With a muffled thud he dropped onto his back into the sand, eyes wandering to the exact spot the moon in the sky always was. Weary blue eyes turned from the ever present sentry hanging luminescent in the starless sky to the daunting stretch of sand that rose high above the foreseeable horizon. Hadn't he been here before? Was it not this very dune of colorless grains he had trudged up just... A few minutes ago? Yesterday? Last week?
With newly founded instinct he extended his presence and reached out like a sneaky child's hand into the cookie jar. Careful not to make a sound, it caressed the bowl of sand while fingering each nook and cranny. On Earth he'd spent virtually no time sensing out the presence of others, but here? The skill to do so was invaluable; a lesson learned the hard way after he'd walked into a small grouping of foes all too ready to add him to the pile of meat they had collected.
An exhausted sigh of relief. For now he was still alive, and could get back home to see his children once more. Though he took in the stale, lifeless air of this realm he could smell his home. Could feel the heavy earth toned aroma of freshly tilled soil, and even the myriad of hearty meals prepared by the wives of the farmers for lunch. The shifting of the sound beneath him sounded like the pattering of his dear Natsuki's feet across hardwood floor, and the finality of it resulting in the image of her leaping in his arms.
His head rocked to the side. Beside him was the woman he'd only just begun to become reacquainted with. Tresses of sakura petal pink with eyes as expansive and blue as the ocean obscured what should have been an endless expanse of sand. Her lips moved without producing a sound yet he still knew what she was saying.
" Yare yare. " He sighed, palm of hand plastering to sweat forehead and fingers slipping beneath a flood of violet. " I guess the Okugata of the house has spoken. " He laughed with one wide eyed stare into the black canvas overhead. " Better get to it, or she'll cuff me to the bed again. " Lips flapped against each other as he heaved a sigh and staggered back to his feet.
Those soundless words drove him to climb that daunting hill of sand, and would drive him further beyond its crest until... Body froze in what was undeniably uncontrollable fear. There had been nothing here just moments ago, and yet.. The Daimyo struggled to form even the most basic of mental commands to his body.
What was he looking at to strike such fear into his soul?

Come back home.
