“District Forty,” Machie answered distantly, mind already drifting to the possible outcomes of her search. The uncomfortable twist of her stomach made her lips press together into a firm line.
“I think breakfast is a good idea. We can go a little further before stopping. District Twenty Four maybe?”
She lead the medic through the thickening crowds as the morning rush began to take hold. The thin woman wove her way through the crowd with ease, managing to make minimal contact with other people despite the small spaces between them. The ache in her legs began to ease as they crossed more districts and Machie increased the pace until her quick, short strides nearly forced her to run.
The dark skinned woman stayed quiet, not even bothering to glance back to see if Merrick was following her. She could hear his reiatsu signature when she focused, the sound reminding her of a brisk wind. Despite the tentative nature of her trust in him, the medic’s presence was reassuring; at the very least it ensured that she would not back out at the last moment. The idea of the ire wasting Merrick’s time was a suitable deterrent for giving up on her task.
Machie allowed herself to relax and assume a more leisurely stride once they reached the middle of District Twenty Four, South Rukongai. She glanced at Merrick over her shoulder briefly before inserting herself into the crowd. There were some open markets, vendors shouting about their wares behind stands. Restaurants and shops lined the stone-paved road. She stopped at a teahouse topped by a tiled roof with slanted eaves. She slid open the door and stepped inside, hazel eyes inspecting the spacious interior. Rice paper sliding doors bordered the main room, eight low, wooden tables with cushions around them filled the majority of the space. People knelt and sat around these, speaking to each other in murmuring tones. The occasional vase with cherry blossom branches added a pop of color while scrolls with ink artwork accented the walls.
A young woman in a red furisode decorated in a floral pattern greeted them. “Good morning,” she said with a short bow. “This way please.” She gestured, the long sleeve of her outfit flowing with the motion. The waitress guided them to a table near the back.
After Machie and Merrick were seated, the young woman continued to address them, “My name is Riku and I will be your server for today. What would you like to start with?”
Machie looked up at Riku from her seated position, legs folded to the side, for a full minute before speaking.
Riku’s smile nearly wavered when the dark skinned shinigami finally spoke, “Could we have a pot of green tea, please?”
Machie turned her gaze toward Merrick, shifting attention to her companion.
