Physical Parameters
Height and Weight: 76in/193cm | 190lbs/86kg
Hair: A deluge of thick, wavy hair pours from the crown of Jin's head. Full bodied and shapely these threads of pure ebony fight tooth and nail to remain untamed as their tips tease the nape of his neck in the back, and his cheekbones in the front. Due to his great fortune, this enables him to flaunt a very natural and appealing disheveled visage.
Eyes: Wolfish magenta eyes swallow whole the scenery beyond the thick curtain of violet and reflect the Naval Commanders thirst for power.
General Appearance: When the body of an Olympic swimmer and a cross country runner marry, Jin's body is the result. Lightweight, thin muscle plates decorate the Shinigami's torso while noticeably more toned muscle encompasses his arms and legs. The marriage of muscle to bone is accomplished by tightly wound, almost spring like sinew. This musculature gives Jin the ideal seafaring body; designed to move with a rocking ship even in the roughest waters, while still capable of performing vigorous physical labor over long periods of time. This package is quite neatly wrapped in a light, creamy peach-toned skin.
The general structure of his body aside, Jin inherited the legendary Yellow Emperor's soul and with it many of his key features. The structure of his face is most reminiscent of the Yellow Emperors, bearing a more striking resemblance to a predator rather than prey. His eyes are set slightly deeper in his skull, with heavily curtained lids that linger over and cast a shadow over hawkish eyes. This image of a patient predator stalking its prey is only further foregrounded by the perpetually present toothy grin he wears.
As strictly adherent to the laws of the Gotei as he is, it should come as no surprise that he's equally obedient to its dress code. His shihakushō has remained unmodified for over three centuries and has survived through daily pressings to the point of leaving perfect creases down the arms and legs. This obedience and loyalty can be seen in more than just his clothing. His posture is, perhaps, most reminiscent of this fact. When not in motion he could easily be mistaken as a statue with his high held head, straight lined shoulders and feet that are never more than shoulders width a part. This stance, coupled with his bird of prey like features, gives him a menacing yet supremely confident air that pervades the senses.
When in motion, however, a change of drastic nature surfaces. Above the waist very little changes, his torso maintaining its hard and edgy appearance. Its below the waist where this visage of an immaculate soldier falls a part. With what is perhaps the vast majority of his life spent on the open waters, Jin is quite noticeably out of place when it comes to navigating the static terrain of the ground beneath his feet. He lumbers about in a sort of rolling gait, his legs and hips in discord with an ocean trained brain. This often times gives onlookers the impression that he's quite clumsy and uncoordinated.
Spiritual Description: Aptly named the King of the Golden Sea, Jinhai's reiatsu manifests as a vast crystal blue ocean painted gold beneath the setting sun. His mood is evinced by the state of this ocean, appearing calm and peaceful or torrential and cyclonic. Any time this reiatsu is unleashed an unmistakable ocean mist aroma permeates throughout.
Psychological Parameters
Psychological Overview
On the exterior Jinhai puts off an air of aloofness, seeming utterly disinterested in the world at large. Few things are capable of grasping his attention and even the things that somehow do manage to wrangle him in only do so for all too brief moments. This distant, inattentive, and apathetic exterior even reaches its stale fingers into his social life where he is often found attending to anything other than the subject at hand. This solid boundary built of stone helps to keep the masses at arm's length, nipping any chance of a bond in the bud.
Yet with a single chip, this facade would crumble away.
At the core of all things, Jin is a conservative; believing that the Gotei must return to its roots as a strong military force where politics fall beneath the larger, grander scheme of things. The seed of his animosity, sown when he was just a child, for the Gotei's current state has only rooted deeper into his being and now threatens to sprout into full blown hatred. Politics are the road to ruin, and in his mind the Gotei is on this very road; perhaps even nearing its end.
Knowing this to be the case has served Jin a cold, stark plate of reality. Does he stand by, continuing to reside on Earth, as his homeland descends into almost certain self destruction or does he attempt to subvert this titans suicide? Having been born to soldiers, raised as a soldier, and living as a soldier has prevented any chance of there ever truly being a choice.
Having returned to Soul Society has only breathed fact into Jins predominant worry; his way of thinking is old-fashioned, or quite possibly even radical. This single-minded dedication towards an oft times impossible task has rapidly earned him infamy among many of the more politically powerful Shinigami, crafting for him the appearance of a left-wing extremist needing to be uprooted before his principles and ideals have a chance to take root in the youths. Naturally he's received innumerable threats of imprisonment or death, all of which have served only to deepen Jins conviction, churning its unseen depths into an, even more, turbulent storm yet to surface.
Jinhai's loyalty for the Gotei can swiftly turn volatile at a moment's notice, especially when he witnesses actions that are detrimental to the true Gotei firsthand. Under such circumstances Jin acts righteously, delivering finality to those who would threaten the return of the one true Gotei.
Of all the things that have his attention, there's nothing that haunts his churning mind more than the Gotei itself. It isn't the stones that make up its foundation, however, nor the soldiers marching its streets that leave him lying awake at night. No, it's the idea the incredible militant powerhouse was built upon. He knows, without a shred of doubt, the Gotei in which he's been forced to preside within is but a gaunt skeleton in comparison to the titan it once was.
His might is put fully and selflessly into preserving the forgotten principles of a militant Gotei, exceeding even his own sense of self-preservation. His mind and body are the tools from which the Gotei's bricks will be chiseled. His life the mortar in which the Gotei's stone will be set within, along with the lives of every other Shinigami caught prancing about in the esteemed shihakushō.
This single-minded obsessiveness even bleeds into his hobbies and interest. When not staring down the mountain of problems the Gotei has accrued over the years Jin spends his free time surrounded by heaps of books. Naturally, with the mindset Jin possesses, these just aren't any books. Many are historical, or more precisely militant, in origin. Others depict the internal battle between good and evil, or light versus dark.
Even his idea of fun leads back to his militantly trained mind. Strategy games such as pai sho and chess bring about a competitive streak that is rarely seen otherwise. Debates or even simple discussions about morality draw his attention and holds it in place; occasionally even provoking the elusive smile.
Zanpakutō Data
Zanpakutō Spirit
Meifeng 美风 (Beautiful Wind)
Just as every Captain needs his first mate, every Shinigami needs his Zanpakutō Spirit. Most often found at the helm of the ship, standing proudly as the second in command is the visually seductive Meifeng.
In just appearance alone Meifeng symbolizes all the things her Captain and Vessel does not; untameable spontaneity wrapped beneath a sinfully thin seductive veil. Whereas Jin prefers strictly uniform clothing and a modest appearance--largely due to his desire to conform to military standards--Meifeng takes a turn down the opposite road. Garbed in nothing more than a thin red silk skirt and matching tube top, Meifeng is quite possibly the opposite of anything you'd expect to see on the deck of a ship.
In frame Meifeng is substantially more lithe than her male counterpart, though by no means does she possess a body that could be considered athletic or anything of the like. Rather it'd be more apt to say Meifeng is, perhaps, the very idea of femininity. A pale, nigh flawless skin of unforetold gentleness wraps an all too supple body. Eyes of blue, purer than the most unadulterated ocean waters, both contrast heavily against this nearing snow white skin and compliment perfectly with the thick black mane of hair that frames them.
Meifeng seems to embody reaching beyond ones comfort zone and taking risks; something Jin's wholeheartedly uncomfortable doing. It is when this discomfort, and sometimes outright refusal, presents itself that Meifeng truly shines. Lending to her fabricated belief that she is the bigger sister in their relationship, Meifeng will resort to constant--yet playful--nagging to get him to do what she wants.
Underhanded tactics and annoyances aside, Meifeng truly has a knack for attending to Jin's immediate shortcomings. Whereas he is conservative in his way of thinking, Meifeng brings to the table a myriad of windows for gazing through. She encourages her constantly growing vessel to look beyond just that which he was taught, and instead attempt to view things from a multitude of angles.
By no means should Meifeng be viewed as perfect however, as no such person or spirit could possibly be. At many times during Jin's extended life Meifeng would have steered him down a path of self destruction; literally and metaphorically.
Despite their drastically different approaches to all things, Meifeng and Jin share a constantly growing bond. Their conversations, while frequently heavy of topic, come off as playful and witty banter that few could ever possibly wrap their head around.
Fenghong 疯红 (Crazy Red)
Any combat ready ship worth its weight in gold has an experienced gunnery sergeant at hand. Found beneath the deck of the ship, stationed somewhere between a line of fifty-six cannons and a small shrine dedicated to her Shinigami Vessel is Fenghong.
Fenghong lives up to her namesake as Crazy Red. Mentally the spirit seems off her rocker, muttering incoherent words to a respondent only she can see or gnawing on the rolling lengths of ebony hair spawning from the summit of her head. Eyes of red never seem to stay in the same place for long, instead flicking in every which direction as though anxiously investigating for something.
In comparison to both Jin and Meifeng, Crazy Red doesn't seem to hold any regard for her appearance. Regardless of the outfit she decides to wear Red's clothing always appears tattered, giving her the appearance of a victim only recently assaulted. Of course, this assaulted damsel look melts away almost immediately once the utterly bloodthirsty and crazed look in her eyes shines; the twin pair of katana at the small of her back do little to bolster this image as well.
The true Red is anything but helpless, bolstering a body visibly rife with combat experience. Scars decor much of the visible body and acquiesced muscles define the entirety of her core.
Her appearance has drastically changed over the years, having once appeared as nothing more than a young girl without notable markings or defining features. Yet as Jin progressed in life, wading through the hardships and suffering emotional trauma left and right, she came to appear as she does today. This has led Jin and Meifeng to believe that Red, more than his Inner World, directly reflects the host's life.
More than just her physical appearance has changed throughout the centuries, however. Mentally the girl turned young woman shows signs of instability and codependency, proving to be almost entirely lethargic without Jin's constant attention.
Yet judging a book by its cover has proven fatal more than once throughout the ages, and could quite possibly do so here. This instability and obsession with Jin is entirely fabricated, a ruse to lure the Shinigami vessel into her clutches for no one is better equipped to shield and protect Jin than she is.
Red's approach to problems in life has formed a rift in her relationship with Jin; exactly the opposite of what she wants. Her behavior over the most recent years of his life as even caused Jin to begin ignoring her existence, instead pushing him into the arms of Meifeng.
Inner World
"Until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore, you will not know the terror of being forever lost at sea."
For many Jin's inner world would be an absolute nightmare. An expanse of terrifyingly flat water that ends only where the golden horizon begins. Any sight or sign of land is lost in this world of water while the only signs of life are those found upon the decks of the ships drifting aimlessly in the void.
Three seafaring vessels have been moored together by thick rope, and hardly stable planks are the only means of traversing between the three.
When Jin enters his inner world he often times finds himself onboard the HMS Victory, a 104-gun Man-Of-War. Having served in the Royal Navy, and on the HMS Victory herself, Jin intimately knows each piece of wood and sail that comprise her 3,550-ton self.
Moored just to the right of the HMS Victory is the very first ship Jin ever Captained, the Geobukseon; a Turtle Ship. Though smaller and boasting far fewer guns than the HMS Victory, the Geobukseon flourishes an astoundingly sturdy outer hull with a nigh impenetrable wood and steel "shell" protecting her deck. Hye, as he came to name her, served him well during his time in the Korean Navy.
The last and most out of place of these ships is the Akula; a typhoon-class Submarine. By far the largest seafaring vessel Jin as ever had the pleasure of serving, the Akula was the last ship he's had the privilege of Captaining.
Jin's Inner World is indicative of his state of mind. A peaceful mind is made clear by the gentle lull of the sea, and sudden appearance of all too noisy seagulls circling the masts. Exhaustion or depression is made evident by the low hanging sails and flags, with darkened skies from a quickly setting sun. Uncertainty, or a feeling of loss, brings about the most drastic of changes. All three ships drift apart until none are within sight of one another and the clouds overhead gather in threat of an approaching storm.
Sealed Zanpakutō
If not for the clear presence of two Zanpakutō, there would be little about these modest katana that separates them or Jin from the average. Barely meeting the minimum standard length for a katana at 60cm, these swords show practically no sign of wear and tear from use. Even the oval shaped tsuba, lacking in jewel or decor, seems to have escaped notches or nicks that would come from use, suggesting that the pair of swords are used for nothing more than mere decoration. The silk wrapping around the saya even boasts a collection of snowflakes, further solidifying the decoration motif.
This observation is wholeheartedly correct. In terms of skills, Jin is by no means a swordsman; proving barely capable of wielding just one katana, let alone two. His skill in their use does nothing to dampen his love for the blades, however, and he often will spend several hours a week tending to their care. It's clear he's never viewed them as weapons, but instead as reflections of his Spirits.
Shikai Appearance
Beat to quarters and prepare to fire. Meifeng, Fenghong.
This Zanpakutō's release phrase brings about a transformation of drastic proportions. With the final syllable of release phrase spoken each Zanpakutō is dropped, released from hand to simply vanish beneath an invisible ocean underfoot. Simultaneously, as blade and hilt vanish, separate entities of teeth and steel emerge just over shoulder.
In their released state Meifeng and Fenghong appear radically different than their sealed counterparts. Appearing as a twin set of twelve-pound cannons, lingering weightlessly over either shoulder like silent sentinels. While identical is overall design, each cannon is aesthetically different. Meifeng's cannon has been shaped to represent a red dragon with glistening emeralds embedded in the crimson metal. Golden thread whisks from either side of her gaping mouth like whiskers. Fenghong's cannon too appears in the shape of a dragon, however, her color is that of a navy blue whilst her eyes are pure opals. A silver thread runs across the top of her gaping jaws.
In this new state, these Zanpakutō lose their pristine appearance and in its place they sport a very used, worn condition. The suggestion this implies is proven accurate by how quickly and freely Jin resorts to using his released Zanpakutō.
Shikai Power
Jin's release power, specifically, proves to be as versatile as Kido itself. The simplest way to explain Jin's release is to call it an extension of the Kido he employs. Each ship immortalized within his Inner World embodies one of the three Kido styles, and through them is this Kido augmented.
When deciding to employ the use of this power, Jin designates a form of Kido he wishes the power to personify; Hado, Bakudo, or Kaido. Each designation results in a different manifestation but does not alter the basic fundamentals of his power.
Under the Hado designation, Jin's power is represented by a phantasmal version of the HMS Victory. This Man-Of-War symbolizes pure dominance through destruction, just as Hado itself. It's cannons mimic any Hado Jin incants, replicating it over a dozen times across its many gundecks before unleashing them upon a greater area with devastating effect.
When designated for use under Bakudou, Jin's power is represented by a phantasmal Geobukseon. This Turtle Ship symbolizes an impregnable defense, just as the barriers of Bakudou do. It's hull and shell armor linger over Jin, acting as a natural barrier that can be further fortified by the myriad of barrier spells Bakudo possesses.
Lastly, when designated for use under Kaido, Jin's power is represented by a ghostly version of the Akula. This submersible proved critical in the aid and rescue of countless ships lost or damaged at sea, just as the healing spells of Kaido. It lurks just beneath the ground, patiently awaiting Jins command to attend to his allies. Through it Kaido, at an increased exhaustion cost, is used at far greater distances.
This power has clearly defined limitations and drawbacks, however. Jin can proclaim no more than a single designation per release, preventing him from using more than just one of his vessels at a time. Furthermore, should he deem it necessary to change his designation, he would need to reseal his Zanpakutō and release it under a new designation. This, of course, requires substantial amounts of time to perform.
Beyond these limitations are those imposed by the bond between Shinigami and Spirit. The Kido used through these ships can never exceed the Resonance ranking. For instance, Master Level Hado could never be used through the HMS Victory without Master or better Zanpakutō Resonance.
History
Jinhai was born in the late evening on February 18th, just some few hours before his fathers scheduled return trip from the World of the Living. Though she tried to hold out until his arrival her son-to-be had other plans, and on that rainy evening he came into the world.
The love and deep respect for the Gotei had been present in his life since conception. Whilst in the womb his mother and father spoke to him. Spoke about it's glory, it's righteousness and it's unfathomable might . His father, an unseated officer of the Fifth, lived and breathed for the Gotei. Bled for its survival. His mother, a member of the Kido Corp, poured unsurmountable effort into its growth.
This love and dedication for their home began shaping the young Jinhai almost immediately. Rather than playing and living what few short years he could as a child, he instead spent his time around those souls that would live and die for the Gotei. Ever persistently he asked questions, wanting to know more and more about the place so many adored; though none more than his parents.
His life was a comfortable one. Being neither poor nor rich, his parents' wage afforded them a content way of life. Rarely was he denied something he wanted, he was never declined the things he needed. Attention. Compassion. Wisdom. The immaterial his parents sought to provide above all else, succeeding in a way only few parents have ever done.
By his early teenage years Jinhai had already started down the road of a Gotei Zealot. He scorned those of any position for not loving the Gotei enough, or for not performing in a way their ancestors and forefathers would be proud of. Naturally this sort of behavoir was a dual edged sword, awarding him both friends and foes alike.
Shortly after maturing into a fine young man Jin followed in his parents footsteps, the first of which were through the academy. In purely academic terms Jinhai was no different than your average student; excelling in some fields, and hopelessly failing in others. Kido Theory and its practice was, without a doubt, Jins forte. Much like his mother, the control and manipulation of reishi came fairly naturally. In fact any of the classes requiring more brain than brawn he performed well in.
It was in the year he was to graduate that the news came. His father, while on a mundane and routine trip to the World of the Living, had been fallen during what was supposed to be a trivial matter. The news hit him like nothing else ever had. His father, a man still in his prime and completely capable, had been pivotal in his growth as a man. He'd been the object of Jin's admiration for as long as he could remember, but now there'd only ever be the memory.
For nearly half of his last remaining year in the academy Jin issolated himself from the world, attending classes only in the physical sense. Mentally he'd retreated to some far off world where he had once gone with his father. A world where only the sky and sea swallowed everything in-between. It was during this period in his life that Jin's Zanpakutou fully imprinted upon this asuachi he'd been given on admittance to Shino Academy.
After graduation Jin begins touring the divisions in hopes of taking a little something away from each until settling into the Fifth. For fifty years he remained unseated, taking on jobs that strictly involved patrolling the World of the Living until deciding to reapply to the Third Division.
