Kiriko sighed quietly, her fingers running gently through the hair at the nape of her neck as she tried to straighten her otherwise flat locks. Sleeping with her hair up had the unfortunate effect of crinkling the strands, something she would have to remember next time she decided to skip her nightly ritual. It had gotten so bland that she'd wished for a diversion, so instead of preparing for sleep like a proper person Kiriko had spent last night racing through the new world she had found with her other half. Aneue was a suitable distraction for tingling nerves and endless energy and the stories she told! Well, they had been shocking enough that Kiriko could hardly fall asleep that night as she lay in her quiet bed.
The silence of the Annex was suffocating, so very soft and murky like silken blankets tucked around her face. Breathing through the fabric was possible but uncomfortable, as if at any moment someone would tug the ends tight and cut off her air supply. That was the feeling she had in this place, the feeling of loneliness. It wasn't a matter of actually being alone, for Kiriko had many activities and people revolving around her days now – however it could not be denied that the absence of her Captain left many things aching and empty not the least of which being his half of the Annex. Cooking for herself used to be an activity that aroused pride, knowing that Tsukimiya-taichou trusted her with his kitchen, but now there was only the barest stirrings of melancholy as she whipped eggs into a froth that morning. She made a point of walking around loudly, letting her feet fall with ample force so that the floor creaked and groaned. It almost was enough to convince her that someone else was there, just around the next corner. Someone in particular.
Today was especially bad for some reason. Kiriko found herself restless without release as she tried to work through the paperwork that always creeped upon her desk even as she cleared it off day after day. The repairs had been finished within the Nibantai structures themselves. It hadn't taken much time or effort, and many of her subordinates were out helping the rest of Seireitei with their tasks. She'd given everyone a bit of leave time, to recuperate. It wasn't good to have too much free time though and that period was drawing to an end at the start of the new week. It was hard to believe that it had only been one week since those events, those indelible and incredible events.
It was hard to believe Kyousuke had only been gone seven days. Hard to believe that the hole in her life was so easy to create, the rupture and tears cascading through her heart. She didn't need to worry, he was fine obviously. Tsukimiya-taichou would never be anything other than fine. But the worry seeped in nonetheless, inching its way into her thoughts each time she paused for a sip of tea or a deep breath. What if something had happened? Those were the worst thoughts, the what ifs, because she had no information to deride them with. Kiriko's vast information network had turned up nothing when it came to her Captain's disappearance. No one had seen a thing or heard a peep, there hadn't even been any murmurs of energy clashes to explain the blood staining the haori she now wore around her shoulders. Kiriko trusted Tova when he said that Kyousuke was busy, but she just wished someone had thought of her enough to leave her a message. Or at least tell her when he was coming back. This whole worry thing was making her restless. Too restless.
Kiriko figured that if her Captain was gone the least she could do was check up on the few things he'd left in her hands. There were some interesting reports to read over, new orders to send out to an undercover team, and a debriefing to handle. But once those were cleared from her list Kiriko still had one task left to her. Takasugi Ayumi had been an interesting addition to the Second, but Kiriko couldn't say that she hadn't borne fruit after all of the labor that Tsukimiya-taichou and Kiriko had put into her. The girl was a genius, there was no one way about it. And perhaps it was time that Kiriko check up on her, look in to see how her mission was going. Kiriko didn't recall the last update Takasugi had given towards her developing poisons so it was important to make sure things were still heading in the right direction.
That was the excuse Kiriko fed herself, bit by bit as she stood up from her desk. Deep down inside, beneath her collarbone and the beating of her heart, Kiriko realized a different and softer truth. She was worried. With Tsukimiya-taichou gone, Takasugi was her last real charge from the man who had previously directed everything. Takasugi was the link between Kiriko and her Captain, and she had to make sure that link was still strong and stable. There had been some whispered reports that Takasugi herself had come into contact with Tova, and considering Kiriko was the only one hiding the secret of her joyous confrontation with the man she wasn't entirely sure Takasugi would still be in one piece. This all bore looking into, and Kiriko set off for the young woman's lab with a speedy gait.
Arriving quickly at her destination, Kiriko rapped her knuckles against the door, momentarily forgetting her new position and reverting back to old manners. “Takasugi-san?” she called out, her voice lifting in inquiry. She could sense the other spirit inside the building, but her senses were still too imprecise to tell her in what kind of state the woman was in. She would have to rely on old fashion methods and ask the girl to sit down and talk with her.
