A lot had happened. So much that a single mind couldn't keep track of it all. One thing was clear.
They'd faced extinction for yet another time in the last twenty years. Once more a powerful enemy waltzed into the realm they called home and laid waste to them. Cut them like pigs to the slaughter. The streets had ran red and the skies blackened with smoke.
Yet, somehow, they as a species. As a cluster of beings had managed to hang on. To firmly deny the eradication that seemed to be coming more and more near with each passing year. For how much longer they could continue this was uncertain.
It had been weeks. Months, even, since that day. The fires were out, the dead buried, the lesser damaged homes repaired, the rubble cleared, the homeless put into shelters, and life was slowly makings its way back to as it had been before. It would be some time before things were completely back to as they'd been.
Every division had been busy assisting as best they could. Third provided aid to the sick and wounded while distributing food when and where needed. Second was keeping law and order and fourth was doing their best along with first and fifth.
Leadership had changed hands again. Kasumi and Nanami had moved off to the first division leaving Ogawa in charge of the division. He was a good man, a career soldier, as far as she knew, like herself. He'd been in combat with her once that she was aware of in France and beyond that they'd gone their separate ways. Though, how many actually knew their new captains face? How many knew that the leadership had changed? More over, the division needed a break.
So, from her own stock of food and stores from her farms larder she'd organized a small dinner for the hard working people of her fine division. How better to show appreciation for the long hours and hard work than by feeding a group that moved on their stomachs?
She'd kept it quiet for the most part. Some within her immediate team had aided in the organization and execution of the event and others who had simply been walking nearby had loaned their hands and their voices to gather the mass of bodies to the largest dining hall. As the hungry mass packed in the ancient woman lifted herself atop a chair and waited patiently for the room to grow quiet. She was no longer an officer so it wasn't within her right or power to yell at the anxious bodies that awaited a hot meal, a good drink and fine company. Patience was a thing she had come to have in spades as of late. While she personally was unsure of what she as a person was beyond a blond woman who called herself Victoria she had found that buried long beneath the centuries of gruff outer strength was a pool of quiet patience. Which she would now use to wait for the attention of those present.
Slowly the chatter and banter died away as eyes turned towards her with the silence being broken by the odd cough or a particularly loud gurgle of a stomach.
"Thank you all for coming," she began her voice flexing that Gaelic twinge she'd had in life but had buried for so many centuries, "I know we've been all very busy since the invasion. Rebuilding, patrolling and mopping up stragglers. I want you to know that your hard work has not gone unnoticed. I, as a member of this division for as long as I have been, am very proud of you all. You're some of the best people I've had the pleasure and privilege of knowing. I wanted to reward you all for doing everything asked of you and more. I could think of no better way than to provide you all with a hot meal, good spirits and the company of your comrades.
You'll notice the food is a bit different than what you normally have. All of these dishes are from my home land many centuries past. Roast meats, a porridge of mixed grains, bread, cheese, vegetables, and sweets of various kinds. Among the spirits for you all to try are wines of my time please be careful as these are very strong and should be cut with water before you drink them. Again, this is all for you. Without you the fifth is nothing. Please enjoy the food and relax."
With that she popped off the table and quietly stepped back to allow those in attendance to get to the food that had tormented their noses for what had to feel like an eternity.
