Kiriko felt her body shudder, the meat of her limbs weakening under the force she was pushing through them. It wasn't enough. Nothing ever was. She needed to be better, faster, stronger, tougher. She needed all of that if she was going to follow through on her promise to Sakamoto. If she was going to lead her division forward. If she was going to help bring about a brighter future. She couldn't just sit and stagnate, not when her own innate talents were drying up like puddles in the sun. Aneue had abandoned her, Hahaue was silent more often then not – the cool sense of disappointment flooding her body like the flick of a lash. She had no back ups, no alternatives. If Kiriko really was going to kill Sakamoto, if she really was going to be the strongest most equipped Nibantai member, if she really was going to be prepared for all the challenges ahead, she had to be better. Not just good enough, not just powerful, not just scraping by. All of the obstacles in her path, all of her enemies, were so far beyond exceptional that her own meager ratings would no longer serve. Kiriko was tired of losing, of being defeated. The next time she fought Tova she would wreck him, and when it came time for the fateful battle between herself and Sakamoto she would end her life with the type of mercy her friend deserved. A clean blow. A swift blow. A proper end.
Lately the mere mention of Shunko had ruffled her feathers. She knew, down in her bones, what Sakamoto was using their creation for. The dark deeds that were being lit up by a Shunko aura. She knew just how treacherous that path was. If anyone found out what it was that Sakamoto was doing, the very nature and teachings of Shunko would fade from the history books. Kiriko could not let that happen. She might have taught a handful of people her trade, but she would not rest until Shunko was the fully developed weapon to end all weapons of anyone who wanted to take down a Hollow and preserve the balance of souls. She would not stop until it was perfect. Kiriko could not allow Sakamoto to taint her gift to the world. Her legacy.
She knew there was another step out there, a logical conclusion to the entire process. Kiriko had been using Shunko often enough that it was second nature, or as close to it as one could get. But that wasn't what she really wanted, not just ease and familiarity of use. Kiriko wanted full mastery of her art. Right now she could utilize any mechanic, but she dreamed of something more. Shunko as it was had a limited scope. The brunt of the technique was to create and enhance damage from a blow, even though she knew very well that a Kido based aura should also have defensive properties built in. Shunko was based on the principle of taking your spiritual energy and flushing it in and around your body to enhance everything, not just strength. So why was that the only way it had been used so far?
Could there really be another step? Another avenue of implementation? Her nerves buzzed with the ideas. Kiriko had bottled up all of these concerns for so long, but they had to be addressed. There was a secret folder in her desk, kept under lock and key and a fierce bakudo barrier, that contained all of her theoretical musings on Shunko. Kiriko had already written out so many ideas. She had managed to achieve quite a few through arduous practice and experimentation. But the one line she had never managed to cross was a full application of Shunko's theoretical tenets. It should be possible to push further. To truly embody her aura, to pull it into not just the air around oneself, but ones very flesh and blood.
Pulling a punch mid-step, Kiriko stared at the scuffed up dummy she had been unleashing her anger upon. A normal punch was never enough. She shouldn't even delude herself with the thought that her body frame could ever hold the right type of power naturally to unleash devastation. In all honesty Shunko was all that she had. The only way Kiriko had managed to claw her way up the ladder into a position of strength and infamy. She couldn't allow the boundaries she wasn't even conscious of creating limit her here.
