Karakura was a strange little place in Japan. As a suburb of the capital city Tokyo, it received a fairly large amount of foot traffic on a daily basis; but that in itself wasn't what made the city unique. Quite a few suburbs of Tokyo received large amounts of foot traffic – or whatever the Humans called it now. Karakura Town just happened to be the current spiritual capital of the entire mortal realm. It was an infamous title for a city to hold, but also one that was temporary. Theoretically, the capital city could change several times in a decade depending on the flow of mortal spiritualists. At the moment, a large majority happened to be dwelling in the Tokyo area. And where spiritualists gathered en masse, so did the Hollows. That in turn led to the Shinigami following suite in order to protect the citizenry from the mindless beasts. It was a cycle all too familiar to the maroon haired woman. She had once been a part of it herself. Or was she still a part of it? It felt like eons had passed since her last purification of a Hollow. ‘I wonder if it even matters anymore. The Gotei Six should be able to maintain the balance on their own. They've managed to handle it for this long without me.’ It wasn’t as if a single Shinigami could make that much of a difference. That would certainly be disastrous if they were to pass away from old age, disease, or in the midst of combat.
’They’ll get by without us, Ai. Shinigami have been maintaining the balance prior to you joining their ranks.’ The woman slowly rolled her bright maroon eyes before she half-jokingly replied to the Spirit. ‘Yes, but Seiretei lost a prodigy when we left for Hueco Mundo. It’s not as if someone else has come along to take up the mantle of Grand Kidō Chief.’ Libera softly sighed. ‘Keep telling yourself that and in no time at all even that pink-haired girl we met in the Forbidden library will have surpassed you in the demon arts.’
Ai’s body twitched in aggravation at the snide remark. She couldn't allow for that to happen. If there was anything left for Ai to be proud of at all it was her skill in Hadō and Bakudō. Maybe she could take a day or two out of her uneventful schedule to go back to the basics. Being out of practice when performing a particular spell could prove to be disastrous. Academy students that received any Kidō training were very familiar with that exact consequence. Luckily for them, their spells didn’t contain enough power to destroy a large swath of land if they did end up detonating in the palm of their hands. In fact, yes, she would take a few days to brush up on her Kidō knowledge, just in case. That would soothe her worries, at least for now. The woman still had to decide where to go next. Staying in Karakura Town for more than a few days was bad form for a Shinigami on the run. She couldn't be found wandering around a place like this. A Shinigami stood out too much amongst the crowds. Wandering the town’s outskirts like she was now certainly didn’t help, either.
Sitting on a cold metal bench for a brief reprieve, Ai’s maroon eyes wandered to a distant street lamp. Gently flickering, the woman’s gaze momentarily dropped to the slick cement sidewalk. Something didn’t feel right. Pondering the matter, her eyes hot back up in alarm. Someone else was here. “And who would you happen to be?”
