Hi.
Some of you might know me by my alias: Tova. Others, by my other alias: Justin.
I am not a frequently participatory member of the casual aspects of this community that don't involve shitposting, baneposting, or making Miyuki furious. This is a bit tragic, said no one but me. So to appeal to my audience of one, I've started my own topic here.
In it, you'll find a shortage of funny videos or pictures (unless they're really funny). What you will find is a lot of writing. Ramblings about this or that, thoughts that strike me as interesting and worth sharing (hint: they're not), or anything else I have an opinion on. The subject matter will range from Information Technology to Disney movies to geopolitical news.
As a fair warning, this thread will, no doubt, contain a heavy amount of shitposting as well.
Until then, we'll start with a very short post:
Oh god less than fifteen minutes until Windows 10
If I'm here tomorrow it's either because
A. My upgrade wasn't ready at midnight or B. I cancelled it
There is no situation in which I'm here tomorrow while also running on Windows 10.
I've been using it since September and I'm very, very happy with it, don't get me wrong.
But my luck isn't good enough that an in-place upgrade like this is going to work flawlessly. There's just no way.
Once I make it through, though, I'll be sure to report back with my findings.

You know, I'm really not sure where people are finding all of these problems.
It noticed my native resolution right away, I haven't had anything go wrong with my hardware, it's quick, and I've even ditched Chrome for Edge and have yet to regret it. Which is a surprise simply because Chrome has had a much longer time to mature than Edge. Cortana has been nothing but useful, though I'd love to see more built-in PC functions even at the risk of people fucking them up.
"HEY CORTANA, SHUT DOWN" "YOU SON OF A BITCH I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME" "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" "FUCKING CHRIST, MIKA"
^ Would totally happen, we all know it.
It works, it works really well, and I had literally no issues with the upgrade. The compatibility with all of my previous programs is also a huge plus. Civilization 4 from 2005 even works. I can use DOSBox and Masters of Orion 2 too.
I suppose a lot of it depends on your hardware and current setup, but the upgrade to 10 has been nothing but a plus for me.

The issue was the same with Windows 7, really.
I remember getting chewed out when I told people, "Windows 7 will succeed Windows XP in the office."
The answer was always, "Why go to Seven when XP works just fine?"
There was no counter-answer. There was no reason. It is only the inexorable march of time that drives future OS adoption for most people, or any future adoption a tall. Staples still uses an inventory software developed in the 1980s.
Even XP was met with fierce resistance: product activation is evil
My father skipped XP entirely because he "didn't need it". His next machine was a Windows 7 machine on release day.
In that regard, no version of Windows has ever, ever been a "holy shit go upgrade to this now" because businesses never want to risk their productivity software not working properly on the new OS.
But, eventually, you get to a point where you have to leave Windows XP if you want any hope of being able to use the internet ever again. IE8 and unsupported versions of Chrome and Firefox will only get you so far.
This is, historically, the only force I've seen drive the adoption of successive versions of operating systems in productivity-oriented environments.
For me, the defining features of Windows 10 are the Cortana integration (I use Windows Phone, after all), the Micrsoft Edge browser (I've already ditched Chrome), and the introduction of new development technologies such as DX12 and (I do believe) new versions of their various development languages.
Not to mention little things like expanded keyboard shortcut support in CMD. The new Task View is cool too. PowerShell 5 is pretty nifty. Continuum seems to work really well too.
And yet none of this will drive wide-spread adoption in the business world right away because businesses are slow and upgrading is money spent, if not on the operating system, then on the time it takes to implement. The resistance to change will never go away unless computing in business takes some pretty wild turns. Windows 7 took five years to become dominant after release because of that.
As awesome as it looks, the HoloLens from Microsoft won't be enough to force a premature change.
There is nothing I have ever experienced in my entire life that excites me more than SpaceX and what they're doing. Rocket reusability, multi-planetary civilization, and one million human beings with a first-ever classification all their own.
Martians.
Give it a read. Give the first two parts a read too, preferably before the part I just linked you to.

Orbiting the largest star in that binary system I mentioned here is this gem.
Crowned by twin auroras is a Titan-like world, absolutely frigid, sporting an 'exotic' form of multicellular marine and terrestrial life. I suppose the 'exotic' is meant to denote that it can conform with Titan's strange chemistry?
Which would mean that those things that look like seas are likely made of ethane, methane, and propane.
