Senses keen, Pan stepped through the portal. The smell, or lack thereof, was overwhelming. The Rukongai was filled with life, and life leaves scents. Skin, bread, fire, wood, and even excrement; they all had their own distinct smells, and they mixed together into something that felt distinctly like home.
Hueco Mundo was composed of sand, sand, and more sand. And the occasional tree which, technically speaking, was also made of sand.
It was quiet too. As she moved away from the portal, the sounds of Rukongai faded, eventually reaching nothingness. With a start, Pan realized that, in spite of the strangeness, she enjoyed the silence. This world, with its stark, simple visuals and almost total lack of other sensory impressions, was a very relaxing place, not to mention fascinatingly alien.
For a time, Pan just walked, delighting in her surroundings. She knew of this place, she'd read about it, and heard stories... before her rebirth. But she had never seen it. Not in person. Part of her worried a little that she found it so beautiful, but she quashed it. This place was rightly beautiful, and there was nothing wrong with appreciating that. After all, this, too, was a part of the afterlife, as natural as the Rukongai, was it not?
Remembering her mission, Pan pulled out a long, thin device of wood and white stone. The Reiatsu sensor was usually a pretty useless tool, with only limited ability to measure Reiatsu intensity beyond very low levels and a range measured in meters; most of her fellow students had long since graduated from its use. For this purpose, though, it was perfect. Pan moved it slowly across the sands, searching for any sign of a spiritual disturbance.
There! She sat down and quickly moved the sand away with her hands until she found it. A tiny white lump with a somber face etched in thin lines across its surface.
There were those who thought of Hueco Mundo as empty and dead, and with it taking the form of a desert, this was an easy conclusion to reach. But even deserts have life, and even Hueco Mundo had its gems.
Grinning broadly, Pan stuffed the truffle in her backpack and went back to searching.
