Physical Description: Nanami is not a particularly imposing figure. She stands at 5'10" and weighs around 145lbs. Her build could probably be described as lithe, she's spare and neat, compact like a dancer. Her body is one made to move which does well to conceal the killing power that lurks underneath it. She has a slim waist and hips and a modest bust which fits a size B to C bra.
There's something about her eyes, the way she studies a room, they give off a sense of ease as if whatever situation is unfolding it's one she's been through before.
Her beautiful white hair, once so long its full length tumbled well past her hips, now sets comfortable past her shoulders and it seems like she's still trying to figure out what to do with it, so it is up done up keeping the length from interfering with her.
Her clothing is almost consistently the Shinigami uniform, kept simple without ornamentation or any sort of flair. While her appearance is neat and clean one gets the impression she doesn't spend a terribly large amount of time fussing over it.
Spiritual Description: Vast, an incredible depth marks Nanami's spiritual presence. A rich tapestry of experience and life lived, her nature as an ancient being is apparent in the feel of her spirit. To those with the ability to look deeper will find something lurks within, it is a violent dangerous sensation that seems somehow more than the vast richness that surrounds it.
The Soul
Personality: It would be easy to say that Nanami is conflicted, a mess of contradictions that form a person at war with their very own nature. She is thoughtful and wary but also quick to act when needed. She delights in the suffering that she inflicts and receives but is also deeply compassionate and understanding of others. She is driven but also prone to falling victim to great bouts of despair. Honest, yet has lived a deceitful life.
It is true that Nanami is a woman in conflict, but each of these qualities holds a moderation to the other. Yes, she loves to inflict misery but she wields her blade only when necessary and harms those only when she must. She is quick to act, but only when action is called for and immediacy necessary but always with some idea in mind of what she is about to do. A long life time has led her to change her nature countless times, gradually maturing into the person she is today.

Positive Qualities:
Composed - Nanami takes a calm approach to most situations. Her vast experience ha made it difficult for her to be surprised and a lifetime of living has taught her that a clear head is the best way to way to tackle problems.
Patient - Having lived so long, one thing that Nanami is fine doing is being patient. She is anything but slow to act, but whether working quietly to expose a weakness and claim victory, or interacting with others in a social setting Nanami is capable of great patience.
Resolute - When Nanami's eyes are set on something, she keeps going to attain that goal no matter the hardships in her way. She's not infallible, or immune to stumbling but even if she does she always manages to find some well of inner strength to keep going.
Understanding - Nanami is rarely quick to judgment, she knows a great deal about people's dark sides, and about the infinite ability in people to change. The long path she's walked has taught her that people are rarely what they show on the surface and that bad decisions don't make bad people.
Compassionate - A twin to understanding Nanami is also quick to lend a hand to those in need. If she encounters someone lost, she will be there to guide them as best she can, if someone is in danger she is quick to protect them.
Playful - While she may keep herself composed in most situations, in a relaxed environment with people she is comfortable with, or after a few drinks, Nanami is quick with a joke or a playful jab. She is generally easy-going, especially when she feels she's in good company.
Honest - It's rare that Nanami will ever utter a lie for her own personal gain. She's used to living a double life, for her security and that of others, but when it comes down to the people who she cares about or people she trusts she is incredibly open.
Negative Qualities:
Sadistic - Nanami likes to hurt people, she loves being the source for a scream of pain, she delights when she tears someone's flesh, shivers at the sight of blood. Nanami loves violence, loves inflicting misery in her opponent. It is a visceral dark desire that conflicts with her very nature, yet it is there lurking just beneath the surface.
Masochistic - The flip side of her inflicting of violence, she loves to receive it. Nanami adores pain, everything she enjoys about hurting others she enjoys being on the receiving end. Some part of her relishes in being on the receiving end, as some means of justifying her own monstrousness.
Fleeting - She's never known a feeling of loyalty to any particular set of ideals outside of her own, this results in her being a rather fleeting person when it comes to individuals or organizations, when those people turn counter to her wishes she's quick to abandon them feeling justified and bound to act in accordance to her own desires more than external ones.
Curious - Endlessly seeking questions to answers that elude her, Nanami developed a scientific mind over the years of her time in the 4th and with it a bottomless curiosity that never seems entirely sated. She likes to know everything she can, knowledge on subjects, the nature and history of the people around her, gossip, anything and everything. This curiosity leads her occasionally into trouble, she's often willing to take great risks if the knowledge is good enough.
Stubborn - The flipside of her determination is her stubbornness, the will to resist outside influences that might deter her also happens to come about when she's on a bad course that someone is trying to steer her away from. Her age has given her no small amount of confidence that plays havoc with paying attention when while she's so driven people are trying to help her.
Despairing - While she is composed, confidence, strong willed and resilient, there comes a time when all of those things cannot overcome an unbeatable wall. When all her strength fails, when she can see no way to attain that goal she's set her eyes on Nanami hits despair, and hits it hard. Failure is hard for her to swallow, and it's even harder for her to get back on her feet when she has to.
The Power
Zanpakutō Spirit and Inner World:
Gamikira is Nanami's inner spirit, a recent acquaintance but a long time guardian and companion. In terms of physical appearance, she looks like a young girl, around the age of thirteen. She has clear blue eyes with curly long brown hair that sits down to the small of her back. She often wears an impassionate expression, but there are rare moments where emotion works its way in fleeting smiles, furrowed brows, and other subdued expressions.
She is calm and calculating, but what her face conceals is the great deal of compassion she has for Nanami, she cares about her more than anything, and every action she takes is for her betterment. Her temperance appears to be at contrast with Nanami's bloodlust but this too is a thin veneer. Gamikira hones Nanami's skills knowing the purpose that she will wield them, Gamikira is a killer, a honed blade but one whose purpose is singular.
Zanpakutō: Nanami's sealed Zanpakuto is quite simple in design. It is a slightly curved, slender, singled edged blade. A katana, approximately 30 inches in length with a square guard and a simple grip. There are no fancy adornments, no interesting features. It is entirely generic katana for an equally simple purpose.
Her Shikai is incorporeal, shimmering as if it hangs in between existence and shines a faint white glow, it is otherwise entirely identical to its sealed form.
Her Bankai is different, at its release the very world around Nanami changes. The air around her grows cold, a dense fog rolls in and the sound of distant battles begins to grow, slowly at first and then into a chorus. The very ground becomes slick with blood. Through the dense fog, one can faintly see the outline of abandoned swords which stretch in all directions as if they stand in the midst of an ancient battlefield.
It is a place of death, the very stench of it fills the air. It carries the very weight of impending annihilation, one knows instantly that this place has only one rule, kill or be killed.
Shikai Release Phrase: Judge, Gamikira.
Shikai Power: Nanami's blade is the temperance of Gamikira, it is a blade of mercy one that cannot inflict wounds unless specifically willed to by the user. It functions entirely like a normal blade when someone is struck a white mark is left indicating where they were struck and the distant painless sensation of having been cut.
If Nanami wishes to, up to a 24 hour period, the mark can be activated causing the originally dealt injury. After that period, the mark fades.
Bankai Release Phrase: Setsugai-ba [殺害場]
Bankai Power: Satsugai-ba is the embodiment of Nanami's sadistic and masochistic tendencies, a far cry from her Shikai, the merciful aspect of her blade, Satsugai-ba is all about one thing: suffering. Everyone who stands within its vast radius will both deliver and receive grievous injuries with each blow, simple cuts turn to serious wounds, serious wounds made into mortal injuries.
Even as the master of Satsugai-ba, Nanami is not immune to its effect but she is afforded a different advantage within it. The dense fogs that obscure vision help ensure that her victims do not escape from its depths, while she is unaffected by it those with unhoned senses will find it difficult to pursue or escape from her reach granting her an advantage in her hunt.
In simpler terms, wounds inflicted within the range of her Bankai are increased in their deadliness, and those with inferior reiatsu perception will be at disadvantage in their attempts to pursue/locate making them easy prey for her to hunt and pursue.

34 AD - Nanami kills a Shinigami taking advantage of a small village, claiming Shinigami powers of her own and becoming an outlaw.
233 AD - A blood-soaked wanderer cuts a bloody swath along the outskirts of the Soul Society, her prey is primarily Hollow, but her blade occasionally finds a bounty hunter come to take her in. Her sadistic/masochistic nature is given form.
237 AD - Nanami participates in a series of uprisings against the Seireitei, she is eventually defeated and captured.
337 AD - She is released from prison and inducted into the Academy.
348 AD - She graduates from the Academy, having been delayed by her general wildness and lack of ability in Kido.
572 AD - She serves the 5th division, an outsider at first and soon gradually finding a place in comrades but quickly becomes frustrated with her powers stagnation. She transfers to the second.
890 AD - She relishes in the thrill of assassination, killing her way through the enemies of the Seireitei in an effort to put the frustration of her stagnation behind her, it wears out eventually and a new sensation begins to develop. She grows bored, and from this, a distaste for violence begins to form. She found her way to teaching at the Academy.
1010 AD - Teaching brings new breath into her life, something she relishes in, and no small part due to her separation from a violence she's grown to dislike. She rounds herself out, but soon finds that her curiosity remains unsated as to why she cannot grow any stronger, why her soul doesn't age. She transfers herself to the 4th.
1384 AD - Having practically abandoned her killing ways Nanami throws herself into science and research, committing herself to the nature of Souls, attempting to unlock the mystery of her own seemingly broken soul. She finds little answers and slowly turns to a life of pacifism free of her dark instincts.
1385 AD - A conflict breaks out on Earth demanding her participation. She helps as a medic, but soon finds herself drawn to fight, tempted by the bloodshed around her. She loses herself again, relishes in conflict and horrified by the things she's done she refuses to fight any further for the Seireitei, she is imprisoned once more.
1486 AD - She spends a century in prison reflecting on her long life, but finds it peaceful. Seperated of any chance for violence her resolve to change that dark nature of hers strengthened and she quickly realizes that such a life could never exist within the Seireitei.
1732 AD - Nanami returns to work in the 4th, working in secret for her inevitable exile, something she knows will come the next time she is ordered to carry a blade.
1733 AD - It is the Quincy Culling that signals it, she is ordered to be executed for treason as she rallies against the Shinigami's decision. She escapes to Earth by faking her own death at the heavy cost of her own powers.
1910 AD - Nanami becomes a figure on the edge of human history watching civilizations rise and fall, watching countless wars, finding endless pursuits to fill her time with. She records everything, she obsessively consumes knowledge, and ultimately finds it empty. At the end of the second world war she closes herself off from the world, shutting herself away.
2014 AD - The Incursion occurs, not far from her home and she goes to observe. The conflict awakens her to the state of the world,and gives her an overwhelming urge to try to change things that she had not felt in many years. Unable to figure out what to do she opens a small bookstore in Karakura and does her best to help the lost souls within.
2015 AD - It isn't long before trouble finds her, attempting to guide those who come to her she runs afoul of a Shinigami whose abuse and shattering of Nanami's Zanpakuto awakens a darkness that laid dormant for almost 600 years. Those desires lead her to the attempt to murder an innocent Shinigami to reforge the blade. She is defeated, but that loss and reforging of her Zanpakuto allows her to meet her sword spirit for the first time.
2016 AD - Nanami turns herself into the Shinigami and finds herself granted clemency. After wallowing purposeless for a few months in the 4th, hiding from violence once more she decides to make a change after a conflict with an Arrancar drags her dark side out she finds, in defeating it, hope that she could become more. She seeks out Nagisa, a once acquaintance whom she helped in a dark moment, now Captain of the Fifth and earns her place as the 3rd Seat of the Fifth Division.
It isn't long after that a dark secret she's been hiding from even herself is revealed, the dark urges that run through her are not solely a design of her violent life, but a carefully manipulated change orchestrated by her Inner Hollow. Takua Megiddo reveals this truth to her, and she is brought out of her despair by her Zanpakuto Spirit, who helps her confront and ultimately overcome her inner darkness. She finds peace with who she is, and ultimately attains Bankai.
