She looked at her office one last time, scanning the empty walls and pausing by the large bay windows that led out into her garden. This was a room that held so many ghosts, not just of the dead but of the past as well. The future itself had been built in this room, and after today it would no longer be the home she had grown so used to. Tugging her sleeves into place, the long freshly laundered haori on her back a bright badge showing the world just what had changed behind closed doors. Her hair was down, an inky cascade that blurred and smudged the number on her back, shielding from prying eyes exactly the shift that had occurred in the last few hours.
But inside it was not so silent, her heart beating a rapid tattoo against her collarbone like a fragile bird trying to break free. She had promises to keep and a world to change. Becoming Captain Commander changed very little in the scheme of things. Her plans could become company policy now, certainly, but it would still be the world against her soldiers. Tomorrow nothing about her challenge would have changed. The enemy still stretched as far as she could sense and the weakness in her own world still lingered, curling around the root like a deadly sickness.
Ine had given her this at least, a clean slate to work from. He'd made her promise a great many things, reminding her again and again just what she was inheriting and what she could not give up when it came time to shoulder this burden. It was a memory Kiriko did not want to forget, the whisper of his heavy hand on her shoulder, that warmth seeping into her core. Whatever their differences, he believed in her cause.
And so she would take up the flag he had dropped at her feet, and this time things would change. This time change wouldn't be a set of words, it wasn't going to be a paltry reshuffling of duties. Change came on the wings of a flame and she had promised to burn the world to ash if that was what it took to sear away all that was wrong with Soul Society. The tender flesh that was left would be enough to rebuild from. They had more than enough medics at hand to shape and mend whatever good got caught up in her blaze of retribution, but it was time to call in the debts and she would allow no one to escape their due penance.
Striding away from the Second, she took a direct course to the meeting hall at the First's quadrant where she would await the rest of the Captains. It was time now. Time to gather the tips of her spears and assemble her troops. War was inevitable, so they would just have to strike first and strike well.
