Niji tried sticking to the shadows as she walked through Rukongai, sensing the souls around her definitely helped her keep clear of the masses. All the while Obsession's words haunted her, dogged her every step. "Several dozen people are now dead because you wanted to be a distraction. You bought them a five minute head start and then killed them by making me angry. The worst part is that if you hadn't gotten in my way they'd have lived, I had no intention of harming them otherwise. You are a disgusting, putrid, stupid creature, Niji Amidasu, and it seems that even without the influence of your zanpakuto you are inherently rotten. Perhaps it would be best for everybody if you just stopped trying."
Sure she tried playing it as if she didn't care. That she was acknowledging that she was a Monster, and didn't care. But the truth was it struck her deeply. Worse of all, she got released only to learn that there was a war brewing between Seireitei and the Quincy, and that not all wanted it but a small fraction ... a small fraction that was going to bring harm to a lot of people. And she was nowhere near as good as she could've been to help Frey.
That life had passed her by, only getting worse, while she weakened from the lack of training. That she was rusty. That she was a monster who killed a bunch of souls she was trying to protect. But she couldn't stop trying, and in the end she had no idea what happened next. It was such a blur that the events were a murky soup of terror that even her Zanpakuto if she wasn't shaken from the experience as well could probably tell her more about.
But she had a goal, a mission for the day. Avoid all of the souls in Rukongai in case any of them were still blaming the demon for bringing more misfortune upon their lives. And train herself back into working order. You are a disgusting, putrid, stupid creature, Niji Amidasu ... perhaps it would be best for everybody if you just stopped trying.
No! I have to keep trying ... I ... I need to be more than the Demon of the Forest. I ... No Niji! Fuck it! Just go out there and kill anything eatable.
Kill anything that's a challenge. Just don't think about him! You need to get back in the game, and only senseless, thought killing violence is the answer! If I'm lucky I'll be able to kill and eat a Hollow before any Shini get there.
It took her to the better part of the afternoon before she got to the Forest. Letting her mind wander she found two bears that would be good for a warm up. Limbering her joints she was off in a flash.
