Hands on his hips, Tova just stood there and listened. Just like before, he nodded along as she spoke and didn’t argue with a single word. Most of it was needlessly shoring up her own confidence in the face of the things he was saying and showing her. He could practically see visions of his world play through her mind, the smiling face of Anastasia, and the century of, effectively, complete peace. He knew these things would take root like weeds in her mind and spread around, but as she went on, she started to hide behind a torrent of words and self-affirmations.
That was when he knew he got her.
Tova even nodded at the barking at the dog comment, but that was when he finally cut in.
“You’re right,” he admitted, jovially, with a beaming smile. “You’re nothing like Amaya. Amaya never tried. You’re far, far stronger than she was and, in my opinion, much more attractive too. You’re what Amaya wished she could be and threw a fit when she wasn’t. Don’t turn into her.”
Right then, he saw her want to open her mouth. He just smiled again and wiggled his index finger right in front of her face.
“Ah, ah, I’m not done,” he chided her. “Now, you said I don’t know everything: You’re also right. I couldn’t beat the Transcendentals, here or in the other world. So I don’t try, it’s like a chimp playing chess with a grandmaster. As much as I hate to admit it.”
There was, in his voice, a genuine air of frustration. Tova hated to be second to these people, he hated every minute of it, and that’s why he would never give up trying to find ways to beat them. But now, for the moment, he realized and admitted his inferiority. Understanding that, and hating it with every fiber of his being, is what had gotten him this far.
Eventually, he truly believed, it’d allow him to defeat them as well.
He only lost the smile for a moment, “But, then again, none of us can. I’ll keep working towards it though, Miyuki, because that’s what I do and that’s how I got this powerful. Keep in mind, though: Aside from the greatest beings in the known universe, no one else there could lay a hand on me. Who else in your world can say they’re totally above everyone else? Hm?”
Just as he suspected, he saw that get something in her. She was going to go off again, but Tova didn’t want to hear it. He put that index finger from before right on her lips and pressed into them gently, shushing her as he leaned over to get to her height.
“Still not done, behave,” he whispered now that he was certain she was quiet. “Now, Miyuki, for all of your weak little posturing, I think we all know you didn’t buy a word of it. You bit off more than you could chew with your little field trip. So, if you’re as great as you think you are, here’s your real challenge: Admit, and accept, that you will have to go to war for what you want, because the people there will not roll over for you. And, can’t you feel that?”
This time, the question wasn’t rhetorical. He let it hang in the air between them as he eyed her and saw himself reflect in those blue orbs of hers. He wanted her to think about it, to think about what “that” even was. To really consider what she was feeling, right there, past her thin veil of defense against the things he was saying in the things she was seeing.
“That urge,” he finally continued. “To test yourself against them and come out on top, proving that you were right? To finally stop making excuses and work to take what you want? Because what started this, for me, Miyuki? Was one such moment. I stopped making excuses and just did, and that’s the secret. Open yourself up to it. Let nothing stop you, never, because I certainly don’t.”
In that moment, he felt his words dig into her mind. His power to twist perception, trust, and doubt all proved unnecessary—he didn’t need it, he had reality already on his side. By the time he finished speaking, his face was right in front of hers, their eyes locked together.
He let her think about his last few words very, very carefully as the index finger left her lips.
And then he kissed her soundly.
That was when he knew he got her.
