“Fuck me.”
Walkren let out a long exasperated sigh as he studied the problem in front of him.
Everything else had been so easy.
It had taken almost no effort to slip away from the fighting after engaging with the mortal, Jian. If there were more humans like him coming through the portals, then Walkren would have plenty of time to do what he had set out to do. The Seireitei would be completely distracted scrambling to contain the portals and what was coming through them. The situation was perfect. Even the security at the library was reduced to a pittance of what it normally was. Walkren just had to weave an intricate enough Kyakko that the poor Shinigami left to guard wouldn’t see him enter or exit.
The world had shimmered as he walked, the brilliant dazzling light dancing around all the sources of spiritual energy. It wasn’t hard to find the room he was looking for. Anyone else would have to spend hours searching and searching for the telltale signs that hinted at a secret passage or hidden doorway, but Walkren had spent many, many nights in the library. He knew the intricate mazes of shelves better than many people knew their own home. The location of the hidden entrance to the forbidden library wasn’t hard to find after spending that long exploring the stacks.
He had only found it a couple of years ago, but he had never tantalized the idea of breaking into it at the time. It had been an interesting find. A nice little fact that he could keep in the back of his head if he ever needed it. It seems like it was paying off. He had kept his Kyakko up as he traveled through the library not wanting to attract any unwanted attention. His own reiatsu was tight against his skin. It had almost made him feel like he was in a new suit of skin that was grown slightly too small. The room it was in was completely innocent, just another study room. It had a few shelves of books, a nice table with some chairs. Even some lamps to change the lighting if the occupant so desired.
All the lights were off when he entered. The entire library was shut down. Walkren smiled as he felt the seal behind one of the shelves. If he didn’t know what to look for, he would never have found it so quickly. A quick look around for followers or watchers that was more for his own sake and then he stripped the Kyakko off. Without the iridescent flowing colors distracting him, it was far easier to see the seal on the bookshelf. A smile had found its way onto Walkren’s face as he studied the intricacies of the lock. It was almost silly in the way it worked. A series of books were pulled and the seal would temporarily unlock for entry.
Like honey dripping from a spoon, the yellow Bakudo dripped off the books waiting to be pulled. The strips of the binding power hung and flowed into the seal that made it’s home on the back of the innocuous bookshelf. With a crack of his knuckles, Walkren started to tenderly feel out the ribbons and the seal. He moved at the speed of molasses, keeping his reiatsu in check so he wouldn’t set off any secondary alarms that might be in place. Despite him taking his sweet time, it was a relatively simple set up and Walkren had figured out the combination within the hour. Sweat had dripped from his forehead and his eyes were straining from being out of focus for so long. Walkren wiped his brow and pulled the books in their combination. With an almost clique rumbling, the shelves swung aside and the seal melted away for a few moments, allowing Walkren to slip into an unlit tunnel.
After barely a few feet, the tunnel had ended abruptly with a spiral staircase. Using a Hado torch, Walkren spent the next ten minutes walking down them. It was a long, winding way down into the middle of the spiritual realm. There wasn’t much that happened during that time. Walkren’s breath and reiatsu had both been guarded. His thoughts were anxious and he was trying to stay quiet even though he knew no one would be down here. The lack of sound and misconduct tends to do that to people. Eventually, he found himself on solid stone ground again. The tunnel he came into winded into a small empty room with only a banded wooden door inside of it.
And that’s where he was stuck.
He could immediately tell that there was more than just a simple wooden door blocking his way. The slight shimmering of seals and barriers glinted in his eyes. There was more to this one, though. It wasn’t just Bakudo and it definitely wouldn’t be opening with a certain combination. Walkren recognized some of the runes that would normally make up a sort of reactive barrier Bakudo. Some of the other parts seemed almost like Hado. This fascinated Walkren. Almost enough that he was willing to poke and prod to find out more.
He wasn’t that stupid.
Any kind of surgery he would be doing to this barrier would have to be precise and informed. Studying this first and find it’s weak points would have to be his current course of action.
But he had been at this for, at least, two hours.
Another sharp exhale shot out of Walkren’s frustrated lips.
Patience. We will discover the secret with plenty of time to spare.
Walkren absently nodded as he went across a string of runes that he had been over twice before.
I know. I know. It’s just that we don’t have all the time in the world.
You aren’t blind. The battle is still going on in full force.
Yeah...you’re right. Let’s not worry until things start coming down to the wire.
Walkren let out a more relaxed sigh and took a step back from the door.
He would come back to the ancient seal soon.
For now, a break was in order.
