The Sun Lit Soul Reaper
On The Surface__
Name: Shinsei Madarame
Nickname: Shin
Age / Apparent Age: 149 years old/Appears to be in early 20's. (18 years in Rukongai/ 5 years in Soul Academy/ 126 years in Gotei 5.)
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Japanese
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Height & Weight: 5'8" in height & 143 lbs in weight.
Fluent Languages: English(American), Japanese
Voice Type: Shinsei's voice is that of a Baritone, and can best be described as "Monotonous." While he usually speaks in an indoor voice, his lower tone can often cause him to sound as if he is speaking more softly. This occurred to Shinsei early on in his adolescent years, so he tries to speak up a bit more so he doesn't have to repeat himself. Though his tone may be low and wearisome, Shinsei does speak with a proficient vocabulary. His 'short and to the point' mannerisms do become more notable in his speech, as he doesn't like to ramble while conversing with others, it even annoys him when his subconscious dialogue carries on for too long. When someone speaks to Shinsei, his responses usually give away his overall sentiment, or lack there of. It’s a shame for Shinsei, as his heavy tone is one that would be suit to give commands, but his manner of speech resembles that of a young man trying to get through a hangover. This isn't to say Shinsei cannot project himself in a professional way, as he always speaks to his superiors with respect. But the more comfortable Shinsei and his higher ups become with each other, the more he will let loose and talk as he usually would, though still minding his P's and Q's. Its rather odd for Shinsei to show much emotion in his speech, but those who hear it notice a definite change when happens. When Shinsei expresses himself in words, it is easily discernible from his usual chatter. His broad vocabulary becomes more apparent and he does not stray from the subject matter that places him in this state, whether it be anger, sadness, unease, ect. If Shinsei didn't get his point across before, just know he will now.
Loyalties: Soul Society
Theme Song: Colors by FLOW
Hair & Eyes: Shinsei has short, dirty blond hair that is often undone and resembles "bed head". His hair is long enough to get in his eyes, so he keeps it parted on both left and right sides, leaving some hair in the middle that reaches down to the space between his eyes just above the bridge of his nose. Shinsei's eyes are a dark brown color, and often have a dull expression. Although few people have said to have seen a sort of spark in his eyes before.
Physical Description: Shinsei has a rather sluggish posture, leaving people to believe he has just woken up from a nap(Which wouldn't be far from the truth). Shinsei's skin is a natural beige color, has a fine complexion, and grows a fair amount of body hair. He also has a partial beard, dark in color, short in length, but not fully grown in. Shinsei's scent is that of a faint fragrance of fallen leaves covering a forest ground in Autumn, although he can gain a certain musk after strenuous exercise or not bathing for days at a time. Shinsei usually has a somber expression on his face, only deviating from this look if he is surprised or aggravated.
Shinsei's battle stance, however, is quite the opposite of his casual stance. He has superb footing, and a stern posture, like that of an exceptional swordsman. His right hand is his dominant hand, though he has made a mental note to use his left hand more often in order make himself versatile with both.
Shinigami Attire: Shinsei wears the standard Shinigami apparel, though his uniform may be a bit worn or wrinkled for not tending to his own laundry from time to time.
Gigai Attire: In warm weather, Shinsei's Gigai sports a black t-shirt with a white decal on the front outlining the skull from a Shinigami's badge. He also wears a dark grey, long sleeve dress shirt on top of the t-shirt, with the sleeves rolled up just below the elbows. He wears brown jeans, black socks, and dark blue high top shoes that resemble Chuck Taylors. In colder weathers, Shinsei will replace his dress shirt with a dark red, zip up hoodie(If its raining or just really windy) or a blue puffer jacket with fur along the hood(For winter weather like snow or very low temperatures). He also has a pair of white earphones and an MP3 player but hardly gets to use them since he is usually using his Gigai when on duty.
Demeanor: Shinsei has a demeanor that is rather dreary and lack luster. His outlook on life is pretty tedious, and can get boring fast to others. Shinsei prefers to keep himself distant from others, and tries to avoid being the center of anyone's attention. He often aims for lower ranking duties like delivering messages across sereitei, simple patrols throughout sereitei or the human world, or housekeeping for division barracks.
If he isn't working, Shinsei takes the free time he has and does what he is best at, napping. Shinsei's naps are a natural part of his day to day life, taking them whenever he can, usually in a shaded location(His bed, on the side of a building, on a rooftop at dusk, ect.). When attending meetings or announcements, Shinsei finds himself a spot in the very back of the crowd, as to avoid being singled out of the crowd for anything. He also tries to avoid training sometimes by taking odd jobs from other Shinigami, or pretending that he nodded off before hand. Although he is stubborn at times, Shinsei can be persuaded if food is involved in his duties or is a form of compensation for his compliance.
He is also dutiful, and respects the authority around him. Though he may try to weasel his way out of higher ranking work, when he must perform his duties, he does so to the letter. He does so to avoid conflict, but he tries his best to remain under the radar of his superiors, as to avoid promotions and other higher honors. This way he can fulfill his responsibilities as a Shinigami and still afford to slack off. Though when on duty, Shinsei still carries his sluggish traits with him, mostly expressed through his speech. Though when engaged in battle, Shinsei becomes more serious, his focus becoming more keen, and his lazy attitude is replaced with a more annoyed one, sometimes causing him to make small remarks or complaints regarding his current situation.
Shinsei doesn't handle well when someone tries to get to know him on a personal level,or any lever beyond a professional one for that matter. Because of this, he often eats meals alone, patrols alone(Most of the time), and avoids events such as parties or other social gatherings. If confronted by an awkward situation, Shinsei will attempt to make excuses as to why he must be excused, or simply avoid confrontation as best he can. Aside from all of this, Shinsei is kind in nature and means well, but his stern attitude can make him oblivious to how people view him and his behavior.
Shinsei does not care for bullying, and will try his best to see an end to it when he sees it happening. This is especially heightened when the victim is a woman. If it can be helped, however, Shinsei will avoid most conflict so long as his intervention is not necessary, and looks to fighting or arguing as a last resort. Though Shinsei has no issue with putting down Hollows and other evil entities, for he believes that they are a special case in most situations, and cannot be helped. Shinsei also does not bode well with brutes who are brash and insensitive to others. This is the main reason Shinsei did not join Squad 5 of the Gotei 5, as most of its members are composed of brutal beasts of men with an uncanny desire for battle and violence.
Spiritual Description: Shinsei's spiritual pressure does not feel like pressure at first. To others with spiritual pressure lower than his, they can feel or see nothing, but gain a feeling that something is out of place about Shinsei. Those who are closer to his level or are at his level in spiritual pressure can see a faint yellow aura around him, and feel a slight warmth when in close proximity to him. Those higher in level of spiritual pressure can see a fairly bright yellow aura around Shinsei, moving about like small waves in water, accompanied by an intense warmth and small amount of pressure. Shinsei's spiritual pressure, however, doesn't feel like a gravitational force being applied from above. Instead, Shinsei's spiritual pressure exerts itself outward from his body, and resembles a light breeze to anyone within the same area as him. When Shinsei expresses his spiritual pressure at full power, anyone with a basic skill level or higher in detecting spiritual pressure can feel the full force of his reitsu, which would now feel like a strong wind blowing against them. Along with this comes a heat erupting from Shinsei's aura which becomes quite bright and gold in color, the small wave like effect now much larger and more erratic.
Behind The Eyes__
Personality: Shinsei has a few morals that he lives by. Be of aid only when aid is needed. Don't fight unless it is unavoidable. Don't let people in too much, it only makes for more casualties. Shinsei's drive comes from his mother, who in her last moments before her death, showed great fortitude. He aspires to avoid ending up like his mother, who was loving but expressed too much positive emotion and died because of it from Shinsei's standpoint. He also does not wish to end up like his father who was a brute of a man that expressed too much negative emotion, causing him to murder Shinsei's mother. Shinsei views his mother as a sort of saint, while he sees his father as a kind of monster, though that would change a bit later down the down the road in Shinsei's life. Instead, Shinsei chooses to remain indifferent when it comes to his emotions, showing very little of both negative and positive emotions.
Shinsei is a lone wolf, not because he wants to be, but because he feels that he needs to be. Talking to Shinsei may not be the worst or best of experiences, but interacting with him shows that he has little to no interest in most things. This also played a role into his choosing of becoming a member of 4th Division, since the Division still carries basic Shinigami duties and is in favor of more work inside Sereitei, it gave Shinsei a better chance to blend in and keep a steady position and work ethic. Joining the 3rd Division would mean Shinsei would be responsible for saving lives and attending to the injured or ill, a thought that Shinsei is not to comfortable with. Becoming a member of the 2nd Division would have Shinsei training to be an assassin of sorts, which would interfere with his lifestyle. And lastly, being a member of the 1st Division would place Shinsei in the top tier of Shinigami, giving him more responsibilities and broader reputation, none of which Shinsei wants.
Though trying to get to know Shinsei can be an ordeal in itself, this doesn't keep Shinsei from having companions of his own. He may act like he doesn't desire friendship, but at heart Shinsei craves companionship as much as anyone else. This is a rather difficult feat for most to achieve with Shinsei, as well as a difficulty for himself. Since Shinsei is so used to being by himself or in the company of his Zanpakuto Spirit, he finds making friends to be a troublesome task, especially since he drives most people away with his outward behavior. This hasn't stopped some people from getting to know Shinsei, and because of the impression they made on him, he has learned to open up somewhat.
The truth is, Shinsei views himself as more of a danger than most things. Because of a traumatizing event from Shinsei's childhood, he now see's his presence as slight omen. He believes that others are safer from harm when he is not around. Though this is Shinsei's main reason for his solitary nature, he does not chalk up every misfortune to this superstition of his. This sense of self degradation is what keeps people from seeing Shinsei's true intentions, his hidden personality traits, and his utmost prowess. Shinsei is truly a kind soul, and if he could, he would devote much of time to making friends, helping others, and bettering himself.
Shinsei is quite the intellectual, and is skilled in several fields, but this is all covered up with his lazy attitude and bleak behavior. The true potential Shinsei possesses comes out when he is in the heat of battle and must think on his feet. This comes as a surprise to many, since most people view Shinsei as a lousy sloth of a Shinigami. But some few that can see past Shinsei's facade, expect as much from him, and are interested in what he is truly capable of. Another trait of Shinsei's persona that most don't get to see is his intellect. Behind closed doors, Shinsei is quite the craftsman at heart, and would make quite the engineer. This could also play another factor into why he chose to join the Gotei 5's 4th Division. This exceptional intelligence is how Shinsei created his "Clay Bombs" and developed his own unique fighting styles.
When in battle, Shinsei's personality is shifted somewhat. If he is fighting against an opponent that is of lesser strength and power than he is, he usually approaches the situation as an obstacle instead of a fight. Sometimes Shinsei will avoid the fight totally if he sees no point in it, most times by making excuses or simply stating that he doesn't have time for it. But if he is forced to fight anyway, he will offer to end it quickly, mostly in a vexed tone. But if Shinsei is up against an opponent that he knows will be a challenge or of a real danger to him and or others, Shinsei steps up to the plate, and his peeved attitude disappears. Shinsei will then take on a solemn expression, unmoved, and totally focused on his opponent. Though his lazy behavior has kept Shinsei in the lowest ranks of the Gotei 5, this doesn't disrupt his duties to himself as a Shinigami. Shinsei does train regularly during the week, his weekends usually being his rest days. He takes time to improve on techniques and push his limits even further.
The only person who truly presses Shinsei's buttons is his Zanpakuto Spirit, Ni~Tsu(Short for Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai). Ni~Tsu has a very kind and generous nature about her, and often tries to get Shinsei to open and be his true self around her. Since Ni~Tsu is in a sense, a part of Shinsei, he views her as the better part of himself. Shinsei will try to do what he can to make Ni~Tsu happy, so long as it doesn't contradict to much with his personality. Simple favors, conversation, or even napping with Ni~Tsu is enough make her happy. Shinsei knows that so long as Ni~Tsu is happy, he can be too. This sense of envy Shinsei has for Ni~Tsu also ties in to his relationship with his mother, whom was similar to Ni~Tsu in many ways. Ni~Tsu knows this much, and hopes to give Shinsei as much strength as the memory of his mother does.
Shinsei isn't one to get angry very easily, in fact, it takes a lot to achieve that. Shinsei will usually bury his anger deep within himself, staying true to his indifferent ways But if pushed to that limit in battle, Shinsei won't become enraged, but will channel his anger into his strength and attacks while appearing to be only serious in expression. If something annoys Shinsei and gets on his nerves too much, he may burst out in a fit, but this is rarely seen by others and usually only comes out around his friends. That said, even though Shinsei has a pretty stern personality, he still displays general expressions of disgust, irritation, confusion, discomfort, nervousness, and even slight fear on rare occasions.
Positive Qualities:
- Understanding- While his mannerisms suggest otherwise, Shinsei is a pretty understanding individual. Taken from personal experience, Shinsei knows that not all is as it seems at first. So it is in his best interests to stay skeptical, but to take into account everyone's feelings. Even though this doesn't cause Shinsei to budge much, it does give him a bit more insight for the future, some of which he does apply to his day to interactions with others.
"Not everything in this world is evil, hell even hollows are capable of understanding and mercy when they've evolved enough. Is it so crazy to believe there could be monsters out there with more humanity than us?"
- Cautious- Keeping to himself has its own share of perks for Shinsei, sometimes given him a better perspective of the world around him. Often times, Shinsei finds himself being a fly on the wall, seeing and hearing things that make him question others. This has developed a caution within Shinsei. Shinsei may act as if he is less than aware of certain goings on at times, but this is for the most part a shroud that Shinsei has placed over his true, perceptive nature. Shinsei is much more careful with how we handles certain situations, making sure to make mental notes of things to keep in mind about people, things, places, ect.
"He wouldn't challenge us like this if he didn't have something planned for us once we engaged him...don't rush him at once, keep yourself at a distance."
- Dutiful- Casually Shinsei is about as productive as paint drying, but professionally he performs wonderfully, given that most of his jobs are simple tasks that anyone can do. Shinsei considers small jobs as chores, which in his mind are fairly easy to accomplish if one handles them right away.
"Kid, if you want to be a Captain someday, you're going to have to sift through tons of little jobs before you get there. Where do you think the current Captains started out after the Academy? As paperboys like you and me." - Caring- This trait presents itself more when Shinsei is around the presence of Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai(Shinsei's Zanpakuto Spirit). Shinsei tends to care more for Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai, like a close friend. When it comes to others, Shinsei is a bit more reluctant to show his feelings, wanting to avoid making new relationships with people. This is another characteristic tied to events in his past. But if he feels he can open up to someone, he does so little by little, but makes sure not to express too much due to his cautious attitude.
"You're not just a blade Ni~Tsu, you're someone very close to me, someone that I care about. A Zanpakuto dies with their wielder, but a Shinigami can live without their Zanpakuto. But thats not true, because if you died, it would kill me inside." - Resourceful- Shinsei tries his best to have a back up plan in case things go sour. That said, he makes precautions in order to get out of bad situations. While not prepared for every outcome, Shinsei is ready for things like simple traps, ambushes, and escapes.
"Keep running, I'll use a clay bomb to slow them down!" - Neutral- For the most part, Shinsei doesn't like to take sides in most situations. This helps him stay out of business that doesn't involve him, granting him less attention.
"Sorry guys, this quarrel doesn't involve me so I'm gonna head out. See ya." - Collected- Shinsei's "Lone Wolf" personality has benefited him over the years, allowing him to keep a calm and rational attitude when things get tense. This has helped him in battles, arguments, and other stressful situations.
"You want me to get angry, and act like a brute, possibly attack you. But I'm not like you, I don't snap easily." - Compliant- Even though Shinsei would rather work alone, he is not against working with others. He follows his orders without question, most of the time, anyway. When working with a team, Shinsei will do his best to make sure he can bring something to the table.
"Hey man, I'm not crazy about pairing up with you either, but orders are orders. So lets just get this done and over with."
Negative Qualities:
- Tedious- Shinsei's day to day routine barely changes aside from receiving different missions or duties. This can make his life repetitive and tiresome to others, but Shinsei has no issue with this what so ever.
"I'd much rather just eat dinner and nap, thanks for the offer though." - Quiet- Shinsei isn't much of a talker, even small talk with Shinsei is for the most part, short and to the point. This isn't to say that Shinsei speaks in a quiet tone, however. Shinsei speaks with an indoor voice much like anyone else would. He's just the silent type.
"Maybe we just shouldn't say anything, eh?" - Oblivious- Shinsei has a sad habit of being unaware to certain aspects of peoples' behavior. Shinsei has a hard time discerning when someone has feelings for him or when someone has taken offense by his words or actions.
"I don't get why you're so pissed off, its not like I insulted you or anything, jeez." - Uninterested- Shinsei typically doesn't bother with most things outside of his usual day to day activities. If anyone invites him to something, he will most likely decline kindly, and continue on with his day. That said, Shinsei barely ever concerns himself with the troubles or celebrations of others. If Shinsei ever appears at a social event, its usually because there is free food involved.
"Thanks, but no thanks. You guys will have just as much fun without me." - Distant- Shinsei separates himself from his peers intentionally, but for a selfless reason. Shinsei views his presence as a burden to others, believing that no matter how strong he is, he will never be able to truly protect anyone for long. This is another trait that is tied directly to past events in Shinsei's life.
"Look, I get that you wanna be friends and all, but you'll just end up being someone else for me to worry about. I already have myself for that." - Cold- While he tries to be kind, Shinsei can come across as pretty indifferent. He tends to act this way in order to drive away certain individuals that continuously pester him. This side of him comes out more when facing an opponent that significantly aggravates him.
"Enough with your speech, I wanna end this quick." - Blunt- To suit his personality to the letter, Shinsei is not a man of many words. Unless he is engaged in an interesting conversation that appeals to him, Shinsei is for the most part, short and to the point with his dialogue. Often giving short answers with little substance, Shinsei doesn't offer much to talk about.
"Sorry, can't talk, I'm busy." - Secretive- To clarify, Shinsei is secretive mainly about his past, his feelings, and his personal life. Anything else is an open book with Shinsei, except its more of a short story. Shinsei does not like to show his feelings for anyone in order to keep relationships from growing between them. Shinsei's past still haunts him, and distastes talking about it, and will refuse to when questioned. As for Shinsei's personal life, the less people know about him than they should, the better for everyone.
"I'd rather not talk about that, if you don't mind."
Likes:
- Naps- Shinsei enjoys his rests. Many times, if someone is looking for Shinsei, they will most likely find him napping someplace in the shade. Most times Shinsei naps to rest, other times he enters his meditative state while napping to visit his Inner World.
- Different variety of pastas- Shinsei dabbles in most foods and delicacies, but his soft spot truly belongs to pastas. Some of his favorite dishes are Spaghetti and Meatballs, Fettuccine Alfredo, Chicken/Shrimp Alfredo, and the list goes on.
- Watching sunsets/rises- A rare sight to see is Shinsei stopping during his day to appreciate a sunset. If up to it, Shinsei will travel to the outer areas of Sereitei, and find the tallest building in that area to sit upon the rooftop to watch the sunset. The sunrise, however, is more of a daily observation by Shinsei as the sun peers in to his quarters through a window and wakes him up every morning. Shinsei likes to watch the orange and yellow radiance shimmer in between the buildings outside before falling back to sleep.
- Trance Music- Shinsei had never really bothered himself to listen to much music, at least not until he patrolled an urban city underground scene one night in the 1990's and discovered Trance Music. His ears resonated with the smooth and tranquil sounds that filled the air. From then on, Shinsei researched this music type, and now uses it to put his mind at ease when under great stress.
- Different kinds of lights from music festivals/raves- Much like his interest in sunsets and sunrises, Shinsei has a greater appeal to bright and colorful light, much like the ones used at concerts, raves, and other musical events. Shinsei is perplexed by how many shapes and colors and patterns these lights can take, and is even more mesmerized when the lights transition from one color, shape, or pattern to the next. These types of lights can place Shinsei in a good mood, and can even get him to crack a smile.
- Being alone- This comes as no surprise to anyone that knows Shinsei. Shinsei prefers to be by himself above all other options, the only considered exception being the company of his Zanpakuto Spirit.
- Entering his Inner World to rest- This is the ultimate getaway from life's ordeals for Shinsei. Coming to his Inner World allows him to take a break from his work without being bothered. While his Zanpakuto Spirit does reside there and enjoys spending time with him, she is considerate of his desire to be left alone at times and will leave him be.
Dislikes:
- Brutes- Shinsei despises people who are brash, arrogant, and self centered. These people are usually larger and much more built than Shinsei, and remind him of his father, who was a brute himself.
- Bullying- Shinsei detests bullying of any sort, though he will not always intervene when it is occurring. The reason for this is he knows that whoever is being picked on can take on the bully and win, or someone else buds in before he can. Though Shinsei dislikes violence, he is not afraid to take a few hits or even a beating in place of someone who can't defend themselves.
- Anything that tastes bitter- This is the only time Shinsei will spit up food. Bitter tastes don't sit well with Shinsei, even as a child he didn't enjoy bitter foods.
- When people constantly pester him- Naturally, Shinsei becomes rather annoyed when anyone bothers him for too long. Gradually, he will become more and more irritated, but will hold back any outbursts or negative comments he may have in mind.
- Being bothered while napping- If there's one thing that annoys Shinsei more than being disturbed, its being disturbed as he tries to nap. Shinsei has habit of napping during the day, when most people are busy attending to their jobs, hobbies, and other activities. And being a Shinigami means that you can be summoned or given a new duty at any time, which irks Shinsei deeply.
- Being the center of attention- Having the spotlight shine of him is an awkward and uncomfortable setting for Shinsei, as he prefers to blend in and remain undetected. Whenever Shinsei does become the focus of attention by others, he will sulk at the thought of the situation, but do his best push on through it.
- Borrowing things- Shinsei likes to be prepared for the most common of situations, so it is rare that he will ask a favor or request to borrow something. His sense of pride doesn't usually show when he does need to.
- Owing people- Probably the most relatable of Shinsei's quirks. Shinsei likes his relationships with others to be short lived, and having to owe someone a favor just adds more fuel to the fire in Shinsei's opinion.
- Making small talk- Shinsei isn't a fan of small talk. He thinks of it as awkward, since he usually has nothing to say. That said, small talk with Shinsei goes almost nowhere fast.
- Unnecessary violence- A real pet peeve of Shinsei's. Shinsei understands the value of violence if a situation escalates to a point where peace cannot be made. But senseless slaughter, unmerciful torture, and other cruel acts of violence do not bode well with Shinsei, and are a quick was to get on his bad side.
- Surprises- As one can imagine, one who naps most of the day, and is by himself most of the time, can be startled and caught off guard quite easily. Shinsei has been a victim of surprises before, and does not take them well. Most times when Shinsei is surprised, he will let out a small shout, and if the surprise comes from a person purposely, Shinsei will give a short rant about it. Though still ticked off, Shinsei will exhale to calm himself down and regain his composure.
Gikon Personality: Shinsei's Gikon isn't exactly how you would expect one to be in Shinsei's possession. The Shinigami Scientists in charge of creating Gikon wanted to test out a new model, and Shinsei was their unfortunate test participant. That said, Shinsei's Gikon was given a charming personality, and a confident attitude...at least when it came to the ladies. This resulted in Shinsei giving his Gikon the name Ako, short for Akogarenomato which means "Heartthrob" in Japanese. Ako is a real smooth talker, and often uses this trait to pick up women when occupying Shinsei's Gigai, which often gets Shinsei into more trouble than he would like. Shinsei makes it a habit of reminding Ako to stay out of trouble and not to flirt with women, which never really works as Ako will still hit on most women he sees, sometimes getting caught by Shinsei and receiving a pummeling to the head with Shinsei's foot. Regardless of this, Ako isn't the first person to brace himself for a fight either, usually becoming frightened when confronted by an intimidating enemy or scary situation. This can often cause Ako to hide behind people or objects and give excuses as to why he can't fight or do anything for that matter. But Shinsei has a way of urging Ako into stepping up, and Ako will suck up his fears to help Shinsei as best he can.
Strength Of The World__
Zanpakutō Spirit
Inner World: Shinsei's Inner World is a vast desert land, with dry, cracked ground, and a clear blue sky with little to no clouds. The sun in this world never sets or rises, but instead revolves around the desert land at an early day point in the sky, emitting only a comforting warmth instead of a scorching heat. The revolution time of this sun is unclear since the sun never rises or sets, leaving the world in an endless daytime. Throughout the land are large, ebony, cylinder shaped pillars protruding vertically or diagonally from the ground. The pillars are all 30' in diameter, but the length varies from 20' to 6 stories high. In the center of all the pillars, approximately 63'away is an obsidian boulder, 10' in height, and 25' in diameter. The boulder has molten, yet smooth surface, and neither it nor the pillars become hot even though they sit in the sun constantly. Shinsei usually rests upon the boulder when in his Inner World, and uses the pillars as targets and obstacles in his training. If any of the pillars are destroyed, a new one rises in its place. Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai can also raise and lower pillars, as well as make water rise from the cracks along the dry desert ground to help make the training ground more challenging for Shinsei.
The enviornment of Shinsei's Inner World changes depending on his emotional state. Most of the time it is stagnant and unchanged, but if Shinsei is upset or filled with rage, the pillars in direct vicinity to him will begin to crack and fall apart, and an eclipse will begin to slowly block out the sun while following its revolution. During this eclipse, the cracks of the desert ground will begin to emit a gentle but concerning red glow, illuminating the desert as far as the eye can see as if the very depths of hell were just underneath the arid landscape
Zanpakuto Spirit Appearance: Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai takes the form of a young woman in her early twenties with soft skin just a bit paler than Shinsei's, and straight, dark brown hair, reaching down to the middle of her torso. She has her hair cut into bangs on the front, except the very far side of her bangs, which reach down in front of her shoulders. Her lips are thin, and her nose is small, complimenting her body's figure. Her eyes are a brown hazel with shimmer in them that could challenge the sea itself. She has a petite build, standing at 5'3" in height and weighing in at 132 lbs. She wears a kimono made from silk, that is pearl in color with maroon trimming, and extends down just above her feet. She also wears traditional rose pink Japanese zori on her feet, and a bronze horned sun circlet around her head.
Zanpakuto Spirit Demeanor: Unlike Shinsei, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai doesn't share his sluggish posture or distant attitude. Instead she has a joyous sense about her, which is most depicted in her speech, as she is always kindly greeting Shinsei upon his arrival to his Inner World or asking him to play one of her games with her. Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai stands with a well balanced posture, and carries herself with a care free spirit. Most times she will be seen with her hands clasped together. When Shinsei isn't around, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai spends her time pacing about in Shinsei's inner world, sometimes sitting atop the large black pillars scattered about or napping on top of the singular boulder at the center of the desert world. When Shinsei is hard at work outside of the field training or working on something for the 4th Division, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai takes the time to come up with new "games" for Shinsei to play with her. These games are actually well thought out, strategic obstacle courses or challenges for Shinsei to overcome. These games reveal the much more cunning and clever side of Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai, a trait that is often masked by her sincere and bubbly behavior. It is also the only instance where she acts as more of a teacher than a friend to Shinsei, but only slightly, as she still treats these training exercises as games. During these games, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai will laugh blissfully and taunt Shinsei in a childish manner to provoke him.
Zanpakuto Spirit Personality: Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai has a calm and fragile personality, but is caring and sweet. Due to Shinsei's solitary nature, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai doesn't connect with Shinsei as much as she would like to. Instead of acting as a mentor to Shinsei, she instead looks up to him in a way, viewing him as the closest thing she has to a friend. Though Shinsei can be cold to her at times, for the most part, Shinsei prefers Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai's company over anyone else's. Shinsei often enters a meditative state while napping just to visit Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai in his Inner World. She enjoys his visits, and tries to make the best of them. The two of them usually nap together or train, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai tries to talk about Shinsei's personal life but Shinsei almost always digresses and deviates away from the subject. While most people give up early on in getting to know Shinsei, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai chooses to keep trying, as she understands Shinsei better than anyone, and gets why he is the way he is. She has a large amount of faith in him, and is always urging him to make friends and to try smiling more. She will often try to cheer him up, but if he doesn't respond well or not at all, she will crawl back into her shell, so to speak. On the other hand, if he does respond well, she will become joyful, and often hug him. Whenever Shinsei enters a battle or is in danger, however, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai will become slightly more courageous and level headed in order to be as useful to Shinsei as possible. She also becomes more and calculated, and acts as a sort of motivational coach for Shinsei when things get dicey. When Shinsei is upset, and his inner world begins to become eclipsed, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai will begin to feel sense of dismay and and a slight chill up her spine.
Zanpakutō
Zanpakuto Name: Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai(Sun Puppeteer)
Release Phrase: "Radiate, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai."
Zanpakuto(Sealed)- The sealed form of Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai is fairly representative of herself; repressed and seldom active. She takes the form of a standard katana, the hilt being 10 and a half inches long and the blade being 29 and a half inches long. The hilt wrapping is a sage green, while the hilt underneath is a saffron yellow. The hand guard is circular, with a sun sculpture molded onto the top and bottom of it, and has a silver finish. The blade itself is steel grey, with silver lining the edge of the blade. The sheathe is onyx black, 30 inches long and made from an unknown material that absorbs sunlight.
Zanpakuto(Shikai)- In it's Shikai form, Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai takes on a form similar to that of the famous Regalia Sword from Japanese legend, Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. The sword's hilt is 5 inches long, and a light gold in color. The hilt is crafted with small and intricate carvings in it's metal exterior. The bottom resembles that of a sprouting Lotus Flower, the hilt itself etched with a diamond net pattern, and placed at the top section below the hand guard is a cap shaped metal piece with a slit centered on both of the sword's flat slides. The hand guard itself is rounded on it's edges, with three rounded extensions protruding outward/upward from the center piece, creating a crescent moon shape. The sword's blade is 25 inches long, 2 inches wide, and is made from an exquisite metallic silver.
Shikai Transformation- Shinsei will hold his katana out to the side with his right arm, horizontally, with his left foot placed slightly forward and his back straight. Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai will begin to glow yellow, and soon begin to encase itself in a bright light outlining the sword. While in this state, the outline of the sword will begin to morph and take new shape. Once the transformation is complete, the light around Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai cracks and breaks off, revealing the newly formed Shikai underneath.
Shikai Power: Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai has the power to manipulate sunlight in various ways. This is done by Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai absorbing sunlight, infusing it with Shinsei's Reitsu, and turning it into focused energy attacks. This can be done in a multitude of ways; Using direct sunlight, reflected sunlight, focused sunlight, direct moonlight, reflected moonlight, and focused moonlight(Because Moonlight is simply sunlight being reflected off of the moon). Using this power helps Shinsei reduce his Reitsu output by using the sun's energy to accompany his own, allowing him to produce more attacks in different varieties. These energy based attacks can come in the form of solid light constructs or light emissions.
The constructs Shinsei can create don't contain too much detail unless on a smaller scale, like creating a key or a fully formed arrow projectile. If the construct is on a bigger scale, it will usually take the general shape of what Shinsei desires. For instance, Shinsei cannot create a fully functioning safe with tumblers and locks, but can create a construct of a box. Offensive light constructs typically have a yellow hue and a faint glow. Defensive constructs made to contain, encase, or block something retain the yellow hue on the exterior towards the edges and corners, but are only slightly transparent towards the interior. Any construct Shinsei creates will dissolve away once he relinquishes his control over it. The only downside to the constructs is the extent of their durability, which depends on a few things; The amount of reitsu used to create the construct, Shinsei's physical, mental and or emotional state, or the spiritual or physical strength exerted from an object or opponent opposing the construct. Any of these factors can cause Shinsei's constructs to crackle and shatter into pieces.
The light emissions Shinsei can create range from small candle like light to bright flares intense enough to cause temporary blindness. All light emissions come from Shinsei's blade, and cannot be placed elsewhere.
Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai can store up to a full day's worth of sunlight allowing Shinsei to use it freely in situations where no direct sunlight is present, at least until his reitsu is depleted. Shinsei's sheathe can also absorb a full hour's worth of sunlight, allowing Shinsei to fuse it with his reitsu and use it as a last ditch effort.

History:
1891
Shinsei's exemplary performance in the first few years granted him an early graduation. Shinsei graduated from Soul Academy in 1891 and joined the Gotei 5 the same year. Shinsei chose to be a part of the Gotei 5's 4th Division, thinking of it as the best place that he could perform as a Shinigami but without any unwanted attention. Shinsei's time spent in the 4th Division was educational to say the least. While he got to experience what it meant to be a Shinigami, he also learned just how different each Division is from one another. Shinsei loathed one Division in particular, the 5th Division. Full of nothing but egotistical brawlers and savage killers, the 5th Division was the very embodiment of what Shinsei despises most in the world, brutes. The members of the 5th Division reminded Shinsei of his father, which only angered Shinsei whenever he'd see a member of the 5th Division. To help keep himself from engaging any 5th Division members, Shinsei would take on various odd jobs to distract himself. Soon enough, the constant work that Shinsei would receive would tire him out, so instead, Shinsei started accepting less jobs and taking naps every now and then to balance out his routine. This eventually led to Shinsei developing a laid back way of life in Sereitei, and became part of his overall personality. This also, however, held Shinsei back from attaining his true power for quite some time.
1904
The year of 1904 is one of true significance to Shinsei, as all the years after 1891 leading up to this point were for the most part uneventful. Having not yet unlocked the power a Shikai, Shinsei focused his potential on other skills, such as crafting tools for battle or perfecting his use of Kido. During this time, Shinsei had been placed on a mission with two other Shinigami to investigate a Hollow presence in a rural Japanese village. His teammates were a young woman named Ishisuu Fei'Meng, and an older gentleman named Kinje Agowa. Ishisuu was a petite young lady, about Shinsei's age if not younger, with a soft but shy personality. She had fairly tan skin, dark brown hair which she wore in a bun, and dark violet eyes. Kinje was only a few years older than Shinsei and Ishisuu, and had a very self-centered and egotistical personality. He donned faded red hair which he wore in a ponytail, a pale skin tone, and glasses which he wore over his dark grey eyes. Kinje was the only one of the group that had supposedly attained a Shikai, and often bragged about his accomplishments with it. While she humored his tales of self acknowledgement, Ishisuu honestly didn't very much care for Kinje's stories. She would often be too curious about Shinsei, finding him to be interesting. Kinje noticed this, and would become annoyed with Shinsei, believing him not to be deserving of such attention for accomplishing nothing.
The team would stake out the village from a nearby forest at night when the sightings of the Hollow were reported. Two hours into the stake out, the Hollow appeared emerging from the forest just outside the village, large in form, and resembling the figure of a rat. The Hollow's skull mask was closely similar to that of a rodents's skull, eyes glowing yellow with an intent to instill fear. The Hollow was about fifteen feet in height, and thirty feet in length, excluding the tail which added another eighteen feet to the overall length of the creature. Now seeing what they were up against, Shinsei began to propose a plan to capture and execute the Hollow, but Kinje refused to follow the plan of someone beneath him. So instead, Kinje steps out of hiding and confronts the Hollow himself. The Hollow smells Kinje, and hisses at him in distaste. Kinje then promotes himself with a rather flashy bravado, and then offers to defeat the Hollow without the use of his Shikai. The Hollow roars with murderous ferocity, and charges towards Kinje. Kinje then leaps upward, unsheathing his Zanpakuto and slashing the Hollow across the right side of its mask, snickering as he goes. The Hollow cries out in frustration, and whips it's tail at Kinje, forcing him down to the ground. Kinje blocks the attack with his Zanpakuto, landing on his feet, and pushing the tail away from himself. Kinje demands more of a challenge from the Hollow, and with a cold stare, a part of the Hollow's torso begins to morph. A misshapen form protrudes from the Hollow, and takes the form of a smaller version of the Hollow itself, roughly half the size of the original. The newly formed hollow duplicate dashes towards Kinje, catching him by surprise and headbutting him into a tree behind him. Kinje lay against the tree, dazed and confused, as he looks up to see the Hollow duplicate standing upright about to strike him once more. Kinje quakes in fear, just as Shinsei runs by and slashes the beast in its underbelly. The Hollow duplicate cries out in pain and begins chasing after Shinsei, while Ishisuu quickly attends to Kinje. Kinje looks on at Shinsei, filled with hatred, angered that someone like himself was saved by the likes of someone such as Shinsei. Shinsei lures the Hollow duplicate long enough to gains some distance. Once far enough, Shinsei leaps into the air, performing a back flip as he does, and tossing his Zanpakuto downward. The tip of the Zanpakuto's blade pierces the mask of the Hollow duplicate, running straight through and stabbing the ground below. The Hollow duplicate stops in place, and begins to dissolve, leaving Shinsei's Zanpakuto sticking out of the ground as he lands close by. The Hollow lets out a deafening screech, and flees back into the forest from which it came.
Later that night, the team set up a fire near their location, figuring that the Hollow would not return for the rest of the night. Shinsei sits by the fire, coming up with a plan to defeat the Hollow, as Ishisuu and Kinje rest nearby. Shinsei is then joined by Kinje, bandages wrapped around his head from the blow he took earlier. Shinsei questions Kinje's actions from before, stating that they were reckless and could've gotten him killed. Kinje replies to Shinsei with snark remarks as to how he doesn't need to answer to him. Shinsei then asks Kinje why he froze in place and didn't bother to release his Shikai. Kinje, now with a somber expression, looks down at the fire. Kinje explains that his Shikai and adventures were all a lie, in order to impress people, specifically Ishisuu. He had always had feelings for Ishisuu, but didn't feel that he was powerful enough to be worthy of her. So he made up his gaining of Shikai to win her over, but it still had no effect on her, though it did attract the attention of other women. He admitted to being jealous of Shinsei, who didn't even try to attain the attention Ishisuu, but always seemed to have it anyway. It wasn't fair to Kinje, who tried so hard to be the person he thought Ishisuu would want. Shinsei tells Kinje of how Ishisuu doesn't very much care for Kinje's stories or theatrics, that she is simply interested in who someone is on the inside. Taking in Shinsei's words, Kinje comes the conclusion that Shinsei is right. After agreeing to be more helpful in the next attempt to defeat the Hollow, Kinje then heads back to sleep, unaware that Ishisuu had been awake the whole time, and had heard every word of the conversation Kinje had just had with Shinsei.
The next day, Shinsei began to set up his trap for the Hollow, while Kinje and Ishisuu search the forest for any sign of the Hollow's whereabouts. While searching, Ishisuu reveals that she knows the truth behind his behavior, and doesn't hate him for it. And though she does have an interest in Shinsei, its not enough to say she has feelings for him. Relieved at this, Kinje questions Ishisuu's feelings for himself, in which Ishisuu states that Kinje should act as he normally would instead of putting on an act. With this, the two return to Shinsei, and finish prepping for the night ahead of them. As night falls, the team awaits the return of the Hollow, a trap in place for when it arrives. The Hollow comes out from the dark shadows of the forest, sniffing the air for Shinigami scents. As it picks up the scent of the team, it races towards them. Just as planned, the team jumps out from hiding, all splitting up into three directions, surrounding the Hollow. The Hollow then creates three Hollow duplicates to fend off the Shinigami. The duplicates assault the team, whom are each positioned in front of a tree. Once the duplicates are close enough, each of the team pulls on a string leading to a mechanism in the brush of the trees, firing off a small barrage of sharpened branches at the duplicates. The branches all hit their marks, leaving the duplicates pinned to the ground, as the team all destroy the duplicates by stabbing them in the head. The Hollow roars with terror, and begins to flee once again. As planned, each of the team blocks the Hollow's path, causing it to turn in a different direction to run. Once the team has the hollow where they want it, Ishisuu and Kinje use two more tree firing devices nearby to cripple the Hollow's two hind legs. After this, Kinje and Ishisuu plunge their Zanpakuto into the Hollow's front feet, keeping it from moving any further. Fearing for it's life, the Hollow readies its tail to swing at Shinsei, who is running towards the beast with his Zanpakuto drawn. Shinsei then jumps into the air before the Hollow can slam its tail down on him, and exclaims that the "big ones" never learn. Shinsei then throws his Zanpankuto down and stabs the Hollow's tail, holding it in place on the ground. And while directly over top of the Hollow, pulls out a beige clay sphere, the size of a softball. The sphere is covered in binding seals, with a small black cap attached to it. Shinsei pulls the cap off, igniting a small fuse hidden underneath it. As the fuse burns, Shinsei throws the sphere down at the Hollow, his teammates leaping away from the the beast. Just before the sphere touches the Hollow, it explodes and leaves behind a soft, gooey, and beige colored clay substance that covers the Hollow, and hardens around it. The Hollow, unable to escape from the hardened clay, struggles in panic. The group steps in front of the Hollow, Shinsei, having removed his Zanpakuto from the Hollow's tail, plunges it into the Hollow's mask. The Hollow's movements finally cease, as it dissolves into the air, leaving a clay casing behind. As Shinsei sheathes his Zanpakuto and begins to tell the team to prepare to return home, he is struck in the back of his head, and falls to the ground unconscious. The cries of Ishisuu can be heard as Shinsei slips into blackness.
Shinsei's eyes quiver, as they begin to peer open narrowly, only to see nothing. Light begins to form in the distance of what seems to be eternal darkness, a faint light, but enough to draw Shinsei's eyes to it. As he squints, Shinsei begins to hear hushed whispers of a womanly tone coming from the direction of the light. Shinsei questions the unknown voice speaking, asking it to project itself more, so Shinsei may understand what it is trying to tell him. The voice grows slightly louder, as the light in the distance starts to come closer to Shinsei, almost as if it is alive. Shinsei states for the voice to speak louder once more, as his eyes squint even further due to the approaching light, which seems to be getting brighter as it nears him. The voice grows louder and louder, as the light shines with immense intensity. Shinsei closes his eyes, the light becoming too much for them to handle. Shinsei fears for what is approaching. The light cascades over Shinsei, illuminating him completely, as the voice quietly whispers once more. This time Shinsei can hear the voice clearly and finally understands what it was trying to tell him, as he opens his eyes wide, embracing the light until only the light remains.
Beyond the forest in a small, grassy clearing, Kinje carries Ishisuu over his shoulder, her hands bound behind her back with Kido. Ishisuu cries out for help, but Kinje continues on with a content grin on his face, knowing no one can hear Ishisuu's pleas for rescue. Kinje then explains how he is doing what he is doing for Ishisuu, so that she can see him for who he really is now. Kinje also states that with Shinsei is out of the way, they can finally begin a life together, somewhere far from Soul Society where no one can steal Ishisuu's attention away from him. He says how it will be perfect, just the two of them, like he always yearned for. But before Kinje can go on, he and Ishisuu begin to feel a spiritual pressure erupt from the forest behind them, followed by a strong breeze blowing past them. Kinje turns his head just enough to see Shinsei, walking out from the trees with a dour look on his face, declaring that Kinje won't be taking Ishisuu anywhere. Ishisuu's eyes tear up with relief, as Kinje shouts at Shinsei in aggravation, calling Shinsei an unworthy worm compared to himself. Kinje drops Ishisuu onto the ground and unsheathes his Zanpakuto, stating that this time he will cut the light out of Shinsei's very eyes with his own blade. Shinsei unsheathes his Zanpakuto, his expression unchanged, his eyes locked onto Kinje. Kinje runs at Shinsei, swing his sword downward, only to be blocked by Shinsei's blade. Shinsei forces Kinje back, countering his attack, aiming for Kinje's lower torso. Kinje dodges the slash, and rushes Shinsei once more. Ishisuu recovers from the fall, and positions herself upright on her knees and witnesses in awe of the two men clashing blades with one another. The two clash blades once again, holding their stance, and struggling to force one another away. Kinje begins to brag about how he will always be better for Ishisuu than anyone else because he is willing to do whatever it takes to gain her love. With this Kinje grabs hold of Shinsei's sword by the bottom of the blade with his free hand, catching Shinsei by surprise. He then lifts Shinsei's sword, blood dripping down the length of his arm, and slashes Shinsei's shoulder. Shinsei cries out in pain as he stumbles backward to avoid more attacks from Kinje. Kinje laughs at Shinsei, calling him pathetic excuse for a warrior, and that all he is good for is setting rat traps. As blood drips from his newly carved wound, Shinsei looks down at the ground, unmoved by Kinje's words. Kinje continues with his rant, and the sun begins to rise above the tree line behind him. Seeing the sunlight bath the grass below him, Shinsei claims that Kinje is right, that Shinsei is good at setting traps, and that Kinje just fell into one of them. Kinje snarls in dismay, as he demands that Shinsei explain himself at once, pointing his sword at him. Shinsei looks up, and with a glare in his eyes, states that he'll just show Kinje instead. Shinsei then stands upright, and holds his Zanpakuto outward to his right, and begins to speak. "Radiate..." Shinsei says, as his Zanpakuto begins to glow a bright yellow, the light encasing the sword completely. The sword morphs, and takes the shape of an ancient Japanese Regalia Sword, similar to the one of the three Treasures of Japanese legend. After the shape is taken, the light covering the sword starts to crackle and break, and completely shatters. Left behind is an Ancient styled Kusanagi, the handle made of a shimmering golden metal, and the blade of a fine polished silver that beams within the sunlight. Shinsei lowers his newly unsealed Zanpakuto, as he finishes, "...Ni~Tsu Ningyotsukai!" Kinje and Ishisuu look on in amazement of Shinsei's new found power, Ishisuu mesmerized by the fine craft, while Kinje is in utter distress. Kinje begins to shout crossly, stating that the situation is absurd, that he deserves to have a Shikai, not a wretched worm like Shinsei. Shinsei then quickly points his sword at Kinje, launching a beam of light in the shape of his sword's blade at him. Kinje stops speaking abruptly, as the beam of light cuts through his left shoulder, leaving him in a motionless state. His eyes filled with terror, Kinje looks on at Shinsei, whose eyes are are fixated on him with grim intent. The blade of light dissipates, as Shinsei lowers his sword once again, silent yet provoking. Kinje thrashes out in rage, charging at Shinsei with murder in his eyes, and fire in his soul. Kinje clashes blades with Shinsei, halting to a power struggle once more, as he yells about his hatred towards Shinsei and all that he is. Shinsei takes this opportunity, and reflects sunlight off of his sword onto Kinje's glasses. Shinsei focuses his powers on the right lens of Kinje's glasses, creating a light construct on the inner side, and extending it into a small spike. This cuts off Kinje's taunts, as the spike of light pierces Kinje's eye, exiting through the back of his skull. Time seems slower to Shinsei, as he watches the silhouette of Kinje's body fall backwards, the sun peering over him. Kinje's body lands on the ground, lifeless and silenced. Shinsei looks down on Kinje's body with remorse, and shifts his attention to Ishisuu, whose hands have been freed due to Kinje's incapacitated state. Shinsei helps Ishisuu up, as she wraps her arms around him and thanks him for saving her. Shinsei welcomes her, and suggest that the two report back to Sereitei at once. The two leave the clearing, leaving Kinje, his right hand struggling to make a fist as it rips blades of grass from the ground.
After the situation with Kinje, a retrieval team was sent to apprehend Kinje for attempted murder and kidnapping. However, when the team arrived Kinje was nowhere to be found, the grass on the ground where his body laid was still pressed down.
1950
Much time has passed since Shinsei gained his Shikai, and he has grown quite skilled with with his new power, but his progression within the Gotei 5 has remain unchanged. Continuing down his path of isolation, Shinsei has taken up more odd jobs around Sereitei, trying to remain far from the action. Some of Shinsei's tasks require him to make deliveries into Rukongai, in which he takes the time to visit his former employer and friend, Mr. Kawanagi. One day Shinsei was to make a delivery to a local blacksmith in West Rukongai, and decided to drop by the market in hopes of seeing Mr. Kawanagi. Shinsei arrives at the market, and see's Mr. Kawanagi giving a few young children some small fruits as a kind gesture. Shinsei walks up Mr. Kawanagi, complimenting his kindness to children throughout the time he's known him. Mr. Kawanagi greets Shinsei and the two talk for a while, then Mr. Kawanagi invites Shinsei to join him for dinner later that evening. As the sun sets, Mr. Kawanagi and Shinsei dine on an old meal that Mr. Kawanagi and Shinsei would prepare in Shinsei's youth. As the two eat, they share stories of the past, and news of the present. As the conversation dies down, Mr. Kawanagi grows more and more grey in his face, his expression rather grave, a look that is rare when it comes to the elder. Shinsei questions Mr. Kawanagi, worried about what might be troubling him. Mr. Kawanagi takes a deep breathe, and looks up at Shinsei, explaining that he had found Shinsei's father. Shocked, Shinsei becomes slightly short of breathe, overwhelmed with fear and anger all at once. Shinsei keeps himself restrained, gripping the fabric of his hakama tightly. Shinsei couldn't believe what he was hearing, the very thought almost seemed like fantasy to him after so long. Shinsei's father was alive? And Mr. Kawanagi knew where he was? Shinsei's mind raced, his teeth grinding, and a cold chill running up his spine. In the midst of all this, Shinsei started to hear a voice calling out to him, growing louder as the madness in his thoughts began to fade. Shinsei finally snapped out of it as Mr. Kawanagi calls out at him. Shinsei apologizes for not paying attention, but Mr. Kawanagi states that he should be the one apologizing, that maybe this wasn't the best time to tell Shinsei. Shinsei argues that the timing was fine, that any later and the opportunity to find his father could've been missed otherwise. The two continue to go over the possibilities of what might happen if Shinsei finds his father, and Mr. Kawanagi tells Shinsei where he can find his father, but urges him to give it some thought before searching for him. Shinsei takes Mr. Kawanagi's advice with a grain of salt, and heads home after thanking the elder for the dinner and hospitality, as well as the news.
That night, Shinsei couldn't sleep for the first time in a long time, not since what had happened with Kinje Agowa so long ago. Shinsei wondered what had become of his father since he was young. Did he have another family? Was he still a drunk? Did he ever regret what he did to Shinsei's mother? With that thought, memories of the night Shinsei's mother was murdered flash into Shinsei's mind, causing him to toss and turn in bed. The last image Shinsei sees is of his father, blaming him for his mother's death. Shinsei sits up suddenly in a cold sweat, his heart beating rapidly, and his breathe running short once more. After regaining his composure, Shinsei thinks to himself that no matter how dark and twisted the memories of that night may be, they don't compare to the actual night itself. Shinsei lays back down, hands behind his head, eyes trained on the ceiling. Dwelling on the thought of seeing his father after all this time, Shinsei wonders if he'll be able to face him, if he'll be able to confront the one man that inspired Shinsei's hatred towards brutes and savages alike. Could he do it? And even if he could, how would he handle it? Shinsei thought about what he would do if he finally saw his father again for quite some time, and never really settled on one outcome. He wanted to hurt his father, make him apologize to Shinsei for taking the life of someone he loved more than anything, his only mother. But he also wanted to know why he did it, and why he blamed Shinsei for everything. These continued to flood Shinsei's mind that night, at least until he finally fell asleep.
Several days had passed since Shinsei learned of his fathers whereabouts from Mr. Kawanagi, and though Shinsei wanted to confront his father after so many decades, he just couldn't bring himself to do so. Shinsei was eating and sleeping less lately, becoming more sluggish than usual. One day finally during his lunch in the 6th Division's mess hall, his non-stop whirlwind of thoughts pushed Shinsei to the brink, and Shinsei abruptly ran out of the mess hall. Shinsei ran through the Sereitei as fast as he could. The sun began to set as Shinsei made his was through West Rukongai, approaching the outskirts of Soul Society. Deciding that he wasn't fast enough, Shinsei jumped onto a rooftop nearby and used his flash step to travel faster across rooftops. As Shinsei tired from traveling so far so quickly, he stopped on a roof near his destination, looking over at Sereitei. He could turn back if he wanted to, there was still a chance, he didn't have to go through with this. Shinsei ground his teeth, and headed even further until he reach the last rooftop of the block. Panting, Shinsei looks down at the ground below, and what he sees surprises him. Shinsei looks on at the sight of a graveyard, the light of the sun casting over the tombstones as it sets, stretching their shadows as if the souls of those who had passed were awaiting Shinsei's arrival. Nervous, Shinsei jumps down, and heads towards the grim looking sight. He is then greeted by a man, who is revealed to be the one in charge of the graveyard. Shinsei asks him if his father might be buried somewhere in the graveyard, and gives the man his father's name. The man thinks for a minute, and says that he does recall the name. He states that since the site had ran out of plots for graves to be placed, there had been a new site commissioned to make more. The last plot taken up was at the far end of the site, in front of an old and withered tree. Shinsei had found the grave, the tree behind it was indeed old, but still had leaves growing from it with rich, green color. Shinsei then looked down, stepping aside so that his shadow would not cover the tombstone. There in traditional japanese writing was his fathers name; Madarame, Uusaka. Shinsei's heart had dropped, as the space around him grew silent, the only sound coming from leaves brushing against the ground as they blew past him. Apparently Uusaka had died due to alcohol poisoning. After so many years of slamming down the bottle to help himself, Uusaka had ended up killing himself with it instead. He passed away in 1889 while Shinsei was enrolled in the Soul Academy. Shinsei had, of course, considered this as a possibility, but never thought it to be a reality. Shinsei could only stare down at the tombstone, an absence of emotion on his face. Shinsei always wondered what this day would feel like, what it would come to, and he had finally gotten his answer. Shinsei can't remember much about his father, other than the drunken rage he was usually in. But he does remember one time as a child, one good memory of his father.
Shinsei thinks back to a day, when his father was sound of mind, and had shared a moment with him that he hardly thought of until this day. It was a memory of when Shinsei and his father were sitting on a hill, watching the sun set. Uusaka had told Shinsei about how he and Shinsei's mother would come to that very same hill when they were younger, before Shinsei was born. Uusaka would go on and on about their times together, how they fell in love and gotten married. Shinsei then exclaimed how he wanted to be just as strong as Uusaka was when he grew up. Surprised at Shinsei's statement, Uusaka looked at Shinsei with a smile and placed his hand on his head. Uusaka then told Shinsei that while he appreciated the thought, he should aspire to be as strong as his mother, because she was stronger than Uusaka was. Uusaka explained that while he was physically strong, Shinsei's mother was stronger in spirit, and could bare more than he could. He states that she was strong because she was forgiving, something that Uusaka found hard to be at the time. Thats why she was stronger than he was, and thats why Shinsei should want to be more like her, and protect her no matter what. With that said, Shinsei nodded his head and smiled, as the two watch the sunset in the distance.
Remembering that one moment made things clearer to Shinsei, helping him understand his relationship with his parents better. He now understands why his father ran away like he did, and why his mother was so calm and gentle in nature even as she laid dying on the floor. Shinsei now understood why his mother put up with his father as he was, because she knew that he was only this way because he worked so hard keep his family healthy and happy. She forgave him even in death, because she knew who he was deep down, and that he didn't mean to hurt her. Shinsei also knows now that his father didn't leave that day because he didn't want to get caught, he left because he couldn't believe what he had just done, he was ashamed, not afraid. That day had caused him to look to booze, not just to numb the pain of regret and loss, but to eventually take his life as it had caused him to take the life of the one he loved. In the end, Shinsei's mother and father still loved each other. Shinsei realized that his father was right, that he should be more like his mother, be more forgiving. And with that, Shinsei places his hand on his father's tombstone, and forgives him. Shinsei then turns around and walks away from the grave, not looking back.
1985
Shinsei hardly enjoyed working with others in the Gotei 5, gravitating towards jobs and tasks that would require him to work alone. However, these kinds of duties were not always within Shinsei's favor, and he would have to work with a partner or team every now and then. One such day in the spring of 1985, Shinsei was tasked to patrol the southern part of Osaka, Japan with another Shinigami by the name of Turen Shurii'Uuga. Turen was Shinsei's opposite in almost every way, from personality to looks. Turen was an energetic teenager, tan in skin tone, standing at 5'5". He weighed 135 lbs, and had a short, orange mohawk atop his head with the sides of his head shaven. Turen's attire consisted of the standard Shinigami garbs, minus the sleeves, which he had torn off just above his elbows. One other addition to Turen's outfit is his sunglasses, which have dark lenses and a neon purple frame. Turen always wore his sunglasses, so Shinsei never really got to see what Turen's eyes actually look like. While patrolling Kyoto, Turen and Shinsei would often disagree about how to go about the patrol. Shinsei preferred to remain in soul form and patrol across the rooftops above, while Turen would rather use his Gigai to patrol the streets and take in the environment. Turen, of course, had forced Shinsei to use his Gigai to patrol after Turen entered his own and headed down into the streets below through an alley. Shinsei, as dutiful as he was, couldn't let Turen out of his sights knowing how troublesome he could be. So Shinsei entered his Gigai, and followed Turen, as he walk down a busy market place. As they survey the area, Shinsei couldn't help but notice Turen's choice in style for his Gigai. It donned fitted jeans with rips and holes in them, a black leather vest with small silver spikes upon the shoulders covering a white t-shirt with the decal of some band that Shinsei was unfamiliar with, and white sneakers with neon green laces. In addition, he had a variety of colorful and odd looking bracelets on his left wrist, and a black band with small silver spikes on his right wrist.
As they continued on with their patrol, Shinsei quickly noticed that Turen was doing less patrolling and more window shopping, looking into stores and eyeing down skateboards, drinks, and clothing. Shinsei tried to steer Turen's attention back to the task at hand but Turen disregarded Shinsei, saying that he should loosen up and have some fun. Shinsei then questions Turen's fascination with these things, leading Turen to exclaim his love for the world of the living and all the wonderful things it contains, regardless of how vastly different they may be compared to Soul Society. Turen speaks of his memories when he was alive as a human, and how he had the time of his life as a teenager before he died some years later. As Shinsei begins to be taken in by Turen's story, Turen gasps in excitement and runs over to a building at the end of the street. Shinsei follows Turen, catching up rather slowly, and finds Turen standing in front of a used car lot. Shinsei questions Turen's interest in the lot, looking at the multiple used cars with confusion. Turen explains that he always enjoyed riding in fast cars when he was alive, often going on joyrides with his older brother who was an underground street racer. Turen then began to browse through several cars, eventually setting his eyes upon one car in particular, a black 1985 Honda Civic CRX Si Convertible. Turen's eyes glistened as he gazed at the car, Shinsei quickly losing interest behind him. Shinsei recommends that the two carry on with their patrol, and with a sly grin, Turen tells Shinsei to head on without him and that he'll catch up in a bit. Shinsei didn't see the harm in leaving Turen alone for a little bit, so he went on without him, leaving Turen to his plot. Turen then uses a Gikon to leave his Gigai, and sneak into the car lot building unnoticed. Once inside, Turen searches for the keys to the cars outside, finding them in a lock box in a desk. Turen quickly finds the key to the Honda Civic, and makes his way back to the lot, entering his Gigai and spitting up the Gikon. Turen then holds out the keys he had taken and gets into the car while no one is looking. Once in, Turen turns on the car, and speeds off of the lot, the lot manager bursting out of the lot building in a panic.
Shinsei makes his way down the next street down from the used car lot, awaiting Turen to catch up with him. As Shinsei begins to enjoy the peaceful walk he is having, he hears his name being called out from behind him in the distance, and its getting closer. Shinsei turns around to see a black car racing down the street with Turen in the driver's seat. A nervous and shocked expression falls over Shinsei's face as Turen hits the breaks on the car, leaving skids marks on the street as he slides closer to Shinsei. Seeing the car approaching him at a fast velocity, Shinsei cries out in fright, then braces himself for impact. The car stops just next to the curb where Shinsei is standing by, relieving him instantly. Turen yells for Shinsei to get in the car, while Shinsei demands to know why Turen has the car and why he has to get in it. Turen then peers into the rear view mirror and points out the lot manager dashing down the street towards them. Shinsei quickly enters the car, and Turen hits the gas, peeling out from the curb and leaving the lot manager in a cloud of exhaust fumes. Looking back at the man they had left in the dust with a worried expression, Shinsei quickly turns to Turen and yells at him for stealing the car and almost hitting him with it. Turen replies, stating that he was only borrowing the car, and that he'd bring it back once their patrol was over. Still annoyed with Turen, Shinsei exhales and turns to look out of his window. Turen then follows up with his statement by asking Shinsei if he'd like to learn how to drive. Now curious, Shinsei turns back to Turen, questioning how he could do so. Turen explains that all Shinsei has to do is listen carefully and watch what he does, motion for motion. But before Shinsei can get another word in, Turen speeds up and enters a lane to merge with the nearby highway. Turen zips past other cars with ease, and with an overjoyed grin on his face, while Shinsei holds on tight to his seat, yelling the rest of the way.
After their long sprint through the city, Turen and Shinsei find themselves a spot in a warehouse shipping yard just off the bank of the Osaka River that runs through the city. The two stand outside of the stolen car, looking on at the river as it flows uninterrupted. They exchange small talk, though slightly limited, as both refrain from speaking about certain aspects of their lives. And just as Shinsei and Turen begin to reach a bonding point, they are stopped by a dark presence. The two Shinigami can feel the reitsu of a hollow nearby, but are having trouble pinpointing its exact location. As it grows closer, Shinsei finally figures out where the hollow is, and alerts Turen towards the river. Suddenly, a large form burst out from the water, and lands several feet in front of them. It is indeed a 25' hollow, one with the body of a toad, its head covered with a mask that resembles a horned toad's skull. Its skin is an olive green with dark violet spots of various sizes and shapes covering its back. The two brace themselves, as the hollow lets out a stomach curling roar. The hollow then opens its mouth and whips its dark blue tongue at the Shinigami, breaking the ground where they stood after dodging the attack. The two decide to split up. The hollow looks at both Shinigami, but sets his gaze on Turen, and swings its tongue rapidly at him. Turen continues to dodge the hollow's attacks, but the hollow is too fast and finally grabs a hold of Turen's arm with it's tongue. In a panic, Turen jabs his sword into the pavement, holding himself back from being pulled into the hollow's mouth. As the hollow struggles with Turen in a tug of war manner, the conflict quickly ends as the hollow's tongue is cut clean in half, causing it to roar in intense agony. The part of the tongue attached to Turen dissolves as Shinsei lands nearby in his soul form, his blade lined with the blood of the hollow. Shinsei stands and looks on at the hollow with a stern expression, unsettling the hollow and forcing it to leap over the Shinigami and the car, fleeing for its life. Shinsei complains that the hollow is too fast, and that they need something to help them catch up to it before they lose it. Turen ponders the thought, and tells Shinsei that its time for him to show what he's learned.
The hollow hops through the streets of Osaka at great distances, landing on cars and breaking through street lights. Believing it has escaped death, the hollow slows down, only to hear the roar of a car heading in its direction from behind. The hollow looks behind itself to see the same car from before heading straight for it, Shinsei back in his Gigai driving with a lead foot, and Turen donning the same joyful grin from earlier. The hollow screeches and quivers in fear, and speeds up once more. Turen tells Shinsei to keep focused on the road, just as he would focus on his surroundings in a real battle. Shinsei takes to this swiftly, and swerves past oncoming cars and pedestrians as he races towards the hollow. Shinsei questions how they will handle the hollow once they catch up, since taking it down while driving wont be easy. Turen then pulls out a Gikon and tells Shinsei to open the convertible drop top and follow his lead. Shinsei observes Turen and understands his plan, dropping the convertible top and pulling out his own Gikon. The car approaches the hollow rapidly, shaking from the small tremors of the hollow's leaps as it lands on the pavement. Close enough, Shinsei and Turen both swallow their Gikon, their soul selves emerging from their Gigai upward and just far enough to be over top of the hollow. Shinsei's Gikon, Ako, realizes he is driving the car, and freaks out since he too doesn't know how to drive and swerves to a stop in the middle of the street. Shinsei and Turen draw their blades, and slash downward at the hollow's mask. The hollow screeches and falls to the street below, the two Shinigami landing on their feet in front of it. The two look back at the hollow to see it groaning in pain, with two slash marks across it's mask in the shape of an X. The hollow grows still and begins to dissolve, revealing a rather large crack in the pavement where it lay dying. The hollow disappears completely, and the Shinigami sheathe their blades. Turen compliments Shinsei on his driving earlier, stating how fast of a learner Shinsei is. Shinsei returns the favor by telling Turen how impressed he was by his plan to take down the hollow without losing their speed. Turen thanks Shinsei as he holds out his fist. Shinsei looks in confusion at first, but quickly realizes what Turen is doing and smiles, giving him a fist bump in good spirits. The two then hear a shout in the distance, and look down the street, their smiles soon replaced with somber expressions. Shinsei and Turen look on at the car, with Ako and Turen's Gigai sitting inside, their hair crudely distraught, and their faces covered in utter disbelief of what just happened as citizens stare at them.
1991
One Spring day in Karakura, everything was calm and peaceful on the surface, as if all hollows and malevolent beings had decided to take a day off. But this was only on the surface, as deep below in the sewers under town, a hollow is on the run from a squad of Shinigami. The squad is made up of four Shinigami, Shinsei included, and are gaining on the hollow which closely resembles an ape in physicality, its mask in the shape of an Easter Island Statue Head. Shinsei uses his Shikai to light the way down the sewer line, keeping the hollow in sights. Two of the other Shinigami use Hado #1, Sho, to knock the hollow off of his footing and into the sewer water. The last of the Shinigami jumps up and plunges his sword deep into the hollow's mask, silencing the beast for good. As the hollow dissolves, the Shinigami that dealt the final blow congratulates the squad for a job well done. The squad then begins their ascension to the surface of Karakura, heading up through multiple levels underground until they exit the sewers and enter a sub level below the streets. Once there, Shinsei hears a faint sound in the distance, and his curiosity pulls at him. He tells the squad that he'll catch up in a bit, saying that he wants to set some spiritual traps for any hollows that come through the area. The squad agrees to Shinsei's idea and decides to do the same in different areas around Karakura. Once the squad splits up, Shinsei heads in the direction of the sound. As he closes in on the sounds, he can see an odd lighting at the end of a hall, made up of blue and violet hues. Shinsei sees an opening at the end of the hall where the light and sounds are coming from, and approaches it with caution, his hand on the handle of his sheathed sword. He finally sees whats inside, and though not threatening, Shinsei still takes the time to investigate. Shinei finds a small room, lit by a 2' long blacklight nailed against the far wall. In the room there are three human adults, no older than 25, all passed out in different areas. The first of the humans is a male, sitting on the floor against the left wall, his head hanging down. The second human is a female, sitting comfortably in a bean bag chair in the far left corner of the room. The last human is male, laid out on a small mattress in the far right corner of the room. To a Shinigami, a hollow could've been a viable explanation for these humans' conditions, but Shinsei knew better as he inspected the room further. He could see cigarette buds in several areas of the floor, along with numerous alcoholic beverages and energy drinks, and an ash tray sitting on a small end table on the right side of the room with a few smoked joints of marijuana in it. But out of everything that Shinsei saw, one item caught his eye, a boom box on the end table. The boom box was projecting the sounds that Shinsei had heard, and were now clearer than before. The sounds had rhythm, melody, a slow and hypnotizing tune. As Shinsei looked closer at the boom box, he could see a small cassette tape inside, with a piece of masking tape on it. The tape had "Trance Mix" written on it with black marker. Shinsei determined that these melodic sounds had to be a form of music in the Material World, and actually began to feel quite soothed and relaxed by it. Seeing that he had some time to kill, Shinsei sat against the left wall of the hallway, and closed his eyes as he let the music envelope his mind. In that moment, Shinsei smiled, and was glad to have stumbled across these humans.
2013
Not many extraordinary things happened to Shinsei, at least none that he would classify as extraordinary, not since he first released his Shikai. One particular night, however, Shinsei experienced something that made him appreciate humans and the world of the living more. Shinsei and his two old friends, Turen Shurii'Uuga and Ishisuu Fei'Meng, were patrolling one summer night in Tokyo, Japan. Turen and Ishisuu had become acquainted with one another sometime before then, and made things somewhat lively for a dull night of patrolling.
Hours had passed and nothing had seemed out of place. Now 2:00 a.m., the team decided to do one more round in a different section of Tokyo, using the rooftops to quicken their patrol. A half hour into their last round, the team thought it was about time to pack it in, and just as they were about to return to Soul Society, Shinsei noticed a glow in the distance behind some buildings. Turen disregarded the glow, saying that it was probably an airport or something. But Shinsei had a familiar feeling about the glow. So Shinsei lept off of the rooftop he was standing on and headed towards the glow. Ishisuu followed him straight away, Turen following soon after. As Shinsei neared the glow, it grew brighter, pulsating, and was accompanied by heavy bass which only became louder as the team got closer. Once close enough, the team could hear what sounded like music, which resulted in Ishisuu questioning what kind of music it was. This was confirmed by Turen as he referred to it as "Electronic Dance Music". The team landed on the rooftop of an office building, and walked over to the far end. As they reached the other side of the rooftop, the three were in awe of what they saw. In the distance was a massive crowd of humans, dancing and cheering in front of a stage. On the stage was a man, wearing headphones and operating a mechanical device in front of him. All around the crowd and stage were large speakers, producing the music that was being played. There were lights of different colors and sizes all around the area, some very bright, some pulsating, and some projecting lasers above the crowd. The music was loud, fast paced and made the crowd jump with excitement. The man on stage shouted into a microphone, asking if the crowd was ready, but Ishisuu questioned what that meant. Turen replied that the man was referring to the "drop". And just after Turen spoke, the music heightened up, and went silent for half a second. After that half second, the music became louder and much more energetic, and more lights began flashing along with the music. The crowd went wild and cheered with their hands in the air. The team was taken away by what they were seeing, Ishisuu stating that it was beautiful seeing all of the lights and the colors move in such ways. Shinsei talked about how much fun the crowd must have been having, cheering and dancing to the beat. But Turen spoke of how the person having the most fun was the man on the stage, because he was the DJ who was making the music that the crowd loved hearing. Turen explained that the DJ was the reason that all of those people were all together in the first place, making them happy with something he created. Ishisuu sat down on the edge of the rooftop, as the three looked on, asking what this amazing event was called. Turen answered her with a calm and positive tone, "A Rave", and the three Shinigami smiled as they watched the rest of the performance before heading back home.
1868
Shinsei's story begins in Soul Society with a newly wed couple, Uusaka Madarame and Isune Madarame, whom had just found out that Isune was expecting a child. While excited at first, Uusaka had his worries about starting a family when the couple had struggled to take care of themselves. Though he kept this to himself, because he loved his wife, and did not wish to trouble her during her pregnancy. Nine months had passed and on August 3rd, 1868, Shinsei Madarame was born. The Madarame family lived in a small house in the far side of Rukongai's West District. Uusaka worked as a miner, working long hours, while Isune stayed home and took care of Shinsei.
Isune was smaller than Uusaka, with a slendor body and long dark brown hair that draped down her back. Her eyes were dark brown like Uusaka's, but had a glimmer to them, one that made them inviting to look into. Isune had always treated Shinsei as the apple of her eye, cherishing every moment they spent with each other. She would always play games with, and encouraged him to learn as much as he could from Usaka and herself. Shinsei often looked at Isune as if she had a glow about her, her embrace made him feel safe. Isune always cooked for her family, but would sometimes make a healthy stew that both Shinsei and Usaka detested for its bitter taste, but still ate anyway. As a mother, Isune constantly worried Shinsei's well being, and would try to teach him how to be at least somewhat self sufficient even though he was still young. But even with all of her concern, she somehow knew that Shinsei would be alright. She could just feel it, just by seeing him smile and being care free, that he would be okay even if things went downhill. Shinsei always had that effect on others, to make a shift in their emotional state to almost match his, it was intriguing really. Their favorite activity was to visit the local markets in West Rukongai, taking in all of the sights and sounds of the busy streets, Shinsei sometimes getting carried away and snagging food or a toy from a stand without his mother paying for it. Their bond was profound, and unbreakable.
Uusaka was a larger, fit man with tan skin and dirty blonde hair that was cut very short in a side swept style, and dark brown eyes. Uusaka was another case. One that helped shape Shinsei into who he is today. In his early years as a parent, Uusaka was a good man with a decent job, and didn't ask for much in return for all of his hard work. His time spent with his son was short most times due to his work schedule but whenever he was with Shinsei, it was all laughs and smiles. Uusaka would often tell Shinsei of his 'adventures' in the coal mines where he worked. Making himself sound like a hero, defeating all sorts of monsters and claiming many rich and rare minerals deep within the mines. But as time went on, Uusaka began working longer hours, and saw his family less than what he'd wanted to. And over time, it became clear that he was slowly losing touch with his wife and son. His fun talks with Shinsei now felt more like life advise, some that felt more like it was for himself than for his son. To help ease the sadness that was overcoming him, Uusaka took to drinking, hoping a buzz would help him feel better about his situation. But it only turned into fuel for the fire, as a constant reminder lingered in his mind, telling him that he wasn't good enough for his family. With this Uusaka would get angrier at himself, and hit the bottle even harder, soon leading to him coming home late at night in a drunken state, spouting nonsense and sometimes inappropriate things to Isune. As Isune grew less and less fond of her husband, Uusaka felt like he was being treated as second best to a child, his own son. This turned into a sort of resentment, not to his own family, but to himself, even if he made it feel the other way around sometimes. After a while, Uusaka couldn't shake the feeling of his family's distaste for his behavior, and grew fed up with it. Taking to drinking at home now, Isune and Shinsei found it harder to recognize Uusaka as he was when Shinsei was only a few years old. His wonderful tales of the mines now replaced with drunken, rage filled arguments with Isune that would often leave Shinsei scared and crying to himself in his room as he overheard them
1878
One day, Uusaka had come home drunk, and demanded that he and Isune speak immediately. Isune, who had been washing the dishes with Shinsei, refused to obey Uusaka's demands. Furious, Uusaka grabbed Isune by her hair with his hand and began to pull her towards their bedroom, Isune desperately trying to break hold of his grasp. Worried for his mother's life, Shinsei grabs a knife from the counter and charges at Uusaka with it, his arms quivering and the point of the blade dashing forward. Shinsei plunges the knife into the back of Uusaka's thigh, causing Uusaka to halt in pain. Uusaka looks back at Shinsei, calls him a "little bastard", and back hands Shinsei in the face. Shinsei is knocked down hard, dazed and struggling to get back up. Seeing this, Isune loses it, and begins to claw at Uusaka's face, scratching him across his cheek and leaving four long scars on his face. Infuriated, Uusaka takes Isune's head, and in and effort to knock her out, slams her head into the threshold of the bedroom doorway. In that moment, Shinsei's eyes widen, as he witnesses his mother's head bounce off of the threshold, and her body collapse onto the floor. Realizing what he had just done, Uusaka became paralyzed in fright, looking over at Shinsei in anger and blaming him for all that had happened. Uusaka grabs hold of the knife in his leg, and yanks it out while grinding his teeth in pain. Uusaka then stumbles out of the house as fast as he can, leaving Shinsei alone with his mother. Shinsei watches as his father departs, and once he is gone, runs over to his mother as she lay on her back, blood trickling from her head. Shinsei looks on in horror, so much blood was leaking out, it was difficult to know exactly where Isune's skull was fractured, or if there were multiple fractures. As Shinsei trembles and sobs, Isune slowly looks over at him, her eyes filled with sincerity and sorrow. Isune begins to raise her arm, her body weakened from the blow to her head, shaking with every motion. Shinsei grabs hold of her hand to help her, and she places her hand on his cheek. Tears begin to flood Shinsei's eyes, as Isune quietly and faintly utters the words "You will always be the light in my life". With those last words, Isune takes her last breath, and her hand falls from Shinsei's cheek, hitting the floor with such a thud, the sound resonates within Shinsei's young mind. A sound that Shinsei will never forget.
1885
After the death of his mother and the disappearance of his father, Shinsei is orphaned, and as he grows up, learns to be more self sufficient. By his teen years, Shinsei had taken up part time job after part time job to help keep a steady income. as well as pick up some new skills. Secretly, Shinsei had hoped that in his endeavors, he would learn of his father's whereabouts. Shinsei ended up working for an old man named Mr. Kawanagi, a fresh fruit vendor in the West District markets. Mr. Kawanagi was a kind old man, one who had seen a good amount of Sereitei's history. He had lengthy grey hair, brushed back to look slick and smooth, his skin retaining a slight tan from being in the sun for many hours a day, and his eyes a cool grey color. Shinsei remained under Mr. Kawanagi's employment for quit some time, and became good friends with him. Mr. Kawanagi offered Shinsei a place in his home, and made meals for himself and Shinsei. Soon enough, Mr. Kawanagi became a sort of father figure to Shinsei, and taught him much about Soul Society and its history. As time went on, Mr. Kawanagi encouraged Shinsei to apply for the Soul Academy. Mr. Kawanagi thought that Shinsei would get no where being a fruit vendor, and that he could put his skills and knowledge to better use. So after dwelling on the thought for months, Shinsei finally decided to apply for the entrance exam to gain admission into Soul Academy. On his first try, Shinsei's scores were superb, and was placed in the number one class of new students.

Roleplay Sample: The small soul boy had been running from the monster that had been chasing him for what seemed like hours, even though it had only been minutes. Maybe he was so tired from running, that his mind was fuzzy and losing track of time as a result. But the boy had to keep running, he had to get away. He had found an abandoned warehouse to hide, opening on of the two main doors and shutting it with haste. The boy had made it a good distance from the door before he could hear it bust open with great force, followed by a ghastly roar. The haunting noise struck immense fear into the boy, so much that his legs began to buckle as he slowly backed up against a wall. The warehouse was dark, the only light peering through the high windows along the sides of the building. The boy stood, paralyzed in place by his own thoughts of what was to come after the monster had found him. Would it eat him? Would it simply tear him apart? Or would it torture him for as long as it could? Why couldn't anyone hear or see him or the monster? Why wouldn't anyone save him? Why was this all happening?
The boy stared into the darkness around him, the only light being a rectangular patch of sunlight from the window above him, placed a few feet from where he stood. Unable to move, the boy remained still, and could finally hear the subtle growl of the monster that had been hunting him down. The watched in horror, as a pair of glowing red eyes could be seen piercing through the darkness like headlights on a car. The boy knew the monster had found him, no matter how dark the warehouse was, no matter where he ran or hid, the monster would find him. The looked down and closed his eyes, too afraid to face the beast head on. The monster began to speak in low and menacing voice.
"Finally given up on running, eh?" The monster said.
The boy opened his eyes wide, tears falling, his heart stopping at the sudden surprise of what he had just heard. The monster had spoken, and was talking to the boy. The boy looked up to see two frightening eyes staring back at him. They were fixated on him with such murderous intent, not batting for a second.
"Heh heh heh. You shouldn't have ran away from me, ya know..." The monster spoke once more, as he begin to draw closer through the darkness. The boy grew even more frightened as the monster began to enter the light from the window. He could see the head of the beast appear first, it had no visible flesh, only a skull. The resembled that of a lizard, with a singular purple stripe running down the top of it's head to the bridge of it's nose. The body was a rather muscular, male humanly shaped one, that stood 7'5" tall with a large reptilian tail that ran 8' long. The monster's skin was a very dark cyan color, and looked rough to the touch. The monster spoke one last time as it's tail waved in the air.
"...it only made me work up an appetite."
The words sent a chill up the boy's spine as he shook in place, sobbing miserably, wishing he wasn't where he was at the moment. But just as the monster was about to lunge at the boy, beams of light shot down from the window above, creating a long rectangular box of light stretching from the window to the floor where the monster stood. The boy was shocked by what he just witnessed, its as if the heavens were sparing his life from the terrible beast that had been terrorizing him.
"What?! What is this?! Why can't I get out of here?!" The monster shouted as he banged against the hard surface of the box. He looked up at the window where the beams came from, and to his surprise, he saw a man outside of the window. The man was dressed it a black kimono, with a white obi sash around his waist. He had beige colored skin, dirty blonde hair, and a thin beard. The man was standing on what seemed to be thin air, just outside of the window, and had what looked like a traditional Japanese regalia sword drawn. The tip of the sword's blade was pressed against the glass of the window, a small flicker of light faintly visible between the two. The man spoke loudly enough for the monster and the boy to hear.
"The technique you're seeing now is called "Tsuro", and its also the last thing you're ever going to see, hollow."
The hollow quickly realizes what the man means, and yells in desperation. The man places the palm of his hand against the bottom of the sword's handle, causing to the light between the window and the tip of the blade to flicker brighter, as a swarm of arrows made from light shoot out from the inside of the window and down towards the trapped hollow. The arrows pulverize the hollow with such force that they pierce clear through his body and hit ground beneath him, creating an uproar of dust inside the box of light. Once the onslaught of arrows ceases, the box of light dissipates and the dust settles. The hollow is gone, and the ground is marked with carvings from the arrows. The boy looks at the ground where the hollow stood, astounded by what he had seen. He quickly snaps out of it and heads fro the entrance he first used to enter the warehouse. Once outside, the boy looks around for the person that saved him, eventually bumping into the man in black. He looks up at the man, the sun blocking out his facial features. The boy works up the courage to say something, anything to the man that saved his life.
"Th-Thank you Mi-Mister..." The boy says as he struggles to speak, still shaken up by the events from earlier. The man crouches down to the boys level, looking him in the eyes, his face finally clear to the boy. The man speaks, in a mild mannered tone, and with a heart warming smile.
"Mister? Jeez kid, 147 years isn't that old. Just call me Shinsei."
