Raph opened his eyes, and looked up at a tiled ceiling; sterile white, it looked as inviting as a psychotic doctor’s office. He was conscious now. He tested his limbs, only to find that he was bound to some kind of enormous table by his wrists and ankles. He struggled, albeit weakly, for a few seconds as he regained his consciousness and strength. After probably about ten minutes his strength returned to him and he started to struggle in earnest, and yet for once he couldn’t feel his telekinesis…or even just normal spiritual power. His struggles obviously attracted the attention of…her.
“Guten Morgen, Raphael,” his mother said as she walked into the room and picked up a clipboard. He kept glaring at her as she walked around to a console. When she looked up and saw him glaring at her she sighed, shook her head and straightened her glasses. “Listen, Raphael, I know that you don’t agree with my methods, nor do you probably like what I’ve done all too well…”
“Or at all,” he was quick to counter. She pulled a switch and a small, but swift bolt of electricity went quickly through his body, immediately eliciting a shout of pain from him.
“Are you going to let me finish?” she asked, pulling the lever back down again. Raph nodded a few times, slowly, face twisting with pain. “Thank you. Now, as you’ve more than likely realized, I am the one who is responsible for the people that have been disappearing recently. I will tell you my reasons, now.” Suddenly she seemed get a crazed look in her eyes. “You…you… You are my greatest failure.”
“Come again?” Raph asked and suddenly he was hit by another blast of electricity, a more powerful one this time, he had missed her brief second of turning the dial.
“You were my greatest failure!” he was able to discern as the electricity ran a course through his body before she shut the machine off again. Already he could tell. She was planning on a slow torture. One in which she could greatly injure him. But for what purpose?! She was his mother! The electricity subsided and she gave him a shot, numbing the pain. “You, Raphael, are my greatest failure. Unlike Brian, whose power was easy to unlock, you and your entire body seemed to reject it. I had the two of you on constant monitor. I noticed that Brian was exceptionally receptive, but you seemed to reject it and your body created blocks, plugs that segregated your powers away from each other. I didn’t see how in the world it could be possible…at first.”
Raph shook his head, trying to keep awake. Whatever the hell she’d shot him with… His head started getting blurry when suddenly he received a slap that woke him up.
“Come on now, Raphael. Stay with me here. I can’t have you falling asleep so soon.” His eyes were open the moment she slapped him. “Amazing serum isn’t it?” she asked walking back around to the control panel. “Shuts down epidermal nerve endings, so that the body believes it’s getting nigh instantaneous relief. But while the epidermal layer is not made aware of any pain, the rest of the body experiences a heightened awareness of pain. A number of people have told me that they can practically hear their heart beating with their chest. I’ve tried it on a number of people, of course, but I do like hearing how everyone has a different experience with it.” He heard what sounded like the clicking of a dial. “I’ve found that one of the quickest ways to more power, or even simply to power in general, is essentially torture until the mind is broken.”
“So that’s what you plan on doing to me?!” Raph shouted at her. “You’re my damn mother! You shouldn’t do this to anyone, let alone you own children!” The final outburst summoned sent another jolt of electricity circulating through his body. It couldn’t have lasted more than ten seconds but it felt like hours. He couldn’t feel a thing on the outside. It was an entirely new realm of pain, only from the inside. His skin couldn’t feel a damn thing. Finally he started to truly pass out and he heard his mother shout at someone to give him morphine and within minutes Raph started to feel better.
He was still conscious somehow. “L-Lighter dose?”
His mother nodded, watching a few monitors. “This is visually impressive. Your brainwaves aren’t moving any quicker. You aren’t trying to think of a way to escape.”
“How can I? You’ve got me locked down tightly.” She smiled and almost started to laugh.
“No, I mean you’re not even thinking about it. You’ve resigned yourself to this. Or is it that you want the power of a quincy?” She smiled maliciously. “It doesn’t matter. This time I will fix this!!”
Raph glared at her. “Someone will know I’m missing, and they’ll come for me. You know that, right?”
His mother laughed a few times, before adjusting the strap on a glove she wore on her left arm. “I know. In fact I’m counting on it. Who better to see your failure than your friends?”
“You won’t be able to handle them. They’ll kill you and make you pay for what you’ve done.”
There were monitors displaying the destruction being rebuilt and the people being rounded up; Raph’s head drooped in disappointment and sadness. I tried… I’m so very sorry… In the end I’m just plain useless…
