Everybody fudges a little. On taxes, on agreements, or on forms; that's just how life is. And on BG, sometimes people fudge their GP just a little bit--mainly by including others' words in their word count totals. A little bit of that is fine. Not only is copying and adapting part of becoming a better writer, but there's also some occasions when using another's words is genuinely important and worth GP. So this is just a public service announcement:
be fair.
Don't worry too much about keeping your own writing separate from others, but do try to keep from copying whole conversations at once if it can be avoided. On this site we don't have many real offenders but we're going to be a little more careful about this in the future, just to make sure no one's fudging too much. If you're one of those people we've got our eyes on, we'll be contacting you in the next couple days and asking you to tone it down a little bit.
For those of you who have problems making conversations work without copying, we have a couple suggestions. Try completely knocking out the other's words and working around that. Write about facial expressions, tics, stressed concepts and everything that makes normal conversation contain so much meaning. Next work up to just including the important parts of speech, just the words or half-sentences that really resonate. At this point you should have a good idea of what's important and what's not--just remember, there are times for when no words, all words or halfway are appropriate. Practice makes perfect.
For the rest of you, keep on keeping on!
Thank you everyone for making this site the great place it is.

To further explain, we've noticed a trend on BG of people using other's dialogue in their posts. In moderation, and on occasion, this can be fine. Doing it repeatedly, and in large chunks, is something we're discouraging.
In accordance with our policy of not punishing players for things that had no clear rule this is not a GP Dock of anyone.
