With a squeal like a small animal Cheshire found herself encapsulated by the arms of a grungy unwashed demon-man and Bertolt fought back the desire to squeeze harder in order to show his gratitude. Feeling her limbs return the embrace only served to cement the parallel that he had built about her in his mind, a woman who's indifferent words and almost-cruel acts guarded a soul that only sought love and contentedness. Trying to wrap his mind around Cheshire as a whole, or at least as whole as he knew she was so far, made his brain itch so the thought was once again dismissed as he allowed himself to be pried off of her. Sheepishly he watched as she scraped his filth from her body. What else could he do but stand and look apologetic? Stepping away from her just made it all the more tempting to turn around and explore though. There was a deeply rooted and strongly scorching desire to get into everything, to find things and figure them out. Take them apart. Put them together. It burned so brightly in his soul that the passion ignited his breath and every flare of his nostrils became literal.
When she asked if he was ready he nodded eagerly, excited to see where she would lead him and how different it would be to the place he had known when he was a part of the world. Travel had never been an option for Bertolt, even back then, the business was too demanding and his family to susceptible for him to be anywhere other than Bramberg. But as Cheshire gestured to the open air and opened a gaping black maw in the atmosphere a sense of dread and elation squirreled it's way into the limelight of his emotions. More unexplained magic. Inside of the new intangible doorway was what appeared to be a hall of flesh, the walls, ceiling and floors all pulsating and as Cheshire tugged him inside he couldn't help but feel that they were entering the bowels of some great beast, everything around them growing and shrinking as the rift closed, as if the monster was breathing.
Darkness had enclosed them and Bertolt instinctively tightened his grip on the smaller and more feminine hand that had taken a hold of his own. Being afraid of the dark was irrational, it was silly, especially if you'd spent the last four hundred years in utter pitch, but there was still a subtle unease that bubbled within Bertolts chest nonetheless. Darkness meant entrapment, darkness meant nothing, darkness meant loneliness. Cheshire was his anchor to everything that was not darkness while they traversed the world between worlds and in his desperation to keep her where he could be with her his tail coiled around her wrist, an extra attachment just in case their clasped hands became separated.
As quickly as the darkness had enveloped them though it vanished and the other side of the fleshy, rhythmically pulsing, meat wall opened up to reveal a world entirely empty.
"This is not Germany." Was his first awed reaction to the view of rolling white sands, rising and falling like lumps upon a pale skinned god. When he made noise it was unlike the sounds in germany, his speech was loud here, with nothing to get in it's way. A crescent moon, unlike any he had ever seen, slashed through the solid black sky that held no clouds, not even stars. Unable to hold himself back he stepped out of the portal before Cheshire, his hand slipping from her grasp, but the tip of his tail still slung around her wrist. Cold sand cooled his feet, the grains so fine he felt almost like he were walking on water. Finding the sensation palatable he kicked it around with every step he took. Dotting the landscape were several bare dead trees. No wind. No light. No sound. Just white and black. It was a bleak and desolate place and in spite of the fear that seized his heart the devil felt awed by it's appearance. This place, wherever they were in the world, was the whole country like this?
Only one thing clued Bertolt in to the presence of other living beings and that was the oddly shaped castle sitting over a mound in the distance.
"What kind of castle has a domed roof?" He pondered incredulously, as if the notion were sillier than even his own antics. Towers pierced the sky from all corners of the main box that was the base of the castle.
"Is that where we're going, Special Lady?" He asked, turning back to Cheshire, unable to keep the wonder from bleeding into his voice like a child who had just witnessed the sight of Disneyland for the first time. As terrifying as the existence of a world of nothing was Bertolt smiled whimsically, it was new and it was so vast, it felt good to be in such a wide open space, at least for the time being. "Do we have to go there right away? Is there anything else for Bertolt to see? Where is the food?"
"Will there be mammaries?" His final question came with a coy smile and a cheeky rise of his brow.
