He had read the Kanji and the runes over well in excess of one hundred times by now. Two hundred? Three hundred? Maybe more…
Weeks of preparation had left him with no doubt that he could execute the technical components required to format the Kido. He knew the words, clearly, concisely, at a level approaching rote but there was no way in the three worlds that proper execution could be either relied on or planned for. At least not without a test.
The Hado didn’t have a number. This wasn’t unusual, as a lot of folks had developed Kido that only got pet names or were never codified by the Kido Corps. And there weren’t only 99 Hado, the number merely rated the complexity required to control both the casting and the effect, not to mention the fact that a Kido could certainly exist being worthy of a number north of 99.
The book he had found in the depths of the Forbidden Library was likely intended to stay hidden forever, or at least until it had been properly vetted and refined. But there was always the possibility that it was a dark secret, buried amongst the volumes, that the penning author merely hoped to lose to time ; a secret they could not bring themselves to destroy, but they could not bring themselves to use.
Tokiyo’s trip into the folds of knowledge within that library had revealed a great many things that he had suspected to be truthful, but had neither the opportunity nor the evidence to prove ; The Soul Society was hiding weapons not just from its enemies, but from itself. Perhaps the adage of ‘not being ready for the knowledge’ was deemed to be applicable by those whom had unlocked these dark spells, but Tokiyo was more inclined to bet there merely lacked the conviction to see to their proper use. Rather convenient.
The setting? A large expanse of land between two foothills several miles outside of the Rukongai. Maybe several isn’t an accurate representation. A couple dozen was more likely. Whatever the distance, the important thing to note is that there wasn’t any housing or settlement within miles and miles and...that was best when dealing with the unknown. But more importantly, a distinct lack of witnesses was best when dealing with the Forbidden.
He had arranged a large circle on a flat part of the plain, dotted with runes intended to offer stability to the area and anything cast on it. Would it be enough?
He had no idea.
Whatever safety measures Tokiyo could have taken, he did his best to do. Setting up a fortified bunker a good half mile away from the ‘site’ was a nice start, but realistically it might mean little except a second or two to think things over if the spell went south.
Most Forbidden Kido came at the cost of a sacrifice of some sort in order to fuel it, thus rendering the idea of ‘protecting’ yourself from it rather silly. Yet Tokiyo had not found any true cost associated with this spell other than the idea that it would be implicitly difficult to control, and had substantial, if not catastrophic implications if used. Didn’t require one of his limbs. Didn’t require an enemy’s. Hell, the spell didn’t even appear to require an enemy at all! So what did it need? A lot of space.
A lot of space you didn’t want to be there any more.
Tokiyo spread his stance, planting his feet firmly into the dried dirt of the remote plain ; now was the time. Put up or shut up.
He had never done something like this before, and he was about to cross the line from thinking to doing. A transgression that you cannot take back no matter how much you hope or wish. You damn well better be sure when you pull that trigger. This time? He was sure.
Looking within himself he dove into the bottom of the well of power, that familiar place, from which he drew his strength for the Kido he had come to rely so intrinsically on. The familiar tension began building within his feet and lower legs, letting him know his soul was alive with power and it yearned to be unleashed. He extended his arms in front of him, waist high, and put his hands together with the palms facing outward. Using his thumbs for a guideline, he spread them apart slightly, framing the spot he wanted the Hado to strike.
The words had to be perfect.
They had to be confident.
They had to be clear.
God himself had to hear him speak, and understand the words. Nothing short of divine intercession would guarantee his success.
“A second sun, o monks, impermanent, non-eternal.”
A small spark of energy, timid and weak, like kindling sparked to life in between a camper’s hands. It formed in the center of the rune circle with a soft pulse and opened upward and out, blooming like lotus petals, with an ethereal, white energy.
“Vanish, cease to be, a third sun appears and dry up, the ponds and streams.”
The flower ejected a small, white-yellow ball of light that appeared to be rotating slowly, throwing off a fuzzy aura of pale light on the surrounding area. The runes inlaid in the ground surrounding it began to come to life, glowing with reds, and blues, and greens, sparking to life and purpose to bolster the stability of the Hado.
“Fourth sun, with the bayed rivers and lakes, constituent things! Emancipate from your surly bonds.”
As the sphere rose into the air, it began to pulse softly as if it were breathing. Rhythmically, quietly, even from the several yards distance Tokiyo has established he could feel and hear its power humming...speaking to him of its strength in the frighteningly subtle way. The sort of way that needed no grand fanfare or display of prowess ; the sort of way that just...destroyed you.
“The six fan palms, monarch of mountains, blow your smoke and fire. Neither ashes nor soot remains, shine from the Sixth Sun.”
Rising higher into the sky, the sphere began to rotate faster and grow brighter, gaining size and flattening ever so slightly.
“Great Earth, fire and flame, rise and become one mass. Burn. Consume. Perish.”
The words finished and the atmosphere darkened with energy, arcing lashed of power flying off of the orb. The runes beneath it strained to contain its power and the rate at which their glow was increasing could easily be considered...alarming. Tokiyo began to, wisely, back off. Slowly. Carefully. As if stepping too loud would set it off. Maybe it would?
His eyes were locked with the Hado and beads of sweat had formed on his brow, partially out of stress and partially from the heat being shed by this monstrosity. He cocked his head sideways. Did he just see what he thought he saw?
It started to fall.
Oh god.
It was a miniscule drop but it was more than noticeable, given the orb’s height.
The only thing on his mind at that moment was being nowhere near it when it landed.
Nowhere.
