She sighed. It was a defeated sigh because why? Well, that's because back to Japan she went, back to Japan, they said. Unwilling, unwilling to be away from her family for an extended period of time but Yugen rejoiced in the separation. Sayuri was like a puppy; there was always some anxiety when she left for the human world. But somehow, the tiny island of Japan felt minutely okay, felt familiar, like she’d been there before—okay, she had been there before on previous posts but this… this felt like more than that. It was inexplicable and she had no reason to feel this way. It was something unshakable, creepy and lurking like in the shadows.
One of the many reasons the Minamoto matriarch disliked returning to Earth. There was always something about it that made her feel uncomfortable. Add in roaming Hollow and Arrancar and all bets were off. Terrifying creatures, they were. Maybe she’d get lucky and avoid any such confrontations this time.
After all, things were going well for once. Sayuri had performed Konso after Konso after Konso—which led her to ask: why were they so many dead people in Japan anyway? It was such a tiny country too! Oh well, she thought with a shrug.
Staring at the excitable teen in front of her—was he still a teen? He was dead after all—she tried to get a word in edgewise to answer his questions but he just wouldn’t shut up!
“What’s the afterlife like?”
“Oh my god, I can’t believe I’m going to the afterlife!”
“Will I become someone like you? Rather, what are you anyway?”
Sayuri’s eyes glazed over to the back of her head. She had already answered these questions like fifty times before. Retention was not the boy’s strong suit. Perhaps a bit rudely, the redhead sighed in exasperation and tapped him on the forehead with the hilt of her Zanpakuto. “Just go and find out for yourself already, okay? Byeeee~” With a relieved smile, Sayuri waved farewell to the spirit still mouthing off question after question at a million miles per minute.
And she was just so exhausted by now. Was it time to go home yet?
With another sigh, the redhead happened by a large television screen plastered onto the side of a building in a Times Square sort of setting. Pictured in the forefront was a blond—a very, very pretty blond, she might add—smiling and waving to the cameras, responding to the sea of adoring fans. Who was he, Sayuri almost wanted to ask before noticing something odd about his aura like he was… like he was… spiritually aware?
So they do exist. But of course, Sayuri already knew they existed. After all, how could a mortal child sneak into Soul Society without some level of spiritual awareness? Still, it somehow surprised her even as she prowled the home of humans.
All kinds of humans, some short, some tall, some fat, some in-between, and some… spiritually aware.
Unwitting that the televised montage was prerecorded, the Minamoto matriarch found herself wading into the same set of fans previously seen on screen. Their screams were ear-piercingly shrill and body after body was getting in her way. Sayuri had somewhere to be, you know!
Hitting each hormonal teenaged female to the side cleared a path like the parting sea—but mostly due to the nature of her Shikai.
Do not enter here and let me through, thank you very much.
But the screams kept on getting louder and louder.
“Do you see Aki-sama yet?”
“Can you tell me when you see him?”
“Oh my gosh, I don’t know what to do with myself! Hey, do you think you can pass on a message for me—“
They weren’t even talking to Sayuri but she’d reacted in practice response, “I’m his mother! Who do you think you are?!”
And finally a silence in the crowd. Clueless faces looked around to the source of words. “Did someone just say she was Aki-sama’s mother? Didn’t she—isn’t she, well, you know…”
With a huff, Sayuri finally realised that they couldn’t see her. Quickly flash-stepping to the hidden place of her suit, the redhead rushed back as if she’d never left. In the invisible place was a girl—or rather, a woman with a fiery mane of hair and clear green eyes. Jabbing at the maniacal fans, she snarled, “Yeah, that’s right. Stay back, I said!”
They pressed themselves against the invisible wall, wondering why they couldn’t get through, an otherworldly power they’d never experienced before. But even still, the screams seemed to roar through the sky suddenly. Turning around swiftly saw Sayuri meet eyes with the very ‘Aki-sama’ to whom she claimed motherhood. Jaw dropping to the ground, she pointed and screamed and whined, “Uwaaaaa~ you’re totally prettier than any of my sons! Not fair!”
