Every monster has an origin story, a tale of how a person fell from lofty heights into depravity, or when a beast crawls up from the depths of Hell to walk among us, but rarely is the monster of the past more terrifying than the modern monster. The woman who would become Dahlia Gahara was such a creature, a nightmarish Hollow born without fear that tore her kind apart with such little concern that she might have murdered the entire species given enough time and direction.
A step backward in time, brief to the immortal but immense for the living, less than a century ago the deranged nurse of Heuco Mundo was a far more dangerous creature. That creature held no fear of her own kind, her heartless nature so complete that the thought of death was merely another opportunity to feel that she couldn't comprehend. She had no name, any memory of her original life long since lost to the time and decay of Hollow evolution, the collective of souls making up her body long since silenced by her true despair and anguish creating simply the revenant of a woman.
La Mujer, “the woman” was name enough for the Hollow, a ghastly skeletal creature that stalked the sands of Heuco Mundo like a ghost carved from solid bone. Mujer was an advanced class of Hollow, known as an Adjuchas, a powerful creature that possessed more spiritual power than most shinigami or any other sort of Hollow save the Vasto Lorde. Her form was frail and weak looking, as if someone tore the skeletal from a woman's body and stretched it out with a rack, turning the arms and legs into thin worthless looking stalks that should barely support the creature. Her thin legs especially seemed off, making up nearly half of the creature's height and possessing nearly no flesh to speak of.
The first pieces of meat on her body began at her hips, where her skeletal legs attached into boney plates, wrapping around her hips like armor and attached to them were the remnants of a cape or dress, a long flowing piece of torn cloth as crimson as the freshest of blood. The winds of this dead place caught within the tattered remains of her dress, giving the creature the appearance of a monarch as her cloak followed behind her. But even this paled in comparison to her upper body, an unnaturally small chest and waste, slick with raw meat like the flesh had just been pulled from her muscles to leave nothing behind, her only gender defining feature being the bosom covered beneath another plate of bone wrapped around her chest like a brassiere or corset perhaps.
Her slender boney arms swung back and forth slowly as she walked, her porcelain toes digging into the sand and leaving the faintest of trails only to be lost to the wind moments later. Long, unusually so, blade like fingers grew from what the creature might call hands, shining against the endless moonlight with the dull hue of murder as the creature searched out her next meal.
But what was most odd about this woman was not her abhorrent appearance or comfort with violence, it was her utter lack of humanity. La Mujer was cruel and monstrous, even for a soul swallowing monster such as a Hollow. Her heart was entirely gone, taking with it any chance to feel that the creature might have reattained through evolution. The creature brought one of her hands to the hole between her hips, thinking about that emptiness she felt deep in her gut. If her anatomy had been normal, the hole would have consumed the part of a woman that made her most unique, the part of her that could create life.
But La Mujer held no such ability, she was a creature devoid of compassion and made merely to kill. And the trail of bodies and blood that followed her as she walked could prove it. Hollows were violent by nature, but La Mujer was the worst type, most of her killing done not to acquire food or power but merely because...she could. She could feel it on her body when she killed others, the warmth of their blood and the chill of their terror as she watched them die. But how did it feel she wondered?
She had memories, vague notions that she had once felt something. Terror perhaps? When she'd been but one mind amidst a thousand, all clamoring for control of a single body, each soul tearing apart one another as they fought to reach that throne? No, she didn't miss that. It was something deeper, more meaningful, something she'd lost long ago. The blood felt warm, just like that feeling she missed. But it'd felt warm on the inside once, a calm comforting feeling, the joy of watching another life had been hers once.
She'd be furious about it too if she could be...but somehow the lack of knowing that feeling left her calm and empty. Each feeling had been connected to that all important one, and having lost it her entire system fell apart, leaving just a skeleton. However her thoughts were cut short as another creature crossed her path. No, not one, but multiple animal type Hollows. They were like her, powerful and ripe with intellect. Perhaps they knew what she'd lost. Her empty face stared at them, it's ivory surface devoid of any feature, like a human skull sanded into pure glass.
"Finally caught up with you monster. My pack has been watching you for decades now, watching you hunt, learning what you are." The Hollow speaking was some sort of wolf, or dog, a large canine creature with two sets of teeth within his jaws as they spoke at her. Mujer simply stared, her head tilting a bit as she wondered what it'd want. Were they afraid of her? Angry at her? She wanted to know how it felt. "You grew fast...too fast, killing other Hollows and not even eating them! You've wasted your power, all that potential lost with an idiot like you! We're going to use that and truly evolve!" He gloated, his two lackeys barking up in excitement.
One of them was more of a hyena than a dog...how she knew what a hyena was eluded her, driving her thoughts away from the moment before she realized they'd come to fight with her. A wolf, a dog, and a hyena all trying to murder a woman. A curious situation, what drove the other Hollows to fight? Was it just their hunger? She knew that feeling, an empty pain that dwelled in your stomach, contorting and throbbing if you didn't eat often. But La Mujer didn't care about that, because no matter how much she ate, it never helped.
Always empty...forever empty, what filled the other Hollows that they felt like they did? Their expressions confounded her, a whole world of things they could do and show on their faces, and she couldn't. Beyond her mouth, her head shared none of their features. The eyes were especially envy inducing for La Mujer, such pretty little gems so full of fire and life. The way they dulled out when one died was especially beautiful, or at least she thought it would be. Oh, that male wolf had been speaking again, his words fading out as the Hollow Woman ignored him. "Now woman, just stand there and...wha!?!!" His words were cut short, Mujer reaching out within the blink of an eye to grasp his head with her butchering fingers. She gripped down hard, her fingers slicing into his nostrils and muzzle, warm blood flowing out onto her hand.
"Do you feel it?" She asked, pressing down harder as the Wolf Hollow kicked and screamed, his eyes filling with confusion and fear. La Mujer made no expression, her voice as flat as it had been for nearly a century. The other two creatures were lost in the confusion, their Alpha's plight leaving them helpless for a moment. "What does it feel like?" She asked, but gave no time for an answer as her fingers cleaved through the Hollows face, permanently ruining his face as hunks of jawbone and flesh fell to the sand with a plop.
He jumped back in fear, and then roared in anger. Each shift in tone left the woman envious, wondering how she too could feel his emotions, and understand what he was. "Kill her you fools! Don't sit there like two stupid shits!" The Hyena and the Dog looked at one another, the fear of their leader overpowering their fear of her for the moment, a fatal mistake to make. They rushed at her, two hounds ready to tear her body apart, but the lithe Adjuchas side stepped the Hyena, her oddly small frame but tall size making it hard to judge where she'd be, missing her entirely while she spun to catch the other dog with her arms. "Warmth, I want to feel warm." She said staring into the dog's eyes as her thin bony arms began to compress against him. He kicked and snapped, claw and tooth scraping against bone and tearing as what little flesh she had, the pain signals too dull to reach her mind as she pressed harder and harder.
There was a loud crack as the Dog's bones began to give, snapping like twigs against her stronger power and then a pop followed that as his squishier parts came out and slathered over La Mujer's chest and body. "Is that it?" She wondered if the dog had felt her warmth, had felt that thing she wanted to give. The Hyena stared on in horror as his companion was crushed to death by the hug of a skeleton, his abhorrent body dropped to the sand like a sack of garbage. She turned to stare at the Hyena, the expression on his face enough to daze her. So much emotion they could expressed, like reading a good book she couldn't look away. He had terror and anger, confusion and angst, and even a bit of hatred as he stared at her.
"Run Sabueso, RUN! We never should've challenged a frickin monster! She's not even Hollow she's a dem...erph!" La Mujer had bolted forward and jammed her hand straight into the Hyena's throat. She realized now what she wanted, it was inside the Hollow, deep inside. She remembered it was in the chest, locked away behind flesh and sinew, surrounded by bone. Like a jewel within a case, but she could pick the lock. Her claws clenched, and the Hyena's heart burst, coating her fingers in more of that warmth. She pulled her hand out of his body, flicking her arm to fling the corpse away from her.
Dead things felt nothing, and if they couldn't feel then La Mujer didn't need them. She was already dead, learning how that felt offered nothing. Yes...that was why she killed, why she survived, why she evolved. The more she grew, the more she understood. And if she kept growing, she'd eventually remember that feeling. That precious thing she'd lost so long ago. The ring-leader, Sabueso was still sitting there, licking at his ruined snout uselessly. "You bitch! You don't even deserve that power! You don't know anything!" The wolf spat at her, his body shaking as he backed away from her, the fleeting hope of escape still kept within his heart.
She crept towards him, her thin body casting a long shadow over the Hollow as she finished the fight he'd started. "Then do you know? Do you know what love is? Show...it...to...me" She whispered to him as her claws began to tear the Wolf apart, rending flesh from bone, his organs and viscera tossed aside without a care as she found his still beating heart. She lifted the organ to the sky, the soft light of the moon shining on the bloody throbbing organ, a smile finally forming on the creature's face.
