It was within walking distance of his own quarters and yet there was a stillness not found in the entirety of the Seireitei here. Not a single soul passed by and nothing but the wind could be heard. The same stillness found in the water flowed through the viking descendant. Unlike his ancestors, he had found power in silence and restraint. Calming his breath, clearing his mind, keeping all of his focus solely on his Reiryoku.
For a long time, he had followed the path of a monk he had met during his travels. A mantra of conviction, a goal of asserting complete control of your body. There was no secret to his way; no specific technique, no saying, not even a culture or following. All he had learned at that time was the ability to completely still your thoughts and achieve piece of mind.
Ever since he first laid eyes on a Shinigami, he had made it his goal to complete the training and graduate from the Shinōreijutsuin. Ever since that day so many years ago when he had met her for the first time. He had learned many things and it was all because of her.
And now the pendulum swings.
A scream. Followed by another. And a third, finally waking him up. A faint smell he recognized entered the room as he rubbed his eyes. He glanced at the clock, rubbed his eye once again and turned his head towards the timepiece once more. It’s still in the middle of the night. Another scream sounded across the district, this time louder than the first few. What’s going on?
The soul sat up on the side of his bed, still rubbing his eyes as he slid his feet towards his slippers. His left went in as it should while he fumbled a bit with the right one. Grabbing the mattress, he pushed himself up as he heard another voice yelling.
“Fire!”
He moved towards the window slowly, barely lifting his feet as he walked, past the dining area in his small home. He had managed to find a place near his shop, less than a hundred square feet, all in a single room. The house had a small alcove for his bed, a tiny little kitchen and a living area, half of which he had turned into a dining room. Four chairs surrounded a square table sitting in one end of the room as a couch had its back turned towards the back of one chair. There was little decoration; a few vases, curtains on only one of the windows, a single lamp beside the couch.
As he passed the dining room table, he leaned out towards the window. Slowly pulling the lever up, he opened up the window to see a blaze in front of him. Smoke poured out of what seemed to be a structure not too far away, completely set on fire. He watched as the scarlet embers reached higher and higher, enveloping the building.
A few seconds passed before he realized what he was looking at.
