Soft footsteps sounded through the forests of Rukongai District 3, Hokutan. A small, blond girl picked her way through the bushes, struggling to keep her balance while stepping around thorny vines and carrying a worn cloth sack on her back. The sleeves of her simple green yukata kept getting caught on branches, and she had to stop every few seconds to untangle herself, but she pressed on nonetheless with a small scowl adorning her delicate features. Hopping over a particularly large rock she let out a small cheer of triumph, only to quickly trip over the long katana secured clumsily at her waist.
"Damn it!" Kumiko Kirkland gave a cry of frustration as she picked herself up for the tenth time that day. With a scowl she scrambled to her knees and tried to re-tie the katana into a more secure position, but it was hard to even keep her balance on the uneven forest floor. "You know what? Screw this, I'm going back to town until I get some actual directions to this stupid Shinigami Academy thing!" Finally she gave up and gathered everything - bag and sword - into her arms and hurried towards the edge of the forest, ignoring the scratches forming on her arms.
Eventually Kumiko made her way out of the forest, disgruntled and with leaves stuck in her long blond hair. With a huff she dropped her belongings onto a nearby bench and pulled the pins and ribbons out of her hair. For the next ten minutes or so she focused on tidying her appearance, re-braiding and pinning her braid to the back of her head again. Kumiko then looked around for anyone that looked even remotely close to being a shinigami - god knows she could use some help.
Since the death of her caretaker, the young soul had been diligently getting ready to head for shinigami academy and attend this blasted school her caretaker wanted her to attend so much. But alas she had no luck - all she knew was that she had to head for District One first and go from there, but so far Kumiko was hopelessly lost. Someone had once told her to go through the forest if she wanted to go to the upper districts, but now Kumiko wondered if they had been lying. She had no luck with the forest. With a sigh she closed her eyes and reached for her katana - maybe that annoying spirit would be some help?
But it seemed as if this was not her lucky day, as her normally talkative spirit chose to remain silent too. It was so frustrating - her zanpakutou Tsuta Tsuru tended to chatter at time when she wanted a break, but when Kumiko actually wanted to talk she wouldn't speak. At her current level she couldn't even communicate with her zanpakutou unless the spriti itself willed it so she was virtually powerless. With a groan Kumiko buried her face in her hands - maybe she'll get lucky and a shinigami will pass by...maybe...
