A strange fusty odor entered the child’s nostrils the moment she awoke. Her eyes blinked a few times, trying to adjust to the light that was pouring through the hole in the roof above her. After a few moments, she realized that she must have fallen through the roof, crashing into the barn. A light headache caused her to grin and gently massage her forehead. There was a nasty bump on the side of her head, with a little stream of blood leaking towards the edge of her partly torn up sweater-, once white, now covered in mud and straw. Had the impact been strong enough for her to lose her consciousness? Slightly disorientated, Kasumi pushed off from the hay, wondering how long she had been asleep. Hopefully it wasn’t for too long, though it didn’t really matter. She was here to find Alex, time wasn’t an issue, Kasumi had plenty of it. As long as she would reach her goal in the end, everything would be worth it. Clenching her hands into fists, the white haired child got up, stumbling over the muddy path in the middle of the barn, that was leading outside. The blood felt sticky between her fingers, causing her to frown lightly. At least she hadn’t fallen on the hard ground, though it would have been better if she had simply walked out of the portal. Why did the god damn thing have to open up in the air?! Disgruntled about her ‘landing’ the girl dwelled over the road, leaving the old shanty somewhere behind her. It took her a few hundreds of yards before she realized that her shoes were gone. Unsure about how that had happened, Kasumi hoped to find something different to wear. Her pants were torn up, the right side ended at her knee, being way too short. There was something wrong, but she couldn’t lay her finger on it just yet. Continuing the journey toward the houses in the distance, the girl started to make a plan. First she would need to find someone who could tell her where she was. If her thoughts on this place got confirmed, then .. Then what? She didn’t even know how ‘big’ this realm was. Her sensing abilities sucked, and she wasn’t even sure if Alex still looked the same. Stubbornly, she refused to let go. A bitter taste spread through her mouth, causing her to swallow, hard. It didn’t help. There was a lump in her throat again, and her blue eyes threatened to spill more tears.
Calm.. cam down.
She had to stay calm. With the panic slowly subduing, Kasumi was able to breathe once again. A trembling breath left her lips, before she walked into a random street. Or that’s how she labeled the wide path in front of her. People were wandering through the sandy area, some of them were carrying things like baskets with clothes or food, while some others were holding chunks of wood or jugs with water. What was this place? This didn’t look like.. anything she had expected to see. Bumping into a stranger, the girl curled her lips into an apologetic smile. Though the only thing she got back was a glare. The man’s dark eyes were full of hate and annoyance, catching the girl off guard. Why was he so angry? A wave of sadness rocked through her again, and she realized that this would be way harder than what she had imagined. Barefooted children ran past her, adults seemed to come and go, not paying any attention to her standing in the middle of the road. Why would they? The girl wasn’t striking in any way, with her muddy and torn clothes, bare feet and straw jutting out of her hair here and there. She looked like one of them. She looked like she belonged there. And while Kasumi didn’t mind her looks, she quickly figured that nobody would be willing to help her. Suddenly a rough push sent her flying toward the ground. Crawling up, she studied her lightly scratched palms, with a few droplets of blood running down her pale skin.
“You’re in the way kiddo!”
Was all that she heard from the one who had pushed her just a moment ago. Angry, Kasumi jumped up, ready to yell at whoever had been so rude to her, but there were too many people walking by. There was no way of finding out who was guilty, so she let it go. If she got angry, the girl could easily slip and make a mistake. Powers were dangerous and had to be controlled. Alexandra had taught her this. Grinding her teeth together, she ignored the returning bitter taste that filled her mouth. After giving dusting herself off an attempt and immediately giving up on it, the girl walked up to a random man. He was selling something that looked like bread, but wasn’t, and Kasumi hoped that he would be able to answer some of her questions.
“Excuse me, sir, is this .. the Soul Society?”
Motioning with her hands around her, the girl tried to elucidate what she meant by ‘this’. For a short moment he stared down at her, and by the time he spoke, Kasumi’s hands had found their way into her sweater’s pockets. A filthy laugh preceded his explanation, showing his teeth that reminded the girl of dominoes: white with black dots.
“Soul Society you say, yea, the Rukongai, he said, moving closer, allowing his breath to spill over the girl’s face.
you’re new, huh? Come along, you can scrub the floors, I’ll give you some food.”
Seeing how Kasumi backed off, he laughed again.
“Won’t survive on your own around here..
The expression on her face was one of confusion, before it quickly turned into an angry one.
Well.. I offered, your loss. Want to go steal again? Have fun with it, but let me tell you what. The moment they’ll catch you, you’ll be wishing for floors to scrub.”
Too shocked, Kasumi ran, ran from his smelly breath, from his words and from the ruins that were supposed to be houses. Her second wave of panic got interrupted by the child bumping into a bunch of baskets. Having allowed her feet to carry her forward freely, she hadn’t paid any attention to where she had been going.
“Watch out you little brat!”
Rukongai? This was the Rukongai?
Wasn’t that a part of Soul Society, the part that didn’t include the soldiers, the one made for peaceful inhabitants of the Shinigami realm? It was hard to remember Koudai’s exact words but she hadn’t expected this. Stumbling to the side of the road, Kasumi leaned against one of the wooden houses, thinking deeply. Vaguely, she could recall that this place belonged to the ‘common people’. These streets filled with hungry children, citizens clothed in rags and sadness and anger written over their faces, were they really supposed to represent the afterlife? Benevolence seemed to be no part of life, of one’s existence in general. Did the humans that die really come here? To crawl through the dirty streets, sneaking upon each other, stealing from one another in order to survive? She had hoped to find a different world from the one she was living in. A world full of happiness? But of course, that was just too much to be asked.
Everything was rotten.
Wonders didn’t exist.
Meeting Alexandra and being taken in by her had been a wonder, one that didn’t last long. A tiny ball of ice appeared in her hand, crushing it; she felt the cold run through her veins. That was the only certain thing, ice, her ability to create it. With the lump melting in her fist, she walked through the sandy district. There had to be a pool somewhere, a river maybe? These images she was capable of pulling out of the water. They were random; they were unpredictable and sometimes hideous. But she didn’t know what else to do. Taking a look into this place’s history could be a start. Though would it help her? She did not know what time they came from, what part of history they were; neither could she place anyone she saw. The lack of control annoyed her beyond reasoning, causing her to walk faster. By the time that her blue gaze met something she thought to be able to use, the girl was worn out by the endless walking. Grudgingly, she walked into the small pond, feeling the mud suck at her bare feet, which in a way felt suiting after the stones and sand. Once the water hit her hands, she carefully took a look around. No soul was to be seen, and Kasumi relaxed. The closest houses were a few hundred yards behind her, and the trees in front of the pond appeared to be a part of a small forest. The road she had used to get here was empty for now, and the girl closed her eyes, starting to freeze the water around her. Immediately the liquid beneath her palms crystalized, causing the temperature around Kasumi to drop.
