Kiriko looked out her window, gazing past the trailing willow tree and the koi pond to the well placed sundial. It was nearly midday, in any normal work atmosphere people took breaks at this time of the day to eat lunch and decompress. She had never understood that luxury, but today it was almost tempting. The mountain of paperwork was settling down quite nicely, perhaps due to the all nighter she had pulled. Kiriko had fully intended on going to sleep last night, had even taken a long hot bath to calm her nerves, but when she was about to lay down on her futon she suddenly realized that she was afraid to fall asleep. Her, afraid! The issue wasn't eased any by the distance she had put between her Zanpakutou's sheath and her bed with Aneue sitting all the way across the room on a desk. Even so, the unease from her previous night's dreams was hard to fight against.
The first dream she had forced herself to ignore, to put aside as a misnomer. The second dream though... If Aneue was indeed playing mind games, she was going about it in a disturbingly more articulate manner then ever before. The dream had started out fine. She had been visiting with Takasugi and seeing just how well the girl was doing, when suddenly her body had jerked without her control and she had drawn her sword. The mess she had made of Takasugi was enough to haunt her waking hours, but the words at the end had been worse. Aneue's taunting laughter, and the painful reminder of who the sword thought was in control.
Except while conscious Kiriko couldn't get the smallest peep from her sword spirit, and the disconnected dreams made no sense if Aneue wasn't trying to usurp mastery of the body they shared. That was the strange thing, because it was still early enough to convince herself these were just dreams born of an overactive imagination. Just nightmares from her stressful days. But if she'd gone to sleep last night, and had a third dream like the other two, then perhaps it wouldn't have been so simple to label them normal. Then perhaps Kiriko would have to start thinking about what it meant that her Zanpakutou Spirit was receding from her touch but overpowering her dreams.
The words from the previous night still echoed in her ears, like a faint reminder. Or perhaps a warning. Hahaue preached control, forgiveness, love. All the things Kiriko wished she could let herself have. And yet it said a lot about her soul that she felt the reminders from Aneue about her true nature were far more easily believable. Somehow having Aneue warn her of the blood from her past and her inability to take care of the people she was pledged to felt a lot more familiar, even if it was couched in the terrifying terms of power and domination. Aneue, or her dream version of Aneue, had ended the nightmare the same as the one before. Her foot on Kiriko's throat, pressing down slowly, slowly, until finally she couldn't even hear those raging words of dominion. But the ones she had heard, the ones she remembered, were stark enough to make Kiriko worry.
She had hoped that after her confrontation with Aneue in her mind that everything would finally start to be better now. That they would be able to recognize their own needs and work together. Even if these dreams weren't from Aneue, the fact that her sword spirit could see them was enough of a wound to their working relationship, and perhaps why Aneue had gone silent. She was so easy to hurt, to miff, it wouldn't be that surprising if the Zanpakutou was simply pulling a temper tantrum and exerting power the only way she could now that Hahaue was here to balance out her ways.
She didn't have time to worry about herself though. Kiriko slid the last bit of paperwork away, pressing a manila folder shut, and got to her feet. Things were boiling too fast, and while her leadership of the Nibantai was smoothing over the weaknesses she herself had plagued them with it still didn't make up for the turmoil of a new Captain Commander and an entirely different Captain structure. She had been meaning to deal with that issue, the strange reality that had befallen her. Somehow while she was sleeping Tsukimiya-taichou had given the command over to Ine-taichou, and not just that but the man of his own volition had named her his successor. Kiriko couldn't help but think he was playing a game with her, trying to get something from her with flattery and bribery. It was stupid, he should have realized with their last meeting that Kiriko didn't take well to “guidance.”
She had tried ignoring the issue, but it seemed he was intent on leaving her as his heir. At least, in the last few months Ine hadn't revoked that status due to her avoiding him. Kiriko was too tired now to put up with mind games from two people in her life, and she finally had the free time that had been her excuse before not to confront him. All roads led to the First Division, right? Shrugging, Kiriko departed her office and the Nibantai home entirely as she walked towards the First. She should plan out what she was going to say. That would be the smart thing, the right thing. But Kiriko was just unnerved and angry enough from her sleepless night that istead she focused on just placing her feet in front of the other. Lost in that methodical action she found herself at the First's compound in no time at all.
It was bustling, for once the place actually appeared lived in. Kiriko didn't want to complement Ine on anything though, so she held her mental tongue and stepped into the lobby. A young woman behind a desk beckoned her over, and Kiriko quietly passed on her message. The Captain Commander was a busy man, but hopefully he would find the time to meet with her for a few minutes. If not, she would have to drop in on him at a more personal time. Perhaps the schematics of the Ichibantai were still the same as the ones she had memorized as a recruit, it shouldn't prove that hard to find his quarters. Even if they had changed, she wasn't a part of the Second for just any reason. Still, Kiriko knew that an official meeting would make the conversation that much more apt to be clean and fruitful. She was too easily angered around this man, it wouldn't do to put herself in a worse position.
