5th Seat of the 13th Division

Age: 350+ [? as Human, 103 in Rukongai, 241 as a Shinigami]
Date of Death: 13th of November 1002 C.E.
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Norse-Gael
Physical Specifications
Height and Weight: 185cm & 72.5kg
Eyes: Deep pools of ocean blue, like two sinkholes speckled with flecks of aquamarine seafoam.
Hair: Long masses of orange-red fire bound behind his head.
General Appearance
Lacking the physical definition of most other Shinigami, Raghnall has substituted most of that training and exercise with long of sessions of reading and other indulgences. Despite his lax nature in regards to his physique, the poet's imposing stature makes up well enough for his other shortcomings. He has average features - a defined jaw, slightly crooked nose, and a prominent brow, but he does not groom himself well enough to be considered particularly attractive.
Like a meandering river, the smooth and slow movements of Raghnall only further contribute to the air of calmness that he as cultivated. Not one to be particularly bothered by most worldly matters, the 5th Seat of the 13th Division possesses a rarely-cracked veneer of a smile.
Attempting to not stand out from most Shinigami, Raghnall prefers to wear his Shihakusho without any fancy adornments or accessories. When at home or otherwise relaxing, he wears an blue-orange haori over his uniform.
Even with a great many centuries of exposure to the accents of the Rukongai and Seireitei, his honeyed words still carry the faintest tinge of a north sea accent. To most it is hardly detectable; he has studied a great number of languages since his arrival in the Soul Society. Fluent in all the languages of the British Isles as well as Japanese and Chinese, he has also made sure to be at least conversationally competent in every major language of Europe.
Psychological Profile
Positive Traits
Primary: Patient - Possessing an almost saintly level of patience, Raghnall is fully capable of waiting out most problems without becoming anxious. He is willing to overlook and readily forgive mistakes made by his superiors and peers, though he does not appear to be quite so forgiving to those underneath him. Regardless, he keeps a cool head and aggravating him is rather dificult.
Secondary: Loyal - Remarkably loyal, Raghnall displays a willing readiness to carry out the orders of his superiors as well as the requests of his peers to the T. He gets the job done, regardless of any potential backlash or controversy directed back at him. Unlike some other Shinigami who are dissatisfied with having to do tours on Earth during the current crisis despite their ranks, Raghnall has been known to go so far as to offer to serve the tours of other high-ranking officers - though the bureaucracy of the Seireitei generally does not allow this kind of thing, the attempts have softened the opinions of several powerful people in Soul Society.
Tertiary: Driven - Beyond simply following the orders of those above him, Raghnall is committed to finishing everything he sets his mind to. An accomplished poet and novelist, he is more likely to go well out of his way to accomplish his goals - to the point of absurdity - than let any simple thing slide him by.
Negative Traits
Primary: Deceptive - Raghnall is prone to lying, cheating, and threatening all those who he does not directly report to. While he is typically careful to not alert anyone with actual sway, this facet of his nature has nonetheless generated many "rumors" about him amidst Rukongai citizens and lower-ranking Shinigami. He is quite good at covering his tracks, but some have begun to become suspicious as to why this seemingly average officer has his hands in so many different pies through the Seireitei.
Secondary: Hypocritical - The standards that apply to others, to "lessers", does not apply to Raghnall in his own eyes. Whether it be because he values his own goals much more greatly than those of potential unknowns, or simply because he seems keen to cultivate a good reputation among the higher ranks, his underlings have not experienced the same niceties that he offers to more prominent people.
Tertiary: Reticent - Seen as unnecessarily quiet and withholding by many, Raghnall believes heavily in the idea that much of the work of the Gotei 13 is on a need-to-know basis and that handing out unnecessary information to expendables is not in the best interest of the Soul Society. Of course, when he wants to know...
Zanpakutō File
Zanpakutō Spirit
名所 Meisho - "Revered Heart"
The spirit within Raghnall's Zanpakutō, Meisho, presents herself as the corpse of a young girl wearing her own funeral attire. A peculiarity of hers is that she appears as though he had been drawn into existence - sketched with graphite into the very air itself, possessing a ghastly black-and-white visage with deep, dark pits for eyes. She is generally calm, but prone to psychotic fits of anger and delusion.
Inner World
Raghnall's Inner World is a place of serenity and deep contemplation for him, and a common place for him. At first entry in the world, it appears to merely be a small pondside grove in a deep forest with an oddly slow-moving waterfall feeding the pool. Despite this, the surface of the water does not ripple at all and instead constantly maintains a mirror-like shine and reflection.
Entering into the pond will transport Raghnall to a replica of whatever location he is thinking of at the moment, though lacking sufficient connection to that location will result in nothing happening. The most common are places featured prominently in fiction of the time: a sea beside a great tree where a god hung himself from, a lake near the meadhall of a great slayer of monsters, or a pond beside the castle of a great king and his table of knights.
Sealed Zanpakutō
In it's sealed form, Meisho is a very standard sword. It lacks any fancy decorations or colors, possessing a simple guard and black sheath. The blade itself is, again, rather nondescript. It has an average length blade with no peculiarities and is kept well maintained by Raghnall. It has no tassel and has a simple black-on-white diamond style grip.
Shikai Appearance & Abilities
名所, 私を訪ねて Meisho, watashi o tazunete (Visit yourself upon me, Meisho)
When released, Meisho retains the same shape and size as its sealed form. The only perceptible difference between the two forms is that a small orb of ink (varying in size according to the application and tool used) appears at the tip of whatever "writing instrument" Raghnall is using. This can be a finger, pen, pencil, brush, the tip of a sword, or whatever else he might be using. Using this ink, he can inscribe an effect into whatever he is writing on. If written on a piece of paper, the next person to touch that paper will experience the effect hours after contact. If written directly onto the skin, the effect is immediate - though it can be delayed or stretched with the conscious effort of both Raghnall and the recipient.
The effects that can applied are generally weak, and the scope of effects is narrow. It cannot be used to kill, seriously maim, or control others. Any mental swaying is small and restricted to basic feelings. A sense of joy, anger, or sorrow. The amount of ink in this orb is only enough for a single word or phrase - the shorter and smaller the symbol, word, or phrase, the more potent the effect is. Long and drawn out sentences have imperceptible to no effect, though the effect can be written in any language known to Raghnall.
Documented History
Prologue
Even after just having appeared in Rukongai, Raghnall's memories of his human life were nearly non-existent. Only fragments remained in his memory - a name: Raghnall, and the vague impression that he had been a man of the cloth. But which God's words he spoke, how many, or even if it had been the same set his whole life were unknown to him. He took "Raghnall" as his name, and christened himself Uí Ímair - Son of Ivarr.
In time, even these cursory remnants began to fade and soon the tongues he had spoken in vanished into the mists of his mind. Soon thereafter he adopted a more common name amongst the spirits of Soul Society - Ryou.
It took Raghnall many, many years to fully cultivate the necessary spiritual pressure necessary to enter the academy and become a Shinigami. After over a century of living in various area of the Rukongai, he joined the Shin'ō Academy in the 1110's and slowly but surely progressed through his courses and created his Zanpakutō. He did best in Kido classes, but overall had rather standard grades.
Relevant Background
Following his graduation, Raghnall was assigned to the 3rd Division for his skill in Kidō. He remained here, serving the role well enough until he manifested his Shikai and its abilities around the 1150's. After the discovery of his new power, he was transferred to the 7th Division in order to use his new abilities to support other Shinigami both in the field and in the Seireitei.
As he became more proficient with his Zanpakutō's abilities and more confident in his own desires, he applied for and received a transfer to the 13th Division where he continued to work loyally from the mid 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century and the start of the crisis revolving around the emergence of the Black Death.
Soon into the chaos and the ensuing manpower shortage, Raghnall was fast-tracked into the 5th seat position due to a new opening. Amidst the chaos and instability of the recent crisis, Raghnall has begun to advocate for complete reform in the Gotei - the abolishment of the Central 46 and nobility. In recent years he worked to stir up populist sentiments and weaken the old guard of the Seireitei.
