The green hills were completely still, not even the slightest gust of wind dared to disturb their grassy surface. Several crooked trees were sticking out of the turf, throwing long shadows under the morning sun. And under one of them a lone figure was sitting completely still, almost invisible in its black garments. Quite some time passed like that, only once was the inexplicable calmness of the scene broken by a hare, raising its head above the grass, but it was only a moment before the creature, as if realising its mistake, quickly sank back into the ocean of green.
And then suddenly everything came alive- a strong breeze, appearing as if out of nowhere blustered through the grassy blades with a whiz, for a moment making the hillside look as if it were the surface of a sea during a raging storm. The sudden movement scared away some of the crows who had made the crown of one of the lone trees their resting place, sending them flying into the sky with loud croaks. This harsh sound seemed to have quite an effect on the shady figure as it quickly got up on its feet and stepped into the now bright sunlight.
If anybody else had been there at the time, they would have been quite surprised by what they would see- the young man frowning at the sun was nothing else but a Shinigami. It was indeed rare to see one of their kind this far into the Rukongai- the population here was so thinned out that there was scarcely any need for their services. But this one was not on a mission. Picking up his Zanpaktou he had left leaning on the gnarled tree trunk, Ketsueki Ryuu, the third seat of the Fourth division let out a loud sigh and stepped into the waist- high grass, heading towards a small blue spot in the distance that couldn’t be anything else but a large lake.
In fact, this was the last place he was supposed to be. Just a few hours ago Ryuu was carelessly drooling on a desk in the Fourth division lab next to a rather impressive pile of papers when he was struck by a sudden feel of nostalgia. Carefully calculating the pros and cons of just running away Ryuu figured he would probably get scolded. And then he left anyway. It had been such a long time since he hadn’t seen his former home that the young shinigami was starting to forget it. And this was a memory he wasn’t willing to part with.
Making his way through the empty fields with large, confident steps, the black- haired shinigami indulged himself in memories of what now seemed to be one of the happiest times in his life. Back then things seemed so simple- you did whatever you liked, whenever you liked without regard of anything or everyone. But then again, you were an easy target for just about anyone stronger than you. Well, he was strong now. And there was no way he was going to let his life be ruled by somebody else again.
