The words had felt so reasonable at the time.
"I am Robert Muhle, acting Lieutenant of the fourth division of the Seireitei, and I am at your service, my king. How might I serve you?"
Subservience because it was the price for his survival.
"We’ll make it work. I’ll be with you every night I can."
Dedication because Evelynn deserved no less.
"I am the author of my circumstance. I wield myself. Allow me to prove it to you, Tokiyo."
Confidence justly earned through merit.
But every time he tried to reinforce that sentiment, to find some fleeting burst of self confidence, Jikan's soft, discordant humming bled in from the back of his mind once again. It cut through the shadows of his delusion like a radiant light, revealing his confidence for the falsehood it had always been. All the goals he had erected for himself after his 'battle' with the King had been wasted effort in the face of a simple revelation; Robert Mühle died weeks ago. He died in one last defiant stand against the King of Hueco Mundo, and he remained dead. Whatever Robert was now, whatever he believed himself to be, it wasn't that Shinigami. That darkness that stirred in his heart had a name now, and it's name was Vaizard.
If there was to be any hope of salvation, it wouldn't be found in the Seireitei, but in the dunes of Hueco Mundo. He would have to return to them, to his 'king' and to Evelynn, or risk losing everything.
They had him right where they wanted him.

A sparking chain of energy snaked from the gauntlet of blue fire that veiled his hand, chaining the two iron pillars together. It snapped and flickered with a dark excitement as Robert muttered the words of this new spell into the air.
"My right hand is the stone that bridges worlds. My left hand is the blade that binds reality. The black-haired shepherd is hung from a chair. Stratus clouds come, and I strike down the ibis."
A dissonant howling tore through the air of his laboratory as the chain snapped itself apart to reveal an infinite dark void tethered to the pillars. A garganta had been birthed, and although the process had been relatively slow and tedious, he couldn't help but be impressed. It certainly wasn't the Arrancar way of clawing apart reality, but it got the job done.
"Feeling nostalgic, Robert?" The dark hum that had flooded Robert's mind finally snapped together, forming their first coherent words since that fateful night with Tokiyo. "This isn't the first time you've shambled haplessly through a garganta into Hueco Mundo. Think you'll die this time as well?" Robert left silence as his response, his attention remaining firmly locked on the distant horizon.
It didn't take long for his feet to find their way onto the endless sands once more, wooden sandals sinking gently into loose grains of gold and quartz. The air didn't feel quite as oppressive as it once did, but there was something else wron-
A sudden flare of energy swelled from the east, followed by a blinding flash of black light. The sight dragged back fresh memories of his fight with Erasmus, of the golden cero that had obliterated his only hope of resistance. This attack was different, however. It might even be stronger.
With a quick step, Robert launched himself off the sands and into the air, flickering with immense speed as he hurtled towards Las Noches. No matter what was going on in this god forsaken castle, no matter what issues haunted him, one thing remained clear; He had to make sure Evelynn was safe, no matter what.
