things like "You can't catch a badgermole without first learning not to dig" is an example of how weird he can be sometimes. For the sake of translation, Naoko is basically saying, there are some things in life you don't need to chase.
- Resourceful: Years spent hunting in the wilds, years spent fending for himself in Rukongai have made Naoko wise. Never does he waste what is given to him whether its; bits of junk, paper, even rotting food Naoko will find a use for it. It has managed to get him out os some sticky situations in the past.
- Stoic: Keeping your cool during tense moments is what separates the living from the dead. A lesson learned the hard way for Naoko, but one he has kept to true ever since. Letting yourself getting flummoxed will only cause harm to those around you. Even if Naoko's core is screaming fear he will not show a sign of it. He does this for those he fights with, for those that look to him for protection. A true man stands like the mountain in the face of the hurricanes wind.
Negative Traits
- Stubborn: If there is one thing about Naoko, is that he is stubborn. You would have to be, to be as hard working as he is. It's not just the hard work though, it links into his practicality and how he address problems laid before him. When a decision is made he will stick with it, and rarely ever budge. Naturally he is open to new ideas, but whether he will actually incorporate them is another thing entirely. Naoko's confidence in himself is admirable, but he does rely on it a bit too much when squeezed into a corner. With the ancient warrior mindset to go out with a bang buried within him, he tends to use it as a bluff if he needs to. Whilst he is able to keep his fear under check in a fight, his confidence does get the better of him. Some have rationalised it to the fact that he used to tower over all other men in the past, thus he naturally developed arrogance in his skills. Whether that is the reason or not he struggles to be modest. This confidence in himself is probably what makes him so stubborn to change his ideas.
- Fatalist: This is possibly one of his worst traits, and is connected to his stubbornness. It's not to say that Naoko despairs when faced with something unpleasant. Far from it. Naoko believes in the choices he makes, so if one was to lead him towards his death he will face it head on. One would think this was reckless behaviour, a lack of thought for his own well being and survival. It's not, well as he puts it, its not. Naoko's resignation to his fate is what helps him see things clearly in a situation, even if it requires his stubbornness to reach extreme levels.
- Mischievous: This one really only happens after he has been surrounded by kids. Even though his usual serious tone comes back, there is always still a bit of his inner child left over for a tiny bit of fun. It leads him to some of the most awkward situations imaginable. Imagine, a 40 year old man pulling a prank on a colleague that you would expect from a troubled teen. He usually tries to contain it, but it never works. His pranks range from getting someone flustered to even some graffiti now and then. Mind you the graffiti isn't over walls but hidden in work documents.
- Envious: Naoko is a man who never had much in his life so you could argue that this is a natural trait of his. However this trait wasn't really present during his human life, it only really formed during his time in Rukongai. On a daily basis he was surrounded by poverty worse than any he had ever experienced. Yet just a stones throw away were the rich complexes of the noble families and the home of the Gotei. Seeing such a divide between the rich and poor, coupled with his own daily struggles and the ones he did for others built up an envy complex within him. He can usually keep it under wraps, but when he is feeling mischievous he lets his envy get the better of him when choosing targets to mess with.
- Caring: Now whilst caring is a positive trait, it is also a negative one for Naoko. The simple fact is that he is a man who cares to much for the people he looks out for. It's what has put him at odds with his role as a shinigami. His duty is to protect Seireitei, but in doing so means the people he cares for in Rukongai suffer. This is something he cannot accept, the bonds he once made are far stronger than any military state. It's a weakness people have used against him, but its also the source of his energy to help others.
- Simple: This isn't to say that Naoko is stupid, but rather a bit innocent in his way of thinking and acting. He doesn't stand out from the crowd and doesn't ever aim to be in the lime light. Because of this simple way of thinking, he usually takes a lot of what people say at face value. It means that Naoko can be a bit gullible at times and tends to get frustrated when he realises that the person wasn't being serious.

Likes:
- Storms: Naoko take a lot of pleasure from watching a storm roll over him. No matter the time of day he will stop to observe the clashing of the elements. He finds himself in awe of the howling wind, the lashing of lightning and the thunderous roars that echo within him. The world is born anew after a storm and destruction has taken its toll. People work together for a brief moment to adapt to the problems they cause. A roof tile broken here, a room flooded there, children too afraid it might start again to be taken care of. Storms are good for putting his mind at rest, and for quelling any tension that may have arisen prior.
- Cycling: A bicycle was such a wondrous invention when he first happened upon it. Naturally they weren't invented when he was alive, otherwise Naoko could have ended up being a world champion at it. He enjoys the freedom it gives you, even if he can technically run through the air. To combat this, Naoko has developed a technique so that he can actually ride his bicycle through the air, thus enjoying even more freedom at a leisurely pace. He is often seen cycling around Rukongai on his evening patrols.
- Farming: Farming helps the population feed themselves, it also helps keep a person strong. Near his old haunts in Rukongai Naoko set up a small field and taught those near him how to farm. It's small and doesn't feed many, but it helps people to let go of their troubles. Naoko often goes back and helps if he has a lot on his mind just so he can feel a measure of peace before making a tough decision.
- Onigiri: Naoko eats an absurd amount of rice, he practically has it for every meal. Not loose rice mind you. He loves it stogy and stick, so that he can make all kinds of onigiri. He is considered a master in his cooking them and creating fantastic and inventive flavors. Naoko tends to just cook them for himself, but if he has leftovers, he will usually share them out.
- Alcohol: As said before, Naoko loves a good drink with friends. It's not just the social aspect of booze that he loves, but the booze itself. Whether its a strong lager or a bitter ale, the taste has always satisfied him. It's easy to tell if he is drunk due to his whole face turning a deep shade of red.
- Film Noirs: When Naoko travelled to that cinema all those years ago, it forever changed him. Watching Humphrey Bogart tackle the darkest of plots, or being seduced by Lauren Bacall as she tricks you about her innocence. The class and style of the 40's has had such an influence on Naoko that when in his gigai he always tries to act like his black and white heros. It's never convincing mind you.
Dislikes
- Fog: Fog is something that disturbs Naoko. Partially because it has always hung on days of great disaster for him but also because of how little you can see. It hangs in the air as if its trying to choke you and kills all sound. Nothing normally shakes up this old man but fog always does the trick. It makes him more skittish and tense.
- Cauliflower: Having tried it once in the mortal realm some years ago, Naoko has found the only food he detests with all his being. It tastes worse than the smell of rotten eggs, even though its texture is the same as broccoli it feels different. Its pure white form gives it a deathly look. He has tried mixing it with sauces and foods, even mountains of rice haven't done the trick. If you ever want to see Naoko act like a spoilt child; feed him cauliflower.
- Fortune telling: Due to Naoko's gullibleness he tends to fall for fortunes quick easily. Even if he states that he doesn't believe in what he's been told Naoko will secretly suffer due to him accepting the fate befallen him. Granted every now and then he will try to swing out of it but his luck always seems to sway in favor of the fortune teller.
- Reading: Naoko understands that reading is important and he will do it sometimes. But most of the time he won't he prefers to sneak down to the mortal world and watch their films. Why read a book when you have a story being told to you visually? He could never read prior to joining the academy and seeing how all they had were textbooks meant that Naoko never really got a good first impression of literature.
- Cheaters: When you spend a lot of your time helping kids, you always play games with them. Every now and then you have a cheater and have to deal with the follow storm of arguing about it. This has meant that Naoko has a pretty short temper with cheaters, regardless if it's kids or adults he is playing a game with.
- Brats: Spoilt brats to be precise or to be even more precise rich children. Most tend to lord it over the other kids, and even have the audacity to treat their elders with little to no respect. He knows its not their fault and that it's the parents who have raised them wrong, but he can't help but feel animosity towards these undisciplined children.
The Greatest Flaw
Naoko's greatest flaw is linked to his time in Rukongai. He was an alcoholic who did depraved acts to get his drink. Now yes he can drink and be fine but there is still and internal hunger that lies within him. A dark desire to go back to the shadow of a man he was and covet only the booze that would remove his senses. Everytime he drinks he has to control himself for if he doesn't then he may end up not coming back like he did before. This also effects his relationship with his zanpakuto spirits. A cruel twist of fate dangles the hunger before him whenever he visits them via Jinzen or uses them in battle.
Bond Undeniable
Zanpakuto Spirit: Naoko is the proud wielder of the uncommon dual zanpakuto type. As such when he is communicating with his spirit, it has split itself into 2 beings rather than stay as one. Despite being able to communicate with them and perceive them as children Naoko still doesn't know their actual name. So for now they have opted to be called Ame and Yuki respectively.
Yuki Ame
Personalities:
Yuki is the happy-go-lucky type of spirit. She enjoys fooling around and get excited pretty quickly. This actually ebbs out of her into her blade when Naoko has released the pair. One of her traits has been a being quick to forgive, because life is far too short for carrying around grudges. Its not to say that she doesn't get angry or annoyed at her 'little brother' or 'dad' but she will usually feign unhappiness to make them feel bad and then get over it. What always throws Naoko off about the pair is how adult they can suddenly become. Since they are just extensions of his own soul, they have just as much wisdom as he. Yuki tends to show case it when she teases. Dropping in a quick quip about Naoko's love life or most recent drunken escapade is one of her favorite past times. She does it just to make the big lug squirm. Her mischievousness grows with her excitement. With her excitement grows a side of her she prefers to keep hidden. A darkness, similar to Ame lurks within her and as she looses herself in the emotions that control her, her cruelty begins to shine. She has never been cruel to Naoko or Ame but when talking about others the words do worry Naoko.
Ame on the other hand is quite reserved. Whilst he does have a wild side to him he tends to keep to himself and is always whining about how Yuki handles things. He gives off this pathetic demeanor but in actuality is the stronger of the two. He embodies Naoko's fatalist attitude towards things and has a bad habit of doubting every fight his master gets into. However as said before he is strong and when his master really needs it he will let himself go as wild as Yuki and let it pour out of his soul and into the blades abilities. Ame is still childlike and since he has an 'older sister' tends to follow her around and naturally agree with her on any matters of importance. Unlike Yuki who tends to bite back her tongue and fear the shadow bears that populate their world Ame lives up to both. He won't feel bad if he says something harsh about another, or if he is mean to Yuki and Naoko.
Appearances:
The pair of spirits are just little children. Yuki stands at about 4 foot 1 and Ame stands at about 3 foot 5. This isn't their 'true form' which is something Naoko won't be able to perceive until he truly connects with his zanpakuto. For now they are content in their current forms but they dislike it when Naoko doesn't try to listen to them. The pair wear thick coats made of fur similar to the ones the Ainu used to wear. Yuki's is a faded blood red with the fur being unbelievably soft to the touch. It also has a small tail that hangs down to the snow with a white tip. There is no pattern to it save the fading being stronger in some places than others.
Ame's coat on the other hand is a deep and strong oak brown with the fur being sleek and shiny. His coat doesn't have a tail but instead has a hood which he usually has on at all times. The rim of the hood is covered in a white fur with specks of red strands that Ame always pulls out. He says it makes him too similar to his 'sister' when the colour has never dominated the fringe.
Some Likes & Dislikes:
- Yuki loves it when their is a fresh snow and proceeds to roll about in it without pause.
- Ame can't help but ask questions about Naoko's actions all the time. He likes to know more about his surroundings even if it gets on their 'father's' nerves.
- Yuki hates it when it turns to night in their inner world. Shadows creep from the fires and scare her every now and then. They always look the same; one eyed and with a smile.
- Ame hates it when Yuki shows off. He makes it a bad habit of pushing or tripping her up to fluster her.
Inner World:
Naoko's inner world looks like something out of a children's story book. The world doesn't look 'real' rather everything looks like it came out of the Starry Night painting from Van Gogh. Or to be more precise aspects of the world appear in this art style whilst the rest is a vast blanket of snow. It looks all quite dull when Naoko first arrived there. A single small flame sits in the center, its colours extremely vibrant and its shape twists in ways not normally possible. The logs that sit underneath it always look immaculate with only a slight bit of the burning showing upon the top. It's hard to tell the difference between the snow and the sky since it is all a vast sheet of white. The spirits help break it up a bit as well as the small rocks that dot the landscape. They don't seem to serve any function other than as a place for the children to hide behind. The light snow always covers them, but whenever Naoko dusts the snow off he tends to find strange markings which vanish and reappear each time a new 'fall' has happened.
There is no temperature despite the cold breath emanating from their mouths. Yet they all loved to pretend that it is cold, so they can have an excuse to cuddle and stare at the fire. There is a slight day/night cycle in the world. It follows the same one that dominates our world and the variation is slight. When night falls the flame's orange glow spreads out in a 20 meter circumference. It is pitch black past that barrier but no matter how far you walk from it you can always see the flame. Past the barrier small prin pricks of stars dot the sky. They shake and shimmer and swirl in the same fashion as the Van Gogh painting.
Sealed Zanpakuto:
In it's sealed form Naoko's zanpakuto looks like your regular katana, however it comes in a daisho. Daisho which translates to 'big- little' means that Naoko has a normal Katana and a Wakizashi as his sealed zanpakuto. He wears the blades like most shinigami or samurai would, tied on to his hip with the katana above the other. The sword's sheath is a dark blue and it has a glossy look to them. They are simple with no etched designs sprawling over the material. The guards are a brilliant white colour. Pure and delicate they seem to look like large flat discs. Engraved upon them in dark blue are snow-flake patterns. The hilt is the same as any other weapon, its colour matching the sheath and the wrapping tightly bound upon both blades.
Shikai Appearance:
Currently Naoko has no clue as to what his shikai is. Despite the spirits insistence for him to actually try and learn their name the shinigami seems quite content with the current set of arrangements. He does wonder about how their world and the spirits abilities tie together. The one eyed shadows seem to be his strongest clue.
Shikai Abilities:
No shikai means no abilities. However Naoko does seem to have an extraordinary talent at sensing and perceiving other shinigami's zanpakuto. Whether or not this links to his shikai is yet to reveal itself however Ame and Yuki do tend to get excited whenever this happens.
FLASHBACK
Human Life & Death: (1386 - 1414)
Naoko was born in northern Ezo or Ezoichi as the Japanese called it. It is now known as modern day Hokkaido, Soya subprefecture. During this time the Japanese had a firm hold on the south of the island despite the constant skirmishes by the Ainu people that populated the island. For a long time he never knew of the horror of war, and stayed in his northern homeland for some time till his later years.
Born in the middle of winter, the child's cries echoed through the cold. His name was given to him partially as a joke. Babies cry when they are born but they cry harder when they are cold, so the joke was that the child was an honest one in the face of winter. Their settlement was small, only having a population of around 200. They lived a lot of their lives in isolation, due to their village being nestled deep within the mountains. Their main source of food was hunting and fishing using their meat to trade with the villages lower down the mountain for rice and vegetables.
He never felt the effect of the war until his 13th winter. Due to harsh snowstorms buffeting their area, the hunters had been unsuccessful in finding any food. With the fear that the village would starve, the chieftain sent a party down the mountain in hopes of trading for food. Naoko was chosen alongside his father and some friends to make haste in the midst of a terrible storm. It normally took only 3 days to travel down the mountain. With the storms never ceasing and the old highways lost in snow drifts, the hunting party ended up taking twice as long, for they kept getting lost.
When they finally emerged into the village, they too saw the devastation the storms had befallen them. Huts destroyed, people packed together with barely any room to move. They made their way straight to the chieftains hut, and begged to trade so that they might live. Inside that very hut, in the grey twilight light of dawn did he first encounter the war that would take his life. A soldier from the south sat with the Chieftain arguing that they needed more men to be sent south in order to push the invading Japanese out. The chieftain angry at such a proposal whilst his own people suffered, sent the man away and spent the rest of the day bartering with the elder members of the group. Naoko approached the soldier, not to join but out of curiosity. He had never seen a man from the south and wanted to get a closer look before he vanish into the storm.
The man looked down on Naoko and smiled, telling him that he was too young to join up but if he worked hard and became strong the army could use a brave child like him. He left after that, with his stragglers in tow. They never saw the soldier again he and his father believed they perished in the storm.
This continued till his 18th winter. Naoko had become a fine and strong man, respected in the village and a fantastic hunter of the Usuri Brown bear. Regularly he would take part in the Kumamatsuri, whether it be hunting the cubs or feeding them. He assumed that the war had been won without him, and that the land of Ezo had returned to its peaceful state. The winter that year was a cold one, barely any storms but the air was sharp and cut right through to the bone. He awoke one morning to the sound of shouting, his father and the village chieftain. Quickly he felt him being lifted from the ground his father shouting in his face to hide all their valuables and food. Men rode in on horses of the darkest black, they bodies adorned with ainu battle armour blessed by the gods. They kept shouting, proclaiming that the war had gotten worse, and that the Ainu way of life, even here in the mountains was threatened. They demanded that the eldest sons of all the men were to come join the war effort.
After much deliberation the chieftain decided to do as they say and commanded that all the eldest sons were to meet up with the soldiers at the base of the mountain in 3 days. Finally he would be able become a warrior to make his family proud. Despite his energy, all he saw was sorrow in the faces of those he loved. His family said goodbye as if this was the last time they were going to see him.
It took them a month to reach the southern part of the island, and Naoko was completely blown away by it all. Here the land was flat and simple with its highest peaks being far off on the horizon. The seasons came and went, their group was placed in a large training camp with other men from all over the island, and were trained in the art of gorilla warfare. Naoko also was taught the ways of the smith as they required weapons to be forged. It took time but soon he got a real knack for it and apprenticed to the head smith in the nearby village. During his time at the village a girl beautiful and smart entered his world and he practically fell in love at first sight. He tried multiple times to woo her, but she never accepted.
This to and fro of teasing came to an abrupt end when Naoko's men were called to the front lines. On his last day he attempted one last time to woo his love and she refused. Tears brimming her eyes as she told him to ask her again when he came back. With the same gut feeling he got before when he left his family he left her standing in the village as he made his way to war. The entire army marched and prayed with each footstep that they would be brought back safely.
Naoko spent 3 years on the front lines. Watching his friends die at the hands of the Japanese samurai. It took his toll on him, the constant marching, fighting and death. Eventually the Ainu were pushed back, and the gorrilla army collapsed and scattered. Naoko used the chance to head back to his love and then to take her to his mountain home, away from the fighting and the death. She nursed him to health, a mixture of joy and worry always stained her face. His arrival was a good one, but it didn't bode well for the war effort. He brushed it all aside and focused on getting better so that he could take her away to his home. Their years apart changed nothing between them save for the fact that when asked for her hand she instantly said yes.
Married but without children. He and his wife tried over and over, but to no avail could they conceive. Naoko took it as a curse for abandoning the war, but his love told him it didn't matter. They were surrounded by children and all of them looked up to their great big uncle. He would spend his free time playing with them any games they concocted. As the summer of his 26th year came, the decision had finally been made to move back to the mountains. It was time for her to meet his family and for them to escape the constant and worrying rumours of the Japanese's advance through the countryside.
They never reached Naoko's snow capped mountains. As they headed north the pair met there demise at the hands of a Japanese scout group. A cold fog had come down from the north, bringing a stillness to the land. The pair ended up getting lost and separated as they tried to press on. Naoko spent what felt like years, searching through the fog, trying to find his wife calling out her name. He tripped, stumbled and fell over the roots of trees. All was silent until he heard it, a scream echoing and cutting through the fog straight to him. Dropping everything he ran towards that horrible sound. As he chased it, he climbed a hill that rose out of the fog. There he found her surrounded by Japanese scouts who were laughing in their native tongue. She was being held down to the ground and forced upon for their enjoyment. An anger rose within Naoko, and he charged at them, despite only having a rusty sword and no armour. Catching them by surprise he managed to slay several of them before they managed a counter attack. Quickly and swiftly they killed him, their blades constantly stabbing him in the gut whilst they shouted their curses and profanities. His wife tried to stop them but was slain too. Metres from where he stood.
Naoko fell to the ground, his face in the mud being crushed by their armoured feet. He suffocated and bled to death.
Rukongai: (1414 - 1999)
To awake in a world vastly different from the one you were just in is a shock to anybody. As soon as he felt the last embers of life escape is beaten and bloody body everything went black. When Naoko came to, he was at the bottom of the hill he died upon. Slowly he got up, to find his body beneath him and he realised he was dead. He ran up the hill hoping to find the spirit of his wife there waiting for him. Alas she was not there, and instead her body laid there whilst the Japanese soldiers took their turns molesting her corpse. In a fit of rage he tried to attack them, but being a spirit he could do nothing. Defeated and on his knees above his wife's lifeless head he cried and cursed the gods for this cruel fate.
The Japanese men eventually left, leaving the spirit along in the field of grass staring at his dead wife. Many times he tried calling out to her only to get the wind in response. The wind carried the fog away and replaced it with a light shower of rain to which he tried to shade her from. But each tiny droplet of water phased through him and reminded him of his new pathetic existence. The sound of grass rustling caught his attention and Naoko turned to see a man in black carrying a sword. The grass blew through his body but the wind still seemed to have an effect on his clothes and hair. Without the strength to fight, Naoko accepted whatever this punishment was and spent his remaining moments in the mortal world staring at his wife.
The rain had stopped and a feeling of weightlessness seemed to encompass the broken warrior. His mind wandered to his home in the mountains and then to a world never seen before. The sound of children woke him out of his stupor and soon Naoko found himself surrounded by unfamiliar faces. Naturally his battle instincts kicked in and he pushed people out of his way, trying to find some sort of weapon to protect him from this gang. The group just laughed it off and after getting him to calm down explained to him where he was and what had happened.
Whilst taking it all in a sudden realization dawned upon Naoko. If he had ended up here then surely his wife would have as well! Without listening to the kind group he started running manically down streets searching for his love. When he failed to find her, he slept in an alley way and continued this for an extremely long time. To be precise he spent 50 years covering as much of Rukongai as possible, searching just for his wife. Eventually he gave up, he had only managed during his search to cover a hand-full of districts out of Rukongai's 100. He did not eat or drink, he would beg and tell people of what she looked like and would even reference women passing him by so as to help picture how his wife looked. After 50 long and tiring years the sad thought that he could barely remember his own wife blossomed and took root. Here he was, lost in a world he did not know and alone with no home to call his own. A state of depression hung over our unfortunate warrior.
Eventually he stumbled into District 67 and collapsed in a small alleyway. The sound of children annoyed him, the hustle and bustle of all these patch work families annoyed him. All he wanted was his wife or for this all to be some horribly slow nightmare which he will soon wake from. Begging for money he spent every last dime on alcohol, drinking himself into a self loathing stupor as often as he could and often sitting in solitude cursing his rotten luck. He soon garnished a rather bad reputation and was soon forced out of the district by a shinigami. Wandering aimlessly for years Naoko struggled to find a purpose to his life. His only reason for staying alive was in hopes that he would bump into his wife. He turned to alcohol as his savior and became a depraved drunk that wandered the streets begging for money to keep up his addiction.
One evening as he was making his way to buy another bottle to cry into. He found a young woman lost and afraid. She was being followed by a group of men clearly wanting to trap her in some alleyway to rape her. For a moment he thought to help her, but remembered his failed attempt in saving his wife and thought it best to move on and drink. The group wandered off into the distance and he found his usual shop, tossed over the pennies and quickly grabbed the bottle. Like an addict he tilted his head back and opened his mouth awaiting the sweet nectar inside to spare him his troubles. A scream pierced the air and froze Naoko in his tracks. He lowered the bottle and looked in the direction of the sound. The people still out did their best to ignore it and promptly began quickening their paces home in order to not be caught in whatever fresh mess was starting.
The images of his wifes death started playing through his mind, over and over. Grabbing his bottle tighter he ran, as fast and far as his legs could carry him. Around corners and through alleyways until he found her, on the floor surrounded by the men. Luckily they hadn't yet started, instead taking their time in scaring her. The expression on her face was the same as his wifes and in a moment of clarity Naoko knew what to do. He flung himself at the group of men, using his bottle to knock the largest out first, then as a weapon to help fight the knives they wielded. He grabbed the young girl and dragged her to her feet, shouting to run. So they ran with the group behind them, through the streets, over bridges, past the slums and districts. They ran until they couldn't hear the men behind them any more, they ran until their legs could not go any farther.
He had saved her. For once in his miserable life as a poor soul in rukongai Naoko acted like his old self. Once rested they made their way back to her home in District 59, with him taking the lead. She commented on how amazed she was to find someone who knew the streets of the slum city so well. It was this comment that would forever change Naoko, bring him back from his pit of despair. The woman thanked him by letting him stay at her families house, who were more than delighted to treat a hero to a warm bed. Under the fabric in the early hours of the morning did he contemplate his depression and vowed to make a change.
It was no small feat, but he managed to kick his drinking habit and find the man he once was. The only positive thing of his years of wandering meant that he could chart the roads of Rukongai like the back of his hand. With this information he joined a group of delivery men to help get him back into shape. Slowly but surely his health returned and a new meaning of life was found. Still he clung onto the hope that he would one day see his wife, but he kept moving forward so that he could meet her as the man she loved and not the shadow he had become.
He ended up living in District 59 and gave the money he earned to the many orphans he met on his travels. He didn't need a luxurious life style, all he needed was food in his belly and clothes on his back. Naoko learn't so much from the people of rukongai, for they all came from walks of life he never even knew existed. Friends were made and as he slowly aged through the years he could feel his old self coming back. During his spare time he would play games with the kids, only because their imaginations kept things interesting. He would wow them in the evenings about his battles as a human and would make them laugh about his antics as a child in those frozen hills.
Naoko had become and uncle to practically all the children in Rukongai. Everyday he would end up breaking up fights, making up games, even babysitting all whilst he worked his body to the bone. He eventually managed to save enough money to buy a plot of land next to his house and used the farming techniques his father taught him to turn it into his own little farm. Naturally all the kids wanted to help, so soon he had set up his own tiny workforce, instilling the knowledge he had so that when they would grow up it could be put to good use. It wasn't all clean sailing at first, with the soil being poor quality it took some time before they managed to get anything there to grow.
During his 500th year a change started to be felt within Naoko. Were once he never had to worry about food, and ate for the sake of it was finding himself feeling the pangs of hunger. He still had the energy to do his work without eating but he always felt ten times as strong whenever he did. Soon he was consuming more than what he could earn and he had to quickly find out what the cause of his hunger was. Asking around yielded no answers to his plight and not even doctors could help. The constant grumbling of his stomach led to him having a foul mood when hungry something he tried hard to never take out on the kids. They were innocent and didn't deserve him to be shouting at them just because he was feeling a bit peckish. Desperate to sort out the problem he made his way towards Seiretei in hopes their more learned doctors could find out what was wrong.
As he wandered closer and closer to the tall white tower at the heart of Soul Society quickly did he notice the sudden change in wealth in his surroundings. He always knew that those closest to the Gotei had it better but never this much. No one walked barefoot, everyone was clean and their homes looked warm and safe. Men and women strolled around wearing some of the finest gold and silver he ever laid his eyes on. A jealousy crept into his heart as observed everything. These people, how did they gain the right to live this way? When someone is 'reborn' in the society they aren't given a class, they are equal. What power did they have to look at him with disgust, pinching their noses and whispering loudly. Already he wanted to leave but the pains in his stomach were growing worse by the day and he couldn't afford the amount of food he needed to consume to get rid of them.
As he searched he eventually found himself in a beautiful open space with fruit trees planted all around. With food now dominating his mind, Naoko lunged at the trees, gorging himself and plucking them clean. A voice quickly called out to him and soon he found himself staring down at a young child in expensive looking robes. Thinking the kid was hungry too he hopped down to share his loot but the kid only shouted at him. Quickly the shinigami arrived their faces full of worry. Quickly Naoko tried to explain the situation but they wouldn't listen. The two men chose to listen over a young child than a man almost 600 years old. An anger took root and he tried to escape. It did him no good, they caught him before he managed to break into his stride and imprisoned him.
That night was spent with lectures from the shinigami about how stealing from the nobles was wrong and the same child laughing at him with all his friends. When asked why he stole the food Naoko always replied with the same thing, that he was hungry and didn't know those trees were restricted to the royalty. When asked why he spoke to the young lordling, again the explanation was a simple one; that he thought the child was hungry too. The spoilt lordling kept shouting over Naoko telling the shinigami to hurry up and cut off his head. They for once did not listen to the child and instead called upon a senior officer and a higher up in the family. Both discussed for a lengthy time what was to be done with the old thief.
When dawn came his cell was opened and the shinigami grabbed the tired old man and dragged him through the streets of Rukongai. Begging and pleading not to be killed, he told them of his small plot of land and the service he does for the orphans. His pleas fell upon deaf ears and his tongue became still when he saw that he was being taken towards a white building inside the inner ring of Seiretei. Fearing the worst he went silent and rationalised his fate, only wishing that he had managed to find his wife before his death in this world. Inside the building he saw more shinigami sitting behind desks or practicing sword stances. His confusion grew considerably when the 2 guards took him into a doctors room. The man was young and made small talk with Naoko as he checked over his body.
Taking a deep breath he asked the doctor why he was here and also mentioned the hunger that had seemingly come from nowhere in his stomach. Whilst the guard's stoney expression only grew harder at his speech, the doctor only laughed and explained what the hunger meant. To learn that he was developing Reiokyu was astonishing to Naoko! He never would have thought that he himself could gain such a power. The doctor continued explaining why he was brought to the academy. Rather than wasting cell space in a prison for stealing some meager fruit, the noble agreed that enrolling Naoko into the academy would teach him discipline and would hopefully correct his behaviour. It would benefit the Gotei to have another trainee and if he passes his exams, he need only make a formal apology to the family for his crime.
The shock that overcame the old man was great, there he was excepting his death in this world and now giving another chance. Taking it as a sign Naoko agreed to the conditions and allowed the guards to escort him to his new chambers.
Academy: (1999 - Present Day)
Now naturally Naoko's transition into the academy wasn't an easy one. Seeing as he was still technically a thief for the first couple of months he was always followed by the military police. It made making friends a bit hard at first and he wasn't allowed to go back to his home in Rukongai. Those first months were tough in some regards for Naoko. He hadn't used a weapon properly in over 500 years and now they were asking him to form a a blade so that he could learn the way of the samurai. Whilst Zanjutsu is different he didn't see it that way. Instead it reminded him of the invasion force and men that took his way of life all those long years ago. But he endured the loud whispering from the others, the stony gazes from his guards. Still after months of training his progression was incredibly slow. He just didn't have the energy in him. The only thing running through his mind was the thoughts of his friends back in Rukongai. Would they be safe? Are the children getting along alright? What about his patch of farmland? Each one of these was swirling around in his mind day in and day out.
Eventually after a lot of begging he managed to get a supervised visit home. Running as fast as his legs could carry him he worried that all he would find were empty homes and angry children. Instead as he rounded the corner he found nothing out of place. Everyone was going about their normal business as they had all those months ago. The children were still working the farm giving him an enormous sense of pride. Slowly he walked up to the children and said hello. At first they didn't recognise it was him but the moment they saw his face their mouths dropped. Some shouted at him for abandoning them and others ran straight towards him crying their eyes out. The commotion attracted the neighbours and soon everyone was questioning what had happened to their favourite uncle. Overwhelmed by their love Naoko's worries disappeared. The guards that had been watching him took note of the popularity he had with the people and decided that enough was enough. The old shinigami was a good honest man who had just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. From that day on they stopped following him allowing him to move back into his home in Rukongai and still attend the academy.
With this surge positive news he started training harder at the academy. People eventually started talking to him and laughing when he explained the situation with the guards. Quickly his popularity soared with both students and teachers alike. This didn't mean he was the top of the class or anything. Far from it, he was just about average in all regards. However he didn't care, he was still passing the exams and slowly making progress. One thing he couldn't help but feel was a slight jealousy towards other members of the academy. So many were young and capable of great feats. Feats he had dreamed of being able to do when he was a young man. He had never been able to be a true warrior like he had wished and whilst he had made his peace with that fact there was always something inside of him that told him to not give up.
Every night Naoko ended up having strange dreams. The forests of his home covered in thick blankets of snow and 2 little bears dancing and playing. They would always stop and stare at him whenever he crept up to them. His body was young in those dreams, all his old hunting gear around him ready for the kill. However the bears would always run away faster than they should have been able too in the deep snow. The chase would lead him through a thick and tall forest and always end in the same clearing. The bears would always motion to something, but before he could work out what it was Naoko would wake. Eventually after bringing it up with a teacher he was taught Jinzen so that he may discover that his recurring dream was actually his zanpakuto spirits calling out to him.
Yet despite his advanced connection with his spirits their name eluded him! They would even spend hours saying over and over and he would sit and listen as hard as he could but nothing would come. Dejected it didn't deter him from the bond that was growing between him and his spirits. Calling themselves Ame and Yuki the cubs would take the form of children and act like he was their father. With the dreams of having children being answered in a way the relationship was developed as such. He would spend hours upon hours communing and training with his zanpakuto so that he might show them how good a father he could be. With their development going strong Naoko passed the academy and set his sights on the Gotei 6. With his knowledge on beating an addiction and his unique dual zanpakuto he hoped that he may be of some use.

Tired to the Bone
The room was empty save for the large hulking man that sat upon his bed. Made of straw is was firm yet soft and eagerly awaited its occupant to drift off upon it. But that wasn't the plan tonight. Instead his legs were crossed with 2 blades balancing upon his knees. His eyes seemed to twinkle in the dark as he looked at them and stared at them with eyes full of adoration. The lateness of the hour didn't phase him, nor did the bitter nights chill bite him. Where he was heading the cold was far worse even without the draft that leaked from his closed window. Taking a deep breath he closed his eyes and rested his large stubby hands upon the hilts of the sheathed swords. The quiet and empty room fell away from him, the darkness that covered his eyes was replaced with an orange glow. His face was warm to the touch whilst his back quickly began to freeze. He did not move, nor did he attempt to open his eyes. Instead he focused on his meditative state and ignored the movement behind him.
It pushed past the trees tightly knit together with an urgency. It stopped for a moment as it's paws fell upon the small snow covered clearing. Four large stones stat silently basking in the heat of the large flame in the centre. It took a moment to register the fact that there were 4 stones, when this clearing always had three. With excited eyes it burst forth from the wood and began galloping towards the meditating figure. As it got closer and closer to the man it's paws began to shrink and its fur began to recede. Using all of the strength in its hind legs it leaped, stretching its arms out to catch the unflinching prey before it.
"IIIIIIIIII'VE GOT YOU!"
Yuki roared as she jumped on Naoko's back and pretended to nibble and devour his neck. With an outburst and cry he laughed and began to play along. He rolled forward onto the ground and made coughing and spluttering noises.
"U..ugh... p..please...don't e..eat me! Oh..w..won't someone SAVE ME!"
Yuki's hands managed to get to his underarms and began tickling like a madwoman. The sudden rush of laughter caught him off by surprise and his voice echoed through the starry night above. Quickly he decided to turn the tables and spun around, grabbing his daughter and began tickling her instead. Her cute high pitched laughter pierced his echoing cry and the pair collapsed in fits of giggles.
"Honestly Yuki, did you think you could beat your old man?"
He gave her the 'cocky dad look' which she and many other children despised so. It always seemed to tick you off, that your father knows more than you and can gloat about it.
"Yea..well I ALMOST had you!"
She rolled her eyes with the almost and let out a giggle as she got comfy in Naoko's lap and watched the flames.
"As if you could scare anyone! No one's afraid of girls scared of the dark"
A younger male voice came from behind the flames. A little bear sat upon one of the 3 rocks with a large sword sitting on its back. The shadows that came off it struck in all directions and slowly began to fill the clearing.
"Shutup Ame and leave me alone!"
She looked at the bear defiantly before yelping as a shadow crept near her. She dove for the safety of her fathers chest and the little horn full of liquid sloshed onto Naoko's chest. For a moment everyone froze. She stared at Naoko with eyes frightened. Ame watched intently from the rock and Naoko stared down at the amber on his clothes. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath and wiped it into the snow. Everyone seemed to relax then until Yuki screamed again.
"Ame stop teasing your sister! I didn't come all this way just to put you both into time out"
Ame grinned in whatever way bear cubs can grin and stood on his hind legs and began to dance. The shadows followed suit causing Yuki to shrivel into Naoko's chest even more.
"AME ENOUGH!"
He was getting tired of the little boys teasing. During the day he was mild mannered and worshiped his sister. Come the night he would change and whilst this was always the case, it did worry him. The bear changed into a young boy with dark hair and hopped off the rock. He slowly walked towards Naoko and Yuki, head held down but with an angry expression on his face. The older girl didn't move her face from the mans chest afraid to see the shadows dancing around the clearing. She turned her head slightly too see the boy drop his bum to the snow facing the forest and quickly stuck her tongue out at him before hiding from the shadows again.
Naoko sighed heavily as he placed his hand on Ame's head. He rubbed it slowly and in the circular pattern that the boy liked.
"Look you can't go teasing Yuki every time the sun goes down. What would you do if she started doing the same back?"
There was no reply which was to be expected. So they sat with the pair refusing to talk to each other and the tired old man trying to figure a way to make things right. The dancing shadows grinned a grin and bared their fangs whilst the flames flickered and singed the encroaching snow. The trio sat in silence until the old man began to sing a song one that they knew all to well.
"Send them off to the Bear Festival
to dance, to drink, to play
Send them off to the Bear Festival
to slay, to slay, to slay."
