There was a heat at her back, a smoldering flame, and she could feel the sear even as she walked several paces ahead of her recalcitrant detainee. There was no need to wonder if Tanaka would follow her, there was nothing else for the long lost woman to do when surrounded by staring eyes and strange looks. This was turning out to be a mystery for the ages, certainly of the century, and Kiriko knew that she would have to act fast to cauterize the rumors that were certain to flow after Tanaka's fight with Aizawa. And her sudden re-emergence into the lime-light after years of silence and presumed death.
Despite knowing that she held the power right now, the ability to determine Tanaka's fate, to send her away, to imprison her, to make her life a living hell, Kiriko couldn't squash the prickle along her spine of doubt. Here was a woman that she had seen so high, that she had looked up to if not with some small amount of jealousy. It was strange, odd, to have their roles reversed. To be the one who was powerful, the one who was respected, the one who had connections and ability and finesse.
Striding through the crowd, she took several rapid shortcuts, giving no mercies to a battle-wearied prisoner as she hurried to return to the Second's detention center. In reality there were a few places scattered across Seireitei for ease of utility, not all were located in the Second's compound, but they happened to be close enough to begin with and so it was only a few minutes later that Kiriko was escorting Tanaka down a long hallway and into a metal room enshrouded with silence and the barest echo of past anxiety.
Gesturing to the chair on one side of the table, Kiriko pulled out her own chair and leaned against the back. “Tanaka Mayumi... Back from the dead... There are so many ways to begin this conversation, but I think I'll start by asking, why did you come back?”
Some embolden part of her wanted to yell, to switch that out with 'do you know who I am'? She wanted to hear yes. Wanted it so badly that it burned like ice in her throat. That had always been her desire, before, back when things were simple and made sense. For Tanaka to know her. To recognize her. To look at her like she existed. But Kiriko knew the sad answer and didn't really need to ask. There was no reason for Tanaka to have known some random Shinigami, not when she had been at the height of her power, a capable and proud Lieutenant of the Fifth. There was no reason, and Kiriko really didn't want to remember her hate for this woman by hearing her dismissive reply.
