Hayate was going to have to die. His ridiculous obsession with ruining Shin was starting to become a real problem. The extra work had been fine, the useless extra busy-work had been annoying, keeping Shin away from as many opportunities as he could manage had been a problem, and now he was simply letting Shin have those, and somehow manipulating them so that he got the worst possible versions of those opportunities. For example, when Shin had applied for another real world excursion Hayate had somehow gotten him stuck in the forests outside of Tokyo. How was that even possible!?
"It wouldn't be if you would just stab him in the heart." And then there was the eternal wisdom and understanding of his zanpakuto spirit to deal with.
"Oh brilliant idea. Let's get accused of murdering a professor!"
"Was that sarcasm? Progress!"
Shin actually smacked himself in frustration. It wasn't like there was anyone to see. Hayate had lead this trip, and he had had Shin and his three teammates split up within minutes, with Shin of course going in the direction with absolutely no detectable reiatsu whatsoever.
"Heads up kid." Of course, that was nearly an hour and several miles ago. It wasn't so surprising that there might be a hollow around by now. It was shaped like a giant preying-mantis, but despite its rather intimidating appearance, its reiatsu was pathetic. It was stupid too. The thing was just walking along the forest floor, only a few meters below Shin, and didn’t even bother to look up.
"Well, it's weak, but it's better than the trees." The spirit pointed out. "Target practice?"
Instead of answering Shin pointed his hand at the giant insect.
“Hado number sixty three…”
“Uh, isn’t that kind of overkill?”
“Since when do you complain about overkill?”
“Who’s complaining?”
“Raikoho!” If Shin was going to take a pot-shot at a hollow, then he was at least going to practice a more difficult spell. The hollow finally looked up just as the yellow lightning bolt descended upon its head. It was the last thing it ever saw. The insect turned into a bloody fireworks display as the lightning pierced its body before exploding. Shin tilted his head to the side to dodge a piece of bloody pulp as it flew past his head, already disintegrating as the soul was purged of the sins it had committed as a hollow.
His distraction gone, Shin turned to leave and continue his pointless search for souls, but just as he did he felt another reiatsu signature. This one was much stronger than the hollow, stronger than he was even, and it was… mortal?
“Wait, did Kasumi live in Tokyo?”
“I don’t know. But this isn’t her.”
