If simply improving one’s combat skills was the goal, then Fifth was the best choice, but she seemed to be more than a mere fighter. Nevertheless, with a few exceptions, it was the place where most of the best melee combatants could be found. However, no one need be limited by their choice of division. Again, Merrick could serve as the example. He was a member of Third Division, Seireitei’s Spellcasting Elite, an appellation which he wasn’t fond of, and yet when it was time to improve his zanjutsu, he sought out Fifth Division. As such, Machie could have selected a squad where she was more comfortable. Of course this was merely an assumption. Perhaps she was more than content with her choice. In any case, he had given it entirely too much thought and returned his attention to his food and the other potential topics of conversation.
Before she completely answered his questions, she responded with one of her own. Was there something specific which he wanted? As was often the case with Alain, the answer wasn’t so simple. “Yes and no. On the one hand, I would be willing to listen to any insights that you might have had after reading the text. It is a subject which interests me after all. But I also possess an interest in anything which is new to me or unique. That is not such a specific query at the moment because I do not know what your talents might be until you reveal them. Hence, my question about having something rare in your background.”
Despite a somewhat neutral expression, Machie seemed to relish the division’s food more than him. Merrick held no opinion whatsoever. He needed food and so he ate. He didn’t really care what it tasted like as long as it served its purpose as sustenance. As he awaited on Machie’s reply, he suddenly had a thought. Maybe he could use food as another means of gaining advantage or some semblance of control. Unlike himself, other people seemed to enjoy food. Perhaps he could use a fancy meal to ply information from his peers on occasion. It was worth considering. While absently tapping a sandaled foot on the floor, his eyes began to hunt around for a wall clock. He needed to determine how best to multitask throughout the rest of his day and whether the various activities could be performed in the company of a colleague.
