Malus meditated in the outskirts of Karakura Town. The sea of stars in the night's sky hung in a majestic backdrop to the waning moon. Over the last century Malus had grown the love the night. Not in artistic sense really, but rather as the perfect time to hunt. The time of day when all the world's darkest souls crept out of their holes to engage in acts under the cover of darkness. When Malus's preferred prey scurried about and scurried about. But really gave the night an extra sense of majesty was the gnawing hunger growing in Malus's gut. It had been days since he last hunted a group of Quincy whose souls, like many of their unfortunate kind was mired in hate. Who killed souls permanently, and did so with a sick sense of pleasure and duty.
Malus let his mind stretch out away from him. His power seeing the light and darkness with the souls his perception touched. Opening their memories of their lives to him like an open book. Letting him judge those within his sphere of influence and find the perfect souls to hunt this evening. It was several minutes when he sensed his prey, two souls filled with greed, violence, and predation hiding, laying in wait for a victim. Malus felt a spring of joy fill him as looked forward to their faces when the hunters became the hunted. The look of terror as those who sought to prey on others became themselves prey. It was a look he cherished almost above all other looks on a sentient being.
Focusing his awareness on his prey he jogged toward them in long, lanky strides that seemed sedate but could eat up miles without wearing down a predator. The easy strides, conserving energy till it was time to rush in for the kill. As he neared them a spike of anger welled up within him. Noticing a neutral soul with a life growing within it just now nearing where the two n'er do wells waited in ambush. Damn! I'm still green after all this time if I let the thrill of retribution distract me from a pregnant woman heading towards harm! I hate not using my power when I'm not right my target, but I'd rather risk missing the good part if it means protecting an unborn child! Malus chided himself.
Malus felt their trap springing upon the woman as his power reached down into them and enacted his judgement upon them. His power was an odd one for a Hollow. A power that affected memories of those around them, and like the evil doers he was pursuing could make them see their actions through the eyes and emotions of their victims. Letting them feel their evil ways through those they have wronged. Or for others he could allow them to relive good times, seeing memories that could help or heal. But always at a cost of him physically witnessing both good and evil of all the beings within the range of his reiatsu perception. And the two he hunted had plenty of darkness within them.
Years of preying on others, stealing their valuables, and if they didn't part willingly with them. Their victims lives, and now they just attempted to endanger a woman full with child for their insatiable hunger for wealth. Filled with righteous rage, Malus rounded the corner seeing the woman panicking as tears of black sludge fell from the eyes of her would be attackers. Sighing, Malus let his power dredge up a memory of her childhood when she played with the man who would eventually impregnate her. Letting her eyes glow gold as she got lost in the memories he whispered, "Worry not child. Soon these two will be gone, and this will have been naught but a dream. Quickly forgotten."
The youngest of the attackers was starting to come too, as Malus wrapped his meaty tentacles around their throats and tossed them deep into the ally where he could have fun with his food. A smile formed as he heard the meaty crunches of their bodies landing bodily further down the ally. Looking at the woman he said, "I've mentally marked you, and I'll be along someday to check up on you two."
