The classroom clock ticked loudly, resonated several times over in her head. She was dizzy. It was like every sensation that she felt was magnified tenfold and she didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t adjust, hadn’t adjusted herself to this stuffy classroom just yet. Luckily for Rania, it was the last class of the day but it couldn’t have been over sooner. Everything around her was a blur. The teacher spoke in a robotic and monotonous voice that only blended with the background and while everyone around her moved at normal pace, Rania herself seemed to be in slow motion.
The first day of school had seemingly gone by without a hitch but that didn’t mean she felt settled on the inside. Her mind jolted when the final bell rang, having been consumed by nervousness and fear. Quietly, Rania filed out behind the other students. She bowed her head and kept her eyes to the floor. She didn’t want to attract unnecessary attention and mostly, just wanted to leave quickly as she could. However, as fate would dictate, Rania’s day was far from over.
She found herself wandered into the middle of the giant courtyard behind the building, looking lost as ever with map in hand. The campus was huge. How did the other students find their way around here? Surrounded by gaudy things and excessive fortune, Rania felt literally nauseated by all the designer watches and expensive cars with chauffeurs come to pick up the students here.
She sighed deeply. Rania didn’t belong here. She stood clearly uncomfortable in the school uniform, which in and of itself cost more than she’d ever possessed. The pleated skirt was stiff with starch with not one wrinkle lived in its flat iron surface. The blazer felt heavy and it constrained her movement right down to the knee high socks and kitten heels designated by the school to wear.
But Rania wasn’t rich, so why was she here?
“No, no, I’m distracting myself.” She shook her head, black hair flying around in a frenzy. “Maybe I’ll just… ask for directions. Yeah, that sounds like a good plan…”
A tall figure walked by her just as she said that. He was carrying what looked like a gym bag. Surely, that meant he was heading toward the place she was trying to find, right?!
“U-um, excuse me. D-do you know which way is the gymnasium?”
