“I’m awake now since I was able to get a couple hours of sleep,” Rania said in a mocking voice, mocking her own words, to be exact. A sad half-cry, half-laugh followed these words. “Why the fuck did I say that?” Bloodshot eyes stared at the blue gelatin on the table, a slightly psychotic expression hanging on her face. “Oh, that’s right because I did a thing that made Shun sad but I can’t remember that thing I did and now I’m trying to be a good girl and make it up to him in the meantime while I try to remember that thing that I did that I can’t remember that I did…”
Um, you do realize that you’re rambling, aren’t you? Maybe you should take your own advice to Shun and get some sle—
No, I’m not going to sleep until I make some leeway with this stupid project.
“It’s stupid, so stupid,” she muttered, slightly delirious and wholly sleep deprived. “I mean, look at this thing.” Rania picked up the blob and watched it drop back down with a ‘plop,’ gravity squishing the gel into a half circle before buoyancy sprang it into its original form again. “It’s just a blob. How do you expect to do anything with this?” Rania picked up the blue substance again and held it to her eye. She couldn’t even see anything besides the reflection of her own eye. Other than that, it was just an opaque wall of blue. “I mean, no wonder it’s not working. You can’t even see anything—“ An idea suddenly struck her. “Wait, that’s it, isn’t it? You can’t even see anything.”
She knocked over her chair with a dull thud, scrambling up without warning. Rania was looking for something, anything that would help stretch the gel out. “I mean, you’ve used entirely too much gelatin. You only need half—no, maybe even only a quarter…” Throughough the night and most of the early morning, Rania continued muttering to herself feverishly like that. She could only imagine this was how Shun must have felt most nights when he worked on these projects of his. She supposed it was just like a day in the life of someone who was in the Fourth or at least, the closest experience she’d ever have to obsessing over experiments and jigsaw puzzle chemicals.
I mean, that’s what nerds did in the lab, right? I mean, whatever. That’s unimportant at this point. Slightly breathless, Rania held up the newly framed lens, now a transparent blue instead of its former opaque. “Now this is something you can really use!” She exclaimed excitedly, with a proud smile. “Just… how to get it to work though.” A frown quickly followed as Rania tried to infuse some of her own energy into the contraption.
It reacts to Hollow blood and energy, not yours anymore! You’re a Shinigami now! Oh, for fuck’s sake, seriously?
Rania rubbed the back of her neck with a sheepish smile. “Oh, that’s right. Anyway, I think I’m on a streak now. I’m going to take a walk, clear my head, and get some fresh air. Come back and try this again.” She even left Shun a note letting him know her whereabouts should he wake up and decide to venture back down.
But for now, Rania stepped outside into a dewy atmosphere. The leaves and grass were soaked with moist droplets and the sky was still cloudy. It has just rained so the air smelled fresh, crisp. Just the sort of refreshing weather she hoped to find on this early morning stroll. Most people were sleeping as any normal person should have been as this hour so it was still quiet outside, much unlike the usual bustle that was usually contained here. She had to admit it was nice too. Rania hadn’t really had the chance to explore Seireitei unguarded like this. It was almost as if Soul Society felt vulnerable in a stage like this and up ahead, the settled fog had even begun to clear.
What she saw amidst the clearing fog was something she’d never seen before. With a quirk eyebrow, curiosity drew Rania closer to… what appeared to be a garden?
“Was this always here?” She asked, to nobody in particular. “U-um, hello? Is anyone there?” She called out but to no avail. It didn’t seem like anyone was around. Curious really, how Rania had never noticed such an immaculate garden on the outskirts of Rukongai before. It was beautiful and absolutely well kept. It seemed almost like a haven, one that Rania wasn’t worthy of entering. Each flower had been cared for with such precision and tenderness that she felt as if just her mere presence was sullying the sacred atmosphere here.
It was comforting. It was relaxing. It was inspiring even, bringing an involuntary smile to her lips. “Ah, if only I had something to remember this by. Guess I better take a picture with my memory and hope that it remembers for all that it can and can’t remember, huh?” She laughed at her own joke. It was a slight jab at herself, but humourous and harmless all the while. Maybe she was finally starting to take herself less seriously.
