Jun walked steadily and briskly through the streets of the Rukongai. Despite all the responsibilities someone in his position had Jun somehow managed to find a few hours free this afternoon. A cancelled meeting with Central 46 had allotted him a moment of reprieve that he had not experienced often since taking the job so many years ago. Not that Jun was annoyed by his busy schedule. The shinigami knew that all the countless hours he spent slaving over paperwork or checking in on the duties of his captains offered a reward that was crucial for the survival of Soul Society. If there were more hours in the day Jun would simply use them fulfilling more duties. His dedication to Soul Society was unshakeable and it was part of the reason why he had been nominated for the position in the first place. However, just because Jun was extremely passionate about his job didn’t mean that he didn’t appreciate the rare occasion where he could relax and ignore the responsibilities of his demanding position for a while. It is what brought him out to the Rukongai today. The place was just so far away from all of Jun’s duties. There were no family within the Rukongai to bother him with formalities, no paperwork, no imminent threat that had to be addressed. The Rukongai was just ordinary people trying to live an ordinary life.
Jun was just hoping to spend a few hours waltzing around the Rukongai before retiring back to his office for some late night paperwork and tea. If Jun got lucky he might even get a chance to mingle with some of the local residents. Jun understood that there were some neighborhoods within the Rukongai going through desperate times and the idealist in him was doing everything in his power to reach out to those neighborhoods and help lift them up from the violence and poverty. It was not an easy task and certainly not objective number one in the eyes of Central 46 who were more concerned with the safety of the nobles, the royal family, and the threat of hollow. Jun of course sympathized with all those things, but he felt that it was the people of the Rukongai who needed them the most now. However, with his limited resources there was only so much he could accomplish in a short amount of time. Jun would have to play the long game, which wasn’t too hard for someone who had already lived a thousand years. In order to keep hope alive Jun very much approved and even encouraged shinigami to make friends with the local residents and to visit family if they had some. Jun didn’t want the people of the Rukongai to think the shinigami had forgotten them.
Walking down the street it quickly donned on Jun that he had not walked amongst the local residents in a very long time. A century or so back he had participated in a parade, but that had really been the last time he had managed to get away from the walls separating the Rukongai from Seireitei. This realization became immediately obvious by the reaction of the residents. The people gave him a wide berth, some perhaps out of fear while others out of respect. However, whether they were scared or not all came to see the Captain Commander. As Jun walked he took note of adults standing at doorways or peering through windows while children clambered behind stands and adults to get the best view of Jun without being too much out in the open. Jun would have been quiet excited if someone had walked over to him and tried to have an actual conversation, but he could understand their trepidation. He would not force anybody into a conversation they were not interested in. Instead Jun continued to walk forward occasionally nodding his head to various citizens as he passed.
