Merrick marched along the halls of the Seireitei Hospital after dealing with a pair of wounded colleagues. The sparring injuries were nothing new, especially when they involved members of the Infantry Fighting Force. None of the other divisions caused him even half as many problems as Fifth. Mercifully, Alain had just been given an opportunity to turn this latest incident to his advantage. While examining to the injuries of the two men, he overheard them speak about an upcoming assignment. They were part of a three person team being sent to earth to deal with a troublesome hollow which had been wreaking havoc somewhere in New York. Scheduled to leave in the next hour or two, the pair were in a hurry. For the Shinigami medic, their accumulation of injuries would have been a simple matter. However, if he wanted to replace them on the mission, then he needed them out of the way. As such, he placed them in the care of a green recruit fresh from the Academy whose efforts to heal them would take considerably longer.
Ending his shift a few minutes early, he stopped by the office of a superior to have a word. During the brief conversation, Merrick expressed his desire to volunteer for an upcoming mission. He explained that his interest was purely medical in nature. The hollow in question used a kind of paralytic anesthesia on its victims that he wanted to study. It took a bit of maneuvering on his part, but after assuring his boss that he would return in time for his next shift, permission was granted. So without further delay, Alain was out of the hospital and on his way to Fifth Division headquarters to meet with the last member of the team, Machie. An interesting individual to say the least, the two had met once and she had left him with a positive impression. Specifically, she was quiet. It may have been an act of course, but Merrick liked to think that he was a better judge of character. Thus, he suspected that she would remain tight-lipped in the event that she saw something which he preferred to remain secret. This made her an ideal traveling companion if he couldn’t go alone.
Upon arriving in Fifth’s domain, he began a hasty search for Machie. If I recall correctly, she mentioned a fondness for training if not outright fighting. This made the training center his first priority. Always conscious to remain as efficient as possible, he asked any passers-by if they had seen the woman. He had no luck on the way, but once inside, he met a young woman in one of the martial arts training halls who had just spoken to Machie. She informed him that his quarry was returning to the barracks, but didn’t know a specific room number. For Merrick, the destination alone would be enough. Besides, it was another chance to test his sense detection skills. Marching from the training center as quickly as he arrived, it was only a matter of minutes before he had finished roaming the halls of the barracks. Now he stood outside the door of where he tracked the reiatsu signature. Rapping against wood, he waited. Let us see how I did.
