Anger came in many flavours. There was the simmering anger, the kind that sat deep in the pit of your stomach like a lead weight and never truly went away, but never truly boiled over. Then the white hot anger, the kind that burned through your veins like wildfire, that kind that left your head foggy and your heart pounding as you lost yourself to raw instinct.
Robert had sampled those flavours, and countless others too, But never in his life had he felt anger that made him sad.
But when Evelynn tried to argue with him, to convince him that, no matter what, she was going to go insane, and any action to prevent it would be to kill her, he tasted that anger. His eye truly settled on her for the first time, and he found himself wanting to lunge across that room, to hit her and shake her and scream at her WHY ARE YOU RUINING THIS? EVERYTHING WAS GOOD! WE WERE HAPPY!
He couldn't deny there was some small, fleeting catharsis in the fantasy, but it still made him miserable to think about.
"In an allotment near the Karakura river in the year 2000 and... 6, I think. There was a 24 year old woman who had died of a heroin overdose, and her soul was bound to the apartment. A Demi Hollow. I was meant to purify her, but instead, I used Kidō to stabilize her so that the process of moving her didn't immediately hollowify her, and I took her to a secret lab. Then I found another washed up Demi Hollow who died in the same way. Poor bastard drowned on his own vomit. And then I found another, and another. Within six months I had four Demi Hollows, and do you know what I did with them? I forced their souls to go through the same process that occurs when one hollow eats another. I forced these fledgling, not-quite-hollows together and the result was a single hollow with four distinct hollow holes, intense schizophrenia, and some of the most fascinating powers I've ever seen. It died two weeks later, because the methodology I used wasn't stable."
He pushed off the wall and took a few steps closer to her, coming to a stop in the center of the room. "You're telling me that I am capable of creating new sub-species that have never been conceived of, but I have to accept mere mental degradation as a fact? I am a scientist. My entire existence is built around rejecting being told I cannot do things and then finding ways to do them. You want me to accept that in, what, 6 months, a year, five years, ten, a hundred, three hundred, however long it fucking takes, I'm going to have to watch you just ... go? Snap? For the Evelynn I know to die and for some deranged animal to take its place? YOU WANT ME TO ACCEPT THAT? NO! I FUCKING REFUSE! THE WORLD DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY, I WILL NOT LET IT!"
He didn't quite notice his voice gradually rising until it had become a thunderous shout, and by then he didn't care enough to adjust his volume. This was fucking insanity, pure and simple. He would not accept a world where this would be the outcome, not while he had the power to change things.
And if that meant killing her to save her, then yes. Yes he would.
"I cannot name you an Arrancar that hasn't gone insane, because I haven't interacted with many, but just... stop the fatalist bullshit. You're not cursed to lose yourself to insanity. We don't know what's happening. And..." He closed the distance, until they were just an arm's length apart. "...Yes. If the choice I had before me was either losing you forever, or purifying you, I think I would purify you, But that is NOT killing you. I would never kill you."
