Ah the sweet, sweet smell of summer.
The bird song filled air, accompanied by the loud foot falls of school children running to the nearest ice-cream van in order to buy a cool treat to remedy the hot sun's head. Couples walked hand in hand down every forest and park lane, chatting pleasantly and simply enjoying the small comforts offered by the hottest part of the year. Despite the rocketing temperatures, people seemed to be fairing well. Parks were packed and the streets were teeming with varying in size groups of girls, each buying the latest bikini and giant hat which seemed to never go out of fashion. It practically looked like something out of a Disney movie! However, where there is happiness and light, darkness paired with despair will always lurk just behind the corner....
Remaining low to the ground, nestled in amongst the lush green of tall bushes and brown of trees, two glowing eyes eagerly watched a cute bunch of souls running about in the playground. Mothers and fathers watched from the sidelines, some even joining their snot-nosed offspring and chasing them around with self contained boredom, electing pity filled looks from the others who seemed content to merely observe, just like the one a mere few feet away from them all. With it's whole body pressed as low down as it would go, all four limbs holding it just an inch above the ground, the creature waiting in the forest stared at the group with hungry eyes, and an even hungrier soul. Gently tapping the multiple mandibles present upon the side of it's head against the face of it's mask, the unseen Hollow watch with calculated silence.
Anastasiya watched, and waited, for the perfect moment.
As far as planning went, this was about as far as she got. Simple stalking of prey, but even that bare knowledge was enough to get her through life. Even if it meant laying face down in the undergrowth like a common house cat... Shifting slightly in place, repositioning her claws and hooves to better serve her 'ready-to-pounce' pose, she watched with keen eyes as a parent went full ham and blasted the yellow and white ball the group were playing with over into the forest, shooting over her head and causing a cry of dismay to ring out across the children. Bleating out a string of apologises and rushing over to the tree line with a happy-go-lucky expression on his chubby face, the Hollow smiled beneath her mask and slunk back into the dark wood.
Bursting through the bushes and carving a path straight through the greenery towards the direction of the ball he so rudely kicked away, the single father felt the humidity of the forest hit him like a truck, reducing his less than athletic form to mere huffs and puffs at the hands of nature. Slowing to a trundle as he waded through thick grass and thigh-high leaves, the ball seemed all but lost, devoured by the forest that seemed so eager to devour him, or was that something else? Stumbling over a hidden root and practically falling through into a clearing, the air around him finally went silent as the birds ceased singing and his bulldozing halted, having run out of things to march through. Picking himself up with a deep sigh, he muttered something not at all PG-13 under his breath and dusted off his white shirt, covered in small fragments of twig and leaf. Quickly snapping his head from left to right as he scanned the area, he let out a loud cry of triumph as he spotted the ball, positioned directly in the centre of the clearing with rays of sun light beaming down from above. It almost seemed too perfect! Striding over and kneeling down to pick it up, he slowly rolled the ball around in his hands and noticed with a happy smile it appeared to be undamaged, that will surely keep the kids happy. But then his expression turned from one of happiness to fear in a flash, as a light, all enveloping cackle filled the clearing around him.
Snapping up to his full height and spinning on the spot, he tried in vain to find the source of the laughter, which was quickly beginning to grow into something much darker. Suddenly a loud crunch rang out, the snapping of branches and panicked squawk of less than smart birds crying out as they took to the wing, followed by a tree crashing through it's fellow wooden friends and impacting against the forest floor, a mere metre away from the man. Scrambling back and falling flat on his ass in response, sweat began to pour out of every pour on his body as fear and worry began to mount within him. The levels of which sky-rocketed once a deep booming rang out, shaking the very ground beneath him as more branches snapped under unseen force and the booming grew louder. With every sensory nerve in his body on overdrive, the thoroughly drenched man, in more ways than one, cried out at the top of his lungs for someone to help him, anyone to save him from the monster causing all of this to happen. The only response was a suddenly cease in the booming, followed by a loud bang and the ground in front of him to dent from the invisible impact, two deep holes forming in the dry dirt and kicking up a small dust cloud.
Shielding his eyes as best he could from the threat apparently looming over him, he simply stared wide eyed at the empty air in front of him. He knew something was there, he could hear it's ragged breathing and felt the strangely cold air washing over him, the stench of death hitting him in the nose like his old school bully after a particularly tough day. But there was nothing, but thin air and the tree line ahead of him. Then the laughter started again, his time the sound vibrated within his very core, booming above him like thunder yet sounding surprisingly sweet to his ears, had he gone insane from the heat? His theory was yet to be tested as two massive gashes appeared in the ground either side of him, the dirt formerly filling those trench-like things being flung into the air and landing in a heap some distance behind him, the laughter growing louder as he began begging and pleading for whatever was doing this to cease, but it did not. Soon the ground around him turned from lush forest floor, covered in grass and flowers, into a bomb site. The dirt was churned, not a shred of green left around him aside from the small patch he sat upon, to afraid to move from it's illusion of safety. The laughter was attacking him in waves at this point, beginning to physically harm him as his ears rang from the constant punishment and his head pounding at the combine forces acting upon it.
Then it all stopped. The laughter, the ground being turned into suitable land for a farm, even the cool air washing over him ceased, only the gentle breaths of something quietly sounding down to him from above.
"I apologise this took so long, but I like to enjoy my food. You've been very good food, I'll give you that, but now it's time to end it all. I had fun, Sir Sweats a Lot!"
That voice was terrifying. A deep, mangled version of a voice who still managed to have something of a womanly undertone to it, and the words it spoke. Was it calling him food? What could both speak English and refer to Humans as food!? Only the being looking down at the quietly weeping Human knew the answer to that particular question.
Slowly crouching down in the mess of mud she'd created while having a little fun with her prey, Anastasiya placed two colossal claws either side of the Human, compressing the loose soil in on itself like a sponge, and slowly leaned down towards him. Cracking open her jaws and spreading her mandibles wide, she slowly brought her dark maw closer and ever closer towards his face, preparing to take his soul with a single bite. His smell was intoxicating, that pungent sink of sweat and fear, it was just flowing up into her nose. She just couldn't get enough, it was like a drug to her, driving her to the point of insanity where she just wanted more! But just as she was about to clamp down, tear the soul from his body and add it to her own collection of tortured souls in place of her own, she noticed something. There was a different smell, a far, far nicer one. Leaning back and sniffing the air, she began to zero in on the scent. It was like flowers, lavender to be exact, but around here? The only flowers she'd smelled up until this point was roses and dandelions, so what was causing that smell? Then it hit her. That wasn't the scent of normal lavender, it was the scent of a reiatsu. Snapping her jaw closed, painfully close to the Human's face, she pulled back and stood up to her full height. Using her in-human senses to attempt to locate the source of the reiatsu, Anastasiya felt a primal urge inside of her, forcing her to go after that person and claim their soul instead. And how could she resist? It'd been soooo long since she'd fought someone with a reiatsu! This was something she needed.
Tuning her self into the spiritual world, it took her all of five seconds to fully locate the direction in which the scent was coming from before she bolted off into the forest at top gear, ramming trees out of the way and caring little for what the group of Humans come to investigate the strange noises and cries of help coming from the forest saw, instead focusing her entire being on finding that reiatsu.
It'd been so long since she got to fought a Hollow, let along a Shinigami or Human, anyway near her level. This was something she was going to draw out, and draw out as long as she could...
