Nagato nodded and took a step backwards from the woman, as he did so his bastons transformed into small rods of light, the pillar of silver energy in his left hand drifted straight into his right hand joining the other, this remaining glowing stick shortened and then reshaped itself before growing dull until he was once again holding the sealed form of Kako to Mirai. Lifting up his leg he balanced on one foot with ease while resheathing his knife into it’s housing strapped to the side of his boot.
Standing properly once more he clasped his hand behind his back and frowned slightly at Zâbel’s words. Nodding he stared into her eyes for a moment as if searching for something. Her words where somewhat depreciating however he didn’t see any resentment in her gaze, no overwhelming bitterness or anything that might get in the way of her learning. Was she regretful? He believed he saw that shadow within her eyes, after all where they not the windows to the soul? However hopefully that regret was not hold her back but rather fuel her quest towards becoming a proper soldier.
‘Something more of her kind should aspire to.’ he thought to himself towards no little pride that his friend has sought him out with this goal in mind.
Clearing his throat he broke eye contact and let his gaze wander over her shoulder slightly as he considered his words before replying to her point. “I think so.”
Gesturing for the Fourth Division Researcher to follow him the man walked back towards where he’d left his duffel bag of equipment lying, as they walked he elaborated on his observations. “You have a keen mind suited for fighting, a high fight IQ as it where, but your body is incapable to do what you want. Also sometimes your instincts are to respond to the attacks in inefficient or unrealistic ways due to a lack of experience.” he told her.
Kneeling down next to the bag he unzipped it and began to check the contents. “I’ll train you in what hand-to-hand skills I can.” he informed her “I’ll also train you in Kali, first in stick then double stick, knife, double knife, stick and knife, blade, double blade and all that. We can find out how to adapt such skills to fit your Bhuj. Whilst I can be of limited help with classical swordsmanship I recommend you use your spare time to get the Gotei sword instructors to do so instead.”
Taking out two sets of rattan escrima bastons he set them on the ground, almost identical in appearance to Nagato’s own released Shikai.
“The best I can do aside from that is give you a frequent sparring partner to help you build up your confidence in combat. To go with you on real world missions to provide you with some actual battle experience.”
The man stood, holding the sticks, while frowning at the woman. He looked her up and down appraisingly before continuing slowly. “The biggest issue to tackling literally centuries of physical degradation.” he stated bluntly “Frankly I’m not sure if you’ll ever be strong or fast enough to fight like I do but… there is another solution. I’ll look into it, it’s not something I can introduce you to but there’s a young man in the First who might be able to help. If his suggestion fits then you can approach those who are more experienced than him if needed.”
He didn’t say it out loud, didn’t even hint to it but what the man was considering was the modern art of Shunkō. His old Captain in the Sixth, another Kohara, had been a master of the technique as was his current silver haired Captain. Still he’d need to look into it further before discussing it as he wasn’t sure how suitable or even possible it was, Kidō lay far outside his realm of expertise.
Holding out two sticks for her to take he tilted his head slightly. “Should we get started then?” he asked.
He said nothing else while he waited for a response but his cold gaze once again met hers as he waited for response. Was this a test? Perhaps. She had just been through what was admittedly an utterly exhausting sparring session, something her body was far from used to. Professionally this was probably a bad idea, dangerous to her physical wellbeing. Nagato didn’t care. It was more important to see how far she was willing to go… how far would she force herself to pursue this path.
