It was her first time in the human world after the devastation of the Invasion. Cooped up in her office Kiriko had tried to forget the scent of smoke, the toppled buildings, the crater where Karakura had once stood. She had succeeded for a while, losing herself in the reorganization of her Division, in appointing a Lieutenant, in seeing everything to working order. With Sakamoto still unaccounted for Kiriko had needed to see the imprint her friend had left on the human world. Had needed further emotional goading when it came time to send reconnaissance teams after Sakamoto, to give the order to sift through her friend's office and search her personal belongings. It felt like spying, never a word she had shirked away from before. Somehow with Sakamoto the duty was tainted, as if she was overseeing something secret and hidden. Everyone demanded answers though, it wasn't just her personal vendetta against a betrayal. All of Soul Society was clamoring to find out what had gone wrong, why Sakamoto had caused the explosion that had ruined more of Karakura Town then the invading Hollow forces had even touched.
The last time she had seen her friend, they were miles away from the detonation site. Kiriko owed it to herself to look at that damage full on, to understand and grasp what it was her comrade had done. It was one thing to read reports, to categorize the damage as money and the man power it would take to repair it. It took a different sort of strength to view the catastrophe herself. To look upon what had once been buildings and see only ash and charred ground. How many humans had died that day? Was Sakamoto's death count finally higher then her own sins?
Kiriko shook her head fiercely, trying to ignore the stinging in her eyes. It was just the soot in the air, she told herself. Even after all this furor she was no closer to knowing why. Why her friend had felt this was her only course of action. Why the Hollow inside of her had taken over. When she'd asked, Sakamoto had only giggled. As if the answer was so obvious, so clear. Kiriko couldn't stop thinking, rolling situations over in her head. But no matter how hard she ruminated nothing was clear, nothing was polished.
Hahaue stirred in the silence that Aneue had created with her sudden disappearance. The Inner Hollow was normally quiet, relying on emotions instead of words as a cooling effect against Kiriko's own hot temper. “It should not matter why, Kiriko. She is your friend. You should support her. You should be there for her, no matter her personal choices. That is the right thing to do. That is what friendship means Kiriko, don't forget.”
Kiriko tried to ignore those words. When Hahaue had first appeared it was like a blessing, but now that she spent most of her time contemplating what to do about Sakamoto the Hollow was more often heard chastising Kiriko. It didn't matter what was right, although Kiriko wanted desperately to agree. Her own blood covered hands would not allow that peace and happiness, her own ties to Soul Society could not survive if she allowed her friend's betrayal to go unanswered. For the future. That was her new motto. For the future she would do what needed to be done. Even if it was painful, even if it was dark and ugly, even if it meant killing Sakamoto with her own hands.
For the future. Why didn't that phrase seem like enough?
Turning smoothly to the right she realized that the devastation here had called in a lot more predators then she had first thought. Hollows lurked around every corner. They had come to feed on the desperation and decay of Karakura, on the newly spiritually awakened humans. This was a buffet now, where once it had been an oasis of Shinigami protection. That thought sickened her, and the moment she sensed a Hollow nearby she had decided on her path. Kiriko was not really supposed to be in the human world right now, but at the very least she could hand in her status report with a few more Hollows given their release to Hell or Soul Society depending on their nature.
Shunpoing closer to the threat she had felt earlier, Kiriko paused in what had once been a wide street as she looked around the rubble. There was something here, lurking, but even though she had felt the Hollow's reiatsu so strongly mere moments before somehow it had faded away. Tension rippled up her arms as she stared into the murky darkness. Where? A lone set of footsteps drew her attention, but it also drew more then just Kiriko's, as a large snarl erupted from the air around them and a giant Hollow leapt from the shadows towards the walking form of a human girl. Kiriko knew she wouldn't be fast enough to get between the two in time, not without the aid of her Shunko. It was supposed to be a secret but she hadn't been keeping it very well, not with Sakamoto running around like she had been. The decision didn't even take a second to make, and suddenly Kiriko was wreathed in dark purple energy that crackled as it bit at the sky.
Her Shunko aura bled into her own limbs, the physical manifestation of her Kido energy giving her body that much more speed and strength as Kiriko leapt into action. Her movements seemed to blur as the air whipped past her, and suddenly she was there. Standing in front of the oncoming Hollow Kiriko thrust her body off the pavement and into the air, aiming a powerful sideways kick at the creature's face. She needed to reverse his momentum, send him away from the fragile target behind her. If he was as fast as she'd seen though, this wasn't going to be a simple one-hit kill. Kiriko felt the impact of her foot, and immediately curled her upper body so that she could flip downward and aim a fist for the thing's skull. Her punches were always stronger then her kicks, it was an unhappy truth, and Kiriko put all she had into the attack. Purple lights glittered and rose up around her like flames as her Shunko aura burst in a Hado explosion that succeeded in reinforcing her hit and sending the Hollow tumbling away.
Landing lightly on her feet she stared, trying to pierce the shadows the creature had fallen into. She reached out with her senses, probing the air between them for any sense of life. Of struggling breaths. But there was nothing, only silence. Drawing her Zanpakutou, Kiriko stepped forward on silent feet as the blade chilled her hands. Walking into the shadows was like having a bucket of water dumped over her head, she knew this was the most dangerous time. When an opponent was out of sight, and cornered. Her eyes caught sight of the target quickly though, a shuddering heap wreathed in smoking flesh. There was no time to waste, she flash stepped to his side and slammed the blade of Aneue into his mask, splitting it in two and sending the souls trapped inside on.
Kiriko was not one to forget her settings, even in the middle of victory, and she turned slowly to peer out of the shadows that the human who had been this Hollow's idea of its next meal. If she was lucky, the girl would be too weak to have even sensed her, or seen her form. If she was very lucky, she could just walk away without being noticed. But those eyes that looked back at her seemed to meet her own directly, and Kiriko knew with a sigh that she had been spotted.
