Yui’s eyes widened and she stopped moving at his first sentence, not really able to simply shake it off and keep walking in step behind him. Act… as a test subject? She had thought when he said experimentation something like trying a new form of Kaido or testing the differences between her Reiatsu and his… things like that. But test subject? Her mind crawled through the horrors of what that could mean; experimental new drugs or something that could wind up with horrible side effects. Surely he hadn’t meant it like that… right? No, his tone was level and she could tell he hadn’t been joking.
The second sentence rang through her mind, hitting the keyword of ‘servant’. She wasn’t going to be his damn slave in return for lessons. That wasn’t how this worked, but then another thought crossed her mind; maybe he was saying the extreme to see what she was willing to do and what she wasn’t. Going to the extreme and trying to find a middle ground. He commented on such soon after, asking her to be direct and claiming that he could be reasonable… but part of her wondered what his definition of ‘reasonable’ was. Yui shook her head and then caught up to him quietly, thinking on his words. He had said that he would take the matter seriously, and that much she could appreciate, but still, she remained quiet, her mind racing. This wasn’t a minor matter anymore, this was serious… she was talking to someone who she could tell was far smarter than she was, and because she was honorable and wouldn’t go back on an agreement, she had to be careful what she agreed to.
His statement regarding honesty was something she had somewhat expected at this point, as he was obviously a man who had secrets he didn’t want to share. He had said that he wouldn’t lie, but he also didn’t agree to telling her everything, and in a way, it made sense. She didn’t want to tell people everything either. But with him, that meant she would need to search for hidden dangers in every sentence he spoke, and even more so in the ones that went unspoken. Could she handle that? All for some damn Kaido lessons? The scales didn’t seem tipped in her favor at all right now, and she didn’t have enough bargaining power to even things out. She was going to have to make a call, here and now, and this was either going to seal the deal, or it wasn’t going to happen at all.
“I am Yui Shokotsuki of the Second Division, a four century veteran of the Gotei, and a blade to those who would threaten our way of life.” There was a pause. A pretty typical response without giving him anything he didn’t already know. “I cannot hope to cover every possible approach, and must maintain my right to refuse tasks that are too risky based on the information I have been given, or has been withheld. I am deeply uncomfortable in trading lessons for being a test subject or slave to your every whim. I would volunteer to work with you, but as a peer, not some desperate insect that interests you. You don’t have to tell me everything, but just as you would like to make an informed decision about me, I would expect the same about the tasks you would ask of me. And I think I am the right one because I also won’t up and quit because something is difficult. If we come to an agreement, I will see it through, whether it be training Kaido, gathering information, or whatever else that would be required.” She took a few breaths, letting all that information sink in. “I will not stop until I have the respect of the Gotei, and I’m certainly not going to sink that goal simply to make you feel superior. If we do this, it is with mutual respect, and to an extent, trust.”
Her tone was even and flat, and while there was emotion behind the words, it came out as tempered resolve and determination. It was his move now, and she waited, her eyes locked onto his, that violet gaze unwaivering.
