A young man, matted hair, dirty rags for clothing, and eyes comparable to a dead fish sat perched on the top of one of many branches, he was in the forestry at the edge of the slums, staring up at the sky with his usual blank expression. He'd made his promise with Moriko. Each day he had to find a single reason to live .. but it wasn't as easy as it sounded. He didn't care about anything, he didn't really want to try either, but for some reason, the girl's eyes had burned into him- and demanded something of him. He stared at the sky from his perch and for a brief moment, he almost frowned. It was troublesome, he'd never felt any desire or need to do anything .. even if it was just "live", only his fear had halted him until that day he met her and she stopped him when he was finally at his limit. Yet here he was, even if it was as bare minimal as "find a reason to live each day", he was still trying to do that for her- why?
It didn't make any sense to him, and a sigh passed through his lips- before he blinked, realizing what he'd done. He hadn't signed in years, that had been his last "outward expression" to be removed because it was so neutral, but it still had gone eventually, still too dangerous. Yet .. he'd done it?
Dangerous. That damn girl was dangerous, how the fuck was she changing so much about him so quickly ..? The thought made him slowly run a hand over his face, he had to calm down, he hadn't gotten this worked up in so long he forgot how difficult it was to control once you got going. It didn't matter- he'd hold his promise, that was the decision he'd made .. even if he didn't understand why. Relaxing slowly, he let his gaze trail toward the ground once more. That meant that he needed to find something today, right ..? Something that helped every day .. but he wasn't really sure. Things like that were impossible to find as far as he knew .. the world was too dark, too cruel. Finding something worth living for once was hard enough, every day seemed beyond impossible, especially for him.
Slowly, he let his gaze drift upward toward the night sky once more, before he blinked once slowly- looking at the single beam of light that shown through the darkness. One became many, the sun was rising .. that was nothing new, he'd seen it plenty of times, after all- coming out before it rose to escape his father was common practice at this point in his life. But for some reason it seemed .. different, today. The golden beams of light seared through the darkness like a flame through tinder, cutting a swath through it with each second that passed. The way the darkness was slowly cast out, burned away by the brilliant light, it was .. soothing? Slowly, his eyelids lowered- he didn't know why. Perhaps it was because it was poetic to his current situation? The light could, theoretically, be Moriko, and the darkness was him?
No. That made it sound too much like love and hope, things he was void of, and had no desire for either. But it was .. certainly soothing if nothing else. It let him relax, just slightly, as if watching the darkness seared away was some unknown therapy- and as he slowly curled into a ball on his perch, chin resting on his bruised and battered knee's, he was able to find that "one thing". This happened everyone morning .. and he felt like, if he kept going, imagining seeing this each morning, then he could keep going. At least for now, and that was the best he was going to do, really. With this thought, he would slowly relax into the branch, simply quietly watching the sun banish away the darkness, his eyes trailing toward the shadows that remained .. a stark reminder, that no matter how brilliant the light, darkness always found a way. Still. Despite that pessimistic, no, realistic- line of thinking .. this was enough.
Moriko had better be happy with this much, at the very least.
