Yamagata in the Gifu Prefecture.
Twice now he had tried, so he’d try again. Each time he went into a city he, just as he expected, ran into a Hollow as powerful as or more powerful than him. Whether through luck or actual proficiency he managed to survive it each time. And each time, with the prodding of Majohime to beckon him onward, he went out in search of a Hollow in yet another area that he wasn’t authorized for.
Hunting them down proved more difficult as well. Without reports from the Soul Society on where a Hollow had been detected he had to find them the old fashioned way—his eyes and his mind. Both times prior it led him straight into trouble, gotten him hurt, but he managed to get through this.
This time, though, the prying tendrils of his mind guided him to the City Hall building of the city. It had no shortage of blue-tinted windows and the roof itself seemed more curved and arched than flat. Yet he could feel the presence, something unique and vaguely unfamiliar, atop the building with another human in tow. From what little he could tell, the human had seen better days.
Just like the rest of them. Another victim of the weak to the strong, for no reason other than their comparative inferiority. Everything else aside, Noboru had his own reasons to hate Hollows.
Noboru, I’m kinda concerned about this one, sounded the rare voice of caution from Majohime.
Hime, sweetie, I think standing at the base of a building that a Hollow is on top of is a really bad time to stop playing my cheerleader, Noboru complained as he froze in place from the uncertainty.
There’s something different about this one, I can put my finger on it! Listen, just, be careful, okay?
Are you still my partner in this, Majohime?
What? Yeah, of course~!
Then I’ll be fine.
Were she a real girl she might have turned a bit pink at the comment.
The short-haired man wasted no time. In a single bound he hurled himself to the top of the building, just barely, and landed hard on the end of the structure with the flat room. His sandals crunched against the pebbles and gravel the covered it and the force of the landing bent him at the knees, weapon drawn and at the ready.
No stance prepared him for what he saw: A stunningly attractive woman with long, shoulder-length dark hair and—noticed in a flash only—bright, aggressive, red eyes. In her hand, half-unconscious, was a human man in a suit who had no doubt come to the roof for a late break from yet another day of exceedingly long hours. As much as Noboru enjoyed certain parts of Japan, the work-yourself-to-death culture did not count among them.
More importantly, he found himself at a complete loss. Both Hollows before her had been monsters. Creatures that he could fight without reservation, could strike with intent to kill because they were animals in a metaphorical and literal sense.
How long had it been since he fought an Arrancar like her?
“Put him down,” Noboru ordered in the most authoritative voice he could muster. Whether she answered or not he didn’t care, “I’m going to give you one chance, just because I don’t feel like wrecking this place, okay? Walk away now, go back to whatever hole you live in, and I won’t split you in two.”
How’s that? he did a mental check-in with his support team.
Ummm…manly! She tried, and failed, to reassure her partner of his powerful, intimidating aura.
You’re no help at all.
“Or will Noboru Takayama have to put you down?!” He shouted more loudly this time, bravely announcing his name with no shortage of bravado as his chest swelled in pride; just enough to make him look a bit bigger than the shorter woman before him.
Now? He asked again.
Keep your day job.
