Merick's promise of honesty earned him a soft, warm look from the female shinigami. Despite the lack of an obvious smile, her appreciation was clear.
"What do you mean?" Machie blinked, looking a bit confused. Nevertheless, she took a few larger steps until she was at the dark haired medic's side. "It's only...." she hesitated, as usual, "it is a habit I suppose. I must have adopted it in Rukongai..." she looked away, frowning slightly.
Being so close to a man made her feel tense. It was something she had never been quite able to pin down, but maintaining her distance from men was only natural. It was why the habit of staying a few steps behind had come so easily to her. This was the closest she had been to the healer outside of him treating her medically. Still, he'd asked her to walk at his side and it would have been rude to refuse.
"I suppose my quarters will suffice for our meeting." She lapsed into silence afterwards, eyes wandering as they made their way towards the Fifth Division.
"I take it you are not familiar with the habit of some women to walk a bit behind men? It is not uncommon in some parts of Rukongai." Shyly, the feline woman glanced back at Merrick before looking away again. Whatever her thoughts on the matter were, they remained unspoken for the time being.
Machie lead Merrick into her small apartment in the barracks. The low table and cushions were the same as before, it was sparsely decorated much like before. A bowl of peaches sat on the coffee table and a few books were stacked off to one side. The feline woman broke away from her place at Merrick's side to take a scroll off the table and roll it up, concealing what looked like music.
"Please, make yourself comfortable. Would you like something to drink? I can make tea, or coffee if you prefer."She looked over her shoulder at the medic to see if he would request anything.
"I have a bit of food as well if you would like," the dark skinned woman added. Once Merrick answered, she left him in the living/dining area to put the scroll away and fetch refreshments.
