Once there was a way To get back homeward.
Satine slipped through the divisions, her thoughts racing, but she felt calmer then ever. It was surprising how easy it had been to get into the seritei. All she had to do was pull on her old uniform and her old outfit, and then cover up her head with a hood and she had been fine. Because of her mastery of hiding her own rietsu, as every division two captain should be able to, it had been easy to slip past the dozing guards. She was almost disappointed really, as she had been ready for a fight. Not that she was here for that. Her plan was to get some things from her office, her old office, she corrected herself, and get her best friend, and her kibble. She was not ready yet to face Aros, still being a bit weak from her other self's attack. Even now, her shoulder was beginning to burn.
The only reason she was making this trip now was because she knew that soon it would be too late, and everyone would know what she had become. Even if she was unaware herself. The comfort of having her haori back on was almost too delicious, and she decided that she would have to wear it more often. She had forgotten the powerful feeling of wearing it, and all the little pockets she had sewn inside. Before she had been able to disguise herself, she had to wash it very thoroughly, as there was a lot of her dried blood on it. The thought made her shiver, she had been too close to dying that day, even if she had come out on top. Even then, she wasn't sure if she had at all.
She jumped from tree to tree, feeling that old comfort of the tallness and strength of the evergreens that littered the Soul Society. A feeling of homesickness washed over her, starting from her toes and working it's way up. And suddenly she wanted to go to the fifth division to find and retrieve Artix Von Creg, slinging him over her shoulder along with her dog. But she couldn't and she knew that. She had something to do, and she was going to complete this mission. She decided to go to her offices first, to find anything that could help the Soul Society find her location. She also wanted to get some personal items, such as her hand mirror, and a necklace she was fond of. Because no matter what she was now, they were still hers.
The lights were off in the large room, and she smirked, enjoying her luck. Feeling around for rietsu, she only felt an old friend of her's, a sharp pang going through her heart to ricochet off her lungs. She took a deep breath, trying to remember her duty. She would make no contact with the girl, although the memory of watching this girl grow in her squad made her squeeze her eyes shut tight in pain. If there was another thing that she regretted about her transformation, it was about leaving her behind. She had begun to see her as a student, teaching her over the years how to hide her rietsu properly, and how to sneak around the seritei for over three days without being caught. A wave of fondness and longing fell through her, but instead of responding, she gritted her teeth and broke into her office.
The open window created a draft of air, making a couple papers fly. She sat on the sill for a moment, stunned. Her large ego had told her that they could not find a replacement so fast, but her heart knew that after the first week of her disappearance, they already had a new captain running things. She slipped off, the quietly walking over to the desk, opening a drawer. Her necklace sat inside it, reverently laid upon one of her old reports. She was almost surprised at how thoughtfully it had been put there. Opening another drawer, she pulled out some hair ribbons that she would no longer need, and a thick waist ribbon that she could still use. Ponderously, she began to glance at the newer reports, falling back into her old habit of checking them as soon as she walked in the door.
But then something caught her attention, a silver envelope sitting nicely on the corner of the desk. She opened it, as it was already, and pulled it out to read. Her eyes widened in first surprise, and then fear. It was essentially a letter to the newly appointed captain explaining how the old captain had died, blood found everywhere in an old warehouse, and a trace of her old rietsu lingering behind. At least they hadn't said she had deserted, but at the same time she was upset that anyone could think that she would die so easily. It would almost have been better to say she had betrayed the society. Putting the letter back carefully, she noticed other little changes in the office, such as the addition of a few photographs on the far wall.
Rather then go to study them however, she picked up everything that she came for, and jumped up onto the sill to look out over the division two gardens. A cool breeze wafted past her, and she couldn't help feeling a terrible sense of loss, of never being able to see this sight again. Of being an enemy, and presumed dead by the Soul Society. She was officially back to square one. And suddenly she felt that old anger come roaring back at her just as it did whenever she thought about it. But it was time to go and get Kya, and then go. Stuffing everything into the pockets in her haori, she touched a mark beside the window, one made when she had bashed her head against the wall. Smiling, she caressed it, and then got ready to jump.
