Kiriko shuffled another report off to the side, one hand massaging her temples as the other fiddled with a form that she should have finished with hours ago. The clarion ache behind her eyes was akin to a thousand bells going off at once. Aneue's little love tap, or perhaps a reminder that she was merely mortal. Informational webs lay across her desk, each carefully plotted piece of knowledge leading to another outcome, a new movement, a choice and a chance. There was so much to prepare for as the Captain of the Second. With her finger on the pulse of all three realms, Kiriko had to be the one looking out for and managing the flow of intelligence. And with most of it top-secret these days, it was up to her to go through each vital report and find the bigger picture.
Not that she wouldn't have done that even if these weren't such trying times. But the responsibility was laying heavy on her shoulders, today in particular. Kiriko had expected the humans to come to Soul Society, had even predicted a date. But she had been to unsure of her information network and had not reported the information to Ine. That was a failure in the chain of command, and she knew it. Knew it with the mind-drumming backlash of guilt that had wrapped around her ever since. If she had told him, maybe then they would have handled that whole fiasco a bit better. With more aplomb.
The information in her hands today was another such potential powder keg. This time though, her reluctance in sharing it stemmed from self-preservation. Miyazawa Ai was a powerful Shinigami. A useful Shinigami. And yet she was wasting her talents on the run because of a stupid, and near ancient, ruling as to her status as a rogue. Kiriko had offered to speak for Miyazawa, to reach out to the new Captain Commander, and yet the woman had refused. Citing time and other concerns, when in reality Kiriko knew she was merely afraid. Afraid to come back and see how much had changed in her absence. Afraid to confront the idiot's who blamed her for Gilgamesh and Mitsutaka.
Kiriko had sat on that meeting for some time now. But with all of the recent events it had started to bug her. To irritate her almost like the burrowing of tiny barbs beneath her skin. Miyazawa was strong enough to make a difference here. A real difference. And Soul Society was lacking in true leadership. She could no longer accept the two as mutually nonexclusive facts. If Miyazawa was so afraid of Ine's decision then Kiriko simply wouldn't take no for an answer.
Shoving her chair back, she got to her feet and glared at the tiny little scrap of paper that had started all of this mess. A simple report. One line only.
Miyazawa Ai has been spotted in Karakura Town.
She trusted the man who'd sent it to her, and also trusted that the chances of her plans coming to fruition were swiftly darkening the longer she loitered in her office. Throwing her haori across her shoulders, Kiriko looked back one last time before striding for the First Division. She was going to force Ine to see reality even if it took knocking some heads together. Chinda Kiriko backed down for no one. Not when it was the safety of Soul Society on the line.
